1 Overview The division of Information Systems in the School of Economic and Business Sciences carries out research into the use, development, management and impacts of information systems on individuals, organisations and society. Our research reflects methodological pluralism with both quantitative and qualitative research projects underway. This document introduces applicants for higher degree study (MCom by Research and PhD) to examples of the current research work of the division and provides insight into the opportunities available. Postgraduate students are selected to carry out supervised research projects within a specific research area. Students are seldom admitted to engage in research that falls outside of these defined areas. It is advisable to read some of the publications listed in preparing your proposal. Supervisors Learn more about potential supervisors and identify your preferred supervisor by viewing their research profiles and reading their publications. Find information about supervisors on the School website ( or by searching for them on Google Scholar, Academia.edu or ResearchGate. Supervisors are allocated based on a fit between research interests and methodological preferences, as well as workloads. Your preference of supervisor cannot be guaranteed. For PhDs and Masters Dr Emma Coleman Dr Mompoloki Kekwaletswe For Masters Mr Jean-Marie Bancilhon (on sabbatical 2019) Mrs Lyrice Cohen Mr Mitchell Hughes Ms Nalukui Malambo Mr Nugi Nkwe Mrs Suzanne Sackstein Mr Thomas Grace

2 Management of Information Systems This research cluster focuses on the strategic management of Information Systems and Information Technology and their contribution to organisational performance outcomes. There is a strong focus within this cluster on the use, management and impacts of Information Systems and Information Technology on organisations operating in the service sectors. We have a specific interest in the education, public sector, health care and hospitality sectors, although studies in other sectors, as well as cross-sectoral studies are undertaken from time-to-time. 3 IS Adoption and Impacts This research cluster focuses on the adoption of information technologies at the individual user level, as well as the impacts of information technology use on individuals. The programme has developed a particular interest in the adoption of technologies by consumers, but also explores adoption and impacts of IT on users within organisational and broader societal contexts. There is a strong interest in examining IT users within service sector contexts, including policing, education, health care, and financial services. Mou J, Shin DH, Cohen JF (2017). Research that applies social psychology to information systems adoption in consumer contexts is supervised by Mr. Jean-Marie Bancilhon. Research into emergency response or mobile technology adoption as well as resistance to use in mandatory contexts is supervised by Dr Emma Coleman. Research into the adoption and use of mobile devices at South African schools, examining the experiences of teachers, learners and parents, is supervised by Mrs Suzanne Sackstein.

4 Information Systems for Government and Society We are interested in how information systems are or can be used to improve government service delivery for health, education, safety, transportation and utilities among others; and ultimately to improve the quality of life and social inclusion of residents. This research stream includes research into information systems for Smart Cities. We have examined the demand for and supply of information services in a Smart City context. Our goal is to understand the needs and preferences of individuals and organisations in the city as well as the types of information, potential sources, and the ways in which information might be packaged into services. Dr Mompoloki Kekwaletswe has an interest in the use of IS in government and e- governance. Ms Nalukui Malambo supervises research into ICT for development. Mrs Lyrice Cohen is interested in applying the Activity Theory framework to explore the application by government, of Business Intelligence, Big Data and Data Science for the betterment of society.

5 Health Informatics Improving the architecture of the healthcare system is a high priority for developing countries. Information and communication technologies have been advocated as important interventions capable of addressing problems and bringing much needed benefits in health service delivery. This research cluster studies the application of information technologies in tertiary hospitals and community health centres (CHCs), and the impacts on community health workers and health care consumers. Research into the implementation and use of information systems for health services and evidence of their impacts on health service delivery outcomes is lacking. This research cluster aims to address some of these gaps. Adenuga Olugbenga, Kekwaletswe Mompoloki (2017). Conceptual model and instrument reliability of health information systems effective use by health practitioners. Proceedings of the 21st World Multi-Conference on Systemics, Cybernetics and Informatics (WMSCI 2017), Orlando Florida, USA, 8-11 July 2017, Cohen Lyrice (2017). Impacts of business intelligence on population health: a systematic literature review. Dr Mompoloki Kekwaletswe is interested in health information systems and the application of health informatics in developing countries. Mrs Lyrice Cohen is interested in applying the Activity Theory framework to explore the application and impact of Business Intelligence, Big Data and Data Science on the improvement of population health.
