3M Transcript for the following interview: Ep-19-The State of Science Index Study Mark Reggers (R) Jayshree Seth (S) Introduction: The 3M Science of Safety podcast is a free publication. The information presented in this podcast is general only, and you should always seek the advice of a licensed or certified professional in relation to your specific work or task. Welcome to the 3M Science of Safety podcast presented by 3M Australia and New Zealand Personal Safety Division. This is a podcast that is curious about the signs and systems of all things work, health and safety, that keep workers safe and protect their health. I am Mark Reggers, an occupational hygienist, who likes to ask the questions Why, How, and Please Explain. Whether you are a safety professional, occupational hygienist, or someone with any level of WHS responsibility in the workplace, maybe you are a user of safety products o r maybe you are a bit of a safety nerd who finds this stuff really interesting, then this is a podcast for you. (R) Today we are continuing our conversation around STEM and the STEM struggle with Jayshree Seth. Welcome back Jayshree. (S) Hello. Thanks for having me. (R) Fantastic. Well, for those that haven t listened to our previous chat and conversation, can you introduce yourself? Where are you from and what do you do? Episode 19- The State of Science Index 1
(S) Yeah, my name is Jayshree Seth. I am a corporate scientist at 3M and I work on product and technology development for sustainable industrial products, and I am in 3M s Industrial Adhesives and Tapes Division. I am also 3M s Chief Science Advocate, and this was a new role that was recently created, and we advocate for science. (R) And we spoke a fair bit about that, so if you want to find out more, go download that previous episode. Today we are talking about the 3M State of Science Index. I was hoping you could tell us what that was and why did 3M do that? (S) Sure, see, 3M is a science-based company. Science matters to us. Science applied to life, that is our brand promise, and it is science that fuels our vision, so technology improving every company, products enhancing every home, and innovation improving every life. But we wanted to see what people s perception of science was, so what do people think about science? How do they perceive it? And we looked for this kind of data, but we couldn t really find anything that was recent or was global in nature, because we wanted to look at the perception of science around the world. And so that is why we did the study which is called The 3M State of Science Index. (R) Well you probably expect nothing less from a science company, to try to find the results, or what do you go do, let s go conduct a study to find out those results, or what that information is. So how did 3M go about doing that to get that information, to get those answers to those questions you just posed before? (S) Yeah, so we selected 14 countries, and they spanned developed and developing in different regions of the world, and then we had a thousand respondents per country, and we asked them a whole list of questions to assess what they thought about science, present, future, a lot of questions to address what is the perception, Episode 19- The State of Science Index 2
how are they feeling about it, what do they think about it, do they even think about it. And the results have been very interesting. (R) So, what were those results, because I imagine that is a pretty big, broad study across the globe, 14 countries, yeah, what did you discover? (S) Well, it s interesting. So, people around the world are certainly fascinated with science, but people seem to appreciate science from a distance. Like a lot of people said it s good for the society, but they didn t think it impacted their everyday lives that much. In fact, 40 percent of the people surveyed said that if science didn t exist, their lives wouldn t be much different. (R) Well, that s a big number. (S) Yeah, wow, it is, yeah, so it was 4 out of 10, you know, 38 percent. So that tells us very clearly that people are sort of unaware of science in their daily lives. It is so seamlessly integrated that it is invisible, and so it is science s success, basically, that has led to the situation that people don t even appreciate it. You know, twothirds of the world says that they rarely or never stop to consider the impact science has on their lives. So, some very interesting themes emerged from that. We also found there is a powerful contingent of sceptics around science. We also saw that people are very optimistic about what science will bring in the future, you know, it was almost as if science fiction and reality is being blurred, and people have these huge expectations of science. So, what it tells us is that people don t appreciate it in their everyday life, they have huge expectations off it, we must do something to advocate for science, because if you have this apathy for everyday science, how is it possible that we are going to solve the problems of the future. More people need to be appreciative and aware of what is going on as far as science is concerned in their daily lives. And people are so enamoured by technology sometimes they don t understand that it is really good science that has Episode 19- The State of Science Index 3
