4 Corporate landscape A BCG study (2017) concludes that digitization is creating a deep divide in the corporate landscape worldwide. This disparity will become more pronounced between now and 2020: top performers focus on revenue-generating activities such as customer experience reinvention and next- generation sales, while laggards play catch-up. Champions are: Telco, Technologies, followed by Banking and Mechanical and Electrical Equipment 4

10 Blockchainability: the way forward (I) Ø Toyota Research Institute has teamed up with MIT Media Lab and partners BigChainDB, Oaken Innovations and Commuterz to build a blockchainpowered car-based mobility ecosystem (MIT, 2017) Ø Ernst & Young, which launched their Tesseract platform (EY, 2017). It uses blockchain to manage access to single vehicles, fleets and other transport services on a single platform by digitally logging all the information on the blockchain and automatically settling all transactions between owners, operators and third-party services within its system 10

11 Blockchainability: the way forward (II) ØPorsche is collaborating with the start-up XAIN to trial applications for cars with a focus on blockchain-based use cases that are more convenient, faster or simply not possible with existing technology. (e.g. making it possible for an authorised person to unlock, but not start, the vehicle to deliver a parcel), remote locking or unlocking and secure and user-controlled data logging (Porsche, 2018). ØThe governments of the Netherlands, the UK, Dubai and Taipei have announced that they will explore, introduce and support blockchain or DLT initiatives in a number of areas, including in support of transport and smart city initiatives. (ITF, 2017) 11

13 What do we need for a system of innovation to succeed in transport and logistics? Many services and sectors are blockchainable. Ex: MaaS, but we still need: A common language and data syntax. Today doesn t exist. Overcome barriers to innovations, such as: Data incompatibility between operators and service providers; Back office work to guarantee interoperability. Companies must provided harmonized information on travel choices and routing options. This is what enables intermodal solutions to be offered by different platforms; Data syntax for MaaS. Authorities do have a role to play >> work on data policy implementation Good practice; Finnish Transport Code, addresses data availability and usability regarding a common set of data items any operator must provide. 21 st Century Open Access Education: academic; life-long learning; popular 13
