2 The future isn t what it used to be. Many younger co-workers are just as happy working from home or at a café as at the office. For them, nine-to-five is just like any other time of the day, not necessarily office hours. Offices are changing. You ve heard it before and, with hindsight, you know how little difference it s made in reality. So, should you just ignore the trend analysts and carry on working as usual? Seven of ten HR departments view the lack of skilled coworkers as the biggest problem in the future.1 New co-workers, born in the 1980s and 90s, are going to make different demands. It s not just because they are in short supply, it s because that s who they are. They are also the generation who grew up with mobile phones, laptops and the Internet. In addition, more women than men pursue an education.2 What effect will that have? Three ways of living. Baby boomers from the 1940s and 50s: status-seeking, often in managerial positions and with values that govern their decisions. Ironic Generation X, born in the 1960s and 70s. Achieve ment-orientated Generation Y, born in the 1980s and 90s, impatient and more loyal to themselves than their workplace. All three generations may have to work and get along with each other, under the same roof, for 10 to 15 years more. New technology. New conditions. The younger generation s familiarity with modern technology also creates new ways of working. Virtual meetings are presumably the most important change, via Skype or other kinds of video conferencing. It s not just possible, it s necessary for economic and environmental reasons.