fuelled this technology, in fact most of the technological marvels that you and I are carrying about in our hands has come from really good science that was done, so I think science is just not out in the forefront as much as it needs to be, and that is what actually led us to believe that we need to advocate for science, because people do expect it to deliver a lot of things in the future, you know, half the world was completely convinced that science would deliver flying cars. Two-thirds think that science will cure cancer. Two out of five thought that undersea living is within reach in our lifetime. I mean, these numbers go up the younger you are, obviously, so there is a lot to be done, and we can t have apathy around science. We can t have people saying, and this is what lots of people said, that science is only for genius, but when you boil it all down, one of the things that I found most intriguing was that despite saying all of that, globally 82 percent of the people said that they would encourage their kids to pursue a career in science, and 92 percent said that they want their kids to know more about science, so certainly at some level people recognise the importance of science. The problem is if you kick the can onto the next generation and you are not excited about science, you are likely to transfer that bias over, so we want to make sure that people are excited about science. (R) I mean just the fact we are talking, I m in Sydney, you re in Minnesota, we re talking over Skype and a lot of those types of platforms, and Facetime, and all that kind of stuff, you just don t think about it, if it works you just don t think about it, but I guess there would have been science and research and application to get it to this point where we don t think about it anymore, it just works. (S) Exactly. (R) I guess it makes me think about what you were just saying, that a lot of stuff we base on movies, and we see these flying cars in movies, so I guess we forward project rather than appreciate what science has brought us to today, so it is very interesting. Was there one specific statistic, I know you mentioned a couple there, Episode 19- The State of Science Index 4
or result from the study that really had your jaw on the ground that was most surprising for you that you may not have mentioned already? (S) Yeah, I would have to say it is the 4 out of 10 people, so 38 percent said if science didn t exist their lives wouldn t be much different. And is shocking to me, because many of them took the survey on their electronic devices, so (R) True, it s like right in front of you, but yeah (S) Yeah, so that just tells us how little we have done to promote the name of science and that 40 percent, almost 40 percent can say if science didn t exist their lives wouldn t be much different. So that was really the big jaw-dropping one for me, but as I said, the most exciting one was that 82 percent said they would encourage their kids to pursue a career in science, and 92 percent said they would love for their kids to know more about science. So, I think we have to look at that and say, okay, we ve got to do things differently, because we want to encourage the awareness and appreciation, so we can communicate the excitement to the next generation also (R) I guess that makes sense, all that effort with STEM in schools, is how do we connect that support from parents to pursue it, to break down these barriers as we spoke about in our previous episode, it is not all people in white lab coats pouring different coloured liquids into different beakers and so forth, so, I mean, that makes perfect sense, how do we connect those dots to encourage that and promote it more. (S) Exactly. (R) So, that is great to have this information, some of the stats, so how do we use this going forward, not just within 3M, but I guess more broadly. I mean, how do Episode 19- The State of Science Index 5
we use this information to change that perception or get that fly wheel moving in a more positive and stronger direction? (S) Yeah, I mean 3M decided to share the results, and you can actually go on the website and look at the State of Science Index and all the stories, it is very interactive, because we really want to provoke a conversation about science. And we are offering this up to the community for people to actually look at the survey and to figure out what it is that they can do personally, what it is that they can influence in their communities, and everybody can look at it to understand the perceptions globally so we can do something to change that, so we are freely sharing this information with the science community, or for that matter with anybody who is interested, and I hope a lot of people are interested in this. I think there are many aspects to figuring out how to sort of solve this problem, and what I mean by that is how do we make people more excited about science. I think we have to bring it out of the shadows. We have to talk more about the science in our everyday lives. It was interesting that people valued science when it was about health care, so science was personal and then it was important. So, we have to figure out how to make that linkage with all the other conveniences that are afforded to us by science and make that link very evident, so people start seeing why they need to be appreciative. Because it is not just convincing the kids to take on STEM careers or it is not just people to be excited about science, science impacts policy, science impacts general sentiment, there are a lot of things that go on that are very connected, so sharing those survey results globally we are hoping can help us provoke some national conversation around this. (R) And we will make that link available on our blog post so people can easily access that information, because it is really quite interesting when you go through, and there are a lot more statistics, and the questions that were asked, and I really do encourage our listeners to go and check that out, and we can make that Episode 19- The State of Science Index 6
available for you. Is there anything else you would like to leave with us, Jayshree, before we finish up today? (S) Yes, science rocks. (R) I second that motion of science rocking, and I hope a lot of our listeners feel the same way and do their part in their little, I guess, area of influence, whether it is at work, or at home with their families, so fantastic. Thanks for spending some time with us again today, Jayshree. (S) Thank you for having me. It was a pleasure. (R) Fantastic. Well thanks for listening, everyone, if you have any questions, comments, suggestions for future topics or guests that you think it would be great to get into the studio for us to cover, you can shoot us an to scienceofsafetyanz@mmm.com.
