1 Pharma PHARMA IMPRESSIONS Packaging Solutions Newsletter 03 / 15 TWO CHALLENGES, TWO INNOVATIVE SOLUTIONS FOR PRACTICAL USE Innovations in the Pharma Division of Constantia Flexibles are answers to very practical challenges. We would like to present two current examples here: CONSTAN- TIA Child Resistant F1 and the new packaging for Bravecto, a chewable tablet for dogs. Children must be protected from the unintended consumption of medications no question. At the same time, however, hard-to-open packages also make it difficult for the elderly to take their medications. The experts in the Pharma Division of Constantia Flexibles have therefore thought up something quite new: the CONSTANTIA Child Resistant F1. This innovation strikes a balance between safety for children and simpler handling for seniors. With a concept based on a watersoluble layer, the CONSTANTIA Child Resistant F1 achieves the highest level of child safety and is even "bite-proof". Nevertheless, it can be opened without great effort: A separated blister cavity is simply placed in water, and after the required time the paper/pet layer can be pulled off and the tablet pressed out through the aluminum a process that is easy to perform, even for seniors. In another project, speed was called for in addition to innovation. The product here was Bravecto from MSD-Intervet, a chewable tablet for dogs that provides twelve weeks of protection against ticks and fleas. The chewable tablet is available in various dosages for dogs of different sizes. At the request of MSD-Intervet, a new lidding foil was to be delivered in just a few months, and cost savings were also required. Admittedly, this was a challenge even for the experienced experts of Constantia Flexibles. Clear specifications were also established regarding the general characteristics: the lidding foil was to be paper-free, completely white, printable inline with the existing Hapa system, while satisfying the required peeling properties when sealed to the coldform foil. This CFF laminate - which came in addition to the lidding foil - also had to meet precisely defined sealing and density values. It was additionally important for the coldform foil to have the same deep-drawing properties as the previously used laminate since MSD-Intervet wanted to continue using the existing blister machine without modifications. The first trials with lidding and coldform foil were carried out in the fall of However: the printing result did not meet the high standards of the team of employees from MSD-Intervet and Constantia Flexibles. This was due to a compatibility issue between the printed ink and the lidding foil. Working closely with Hapa, we adapted the lacquer and achieved the desired result for MSD-Intervet. Finally the official order came. Since August of this year, the chewable tablets of the brand Bravecto from MSD- Intervet have been delivered in custommade films from Constantia Flexibles and ideas are already being explored for additional forms of this successful cooperation. 2 EXCELLENT THROUGHPUT, FAST RESPONSE OPERATIONAL EXCELLENCE IN THE SATELLITE PLANTS EDITORIAL The Pharma Division of Constantia Flexibles relies on close contact with customers both in terms of communication and geographical proximity. In Europe, close connections are ensured primarily by means of the Pharma satellite plants. Foils and laminates are printed and slit at the three Pharma satellite plants set up so far. The base materials come from the well-known Constantia Flexibles locations of Patz, Hueck and Tobepal. The close geographic proximity of the satellite plants creates important advantages by allowing significantly better and more precise fulfillment of the expectations and wishes of pharmaceutical customers in terms of fast response times and delivery at short notice even of small volumes. While these field sites were initially conceived for the short-notice quick turnaround of blister foil, the product diversity is now significantly broader and ranges from various aluminum blister foils and child resistant blister laminates to multi-layered laminates. This close customer proximity also has the advantage that the technicians of Constantia Flexibles can quickly arrive on site to provide technical support. To consistently improve the quality of the products and services at the three satellite plants, they are centrally managed by Head of Operations Satellite Plants James Brown and Head of Administration Satellite Plants John Crompton. The Operational Excellence program is currently being introduced at the Sittingbourne, UK, plant, which will be continued on an ongoing basis with the participation of all employees. The focus lies on the standardization of processes and systems in the plants in order to capitalize on synergies among employees and know-how. The plan is for every employee in the plant to be trained to at least yellow belt level; some will be trained as green and black belts. The Operational Excellence program will next be rolled out at the two other satellite plants supported by the Sittingbourne black belts. Various projects have already been started in this context, and some have already achieved success after just a very short time. Other projects, such as the optimization of the material flow and modification of the operating layout, will take a little more time. The goal is to have focused and streamlined organizations that make it possible to serve the various regions cost-effectively. Naturally, we strive to live up to the motto: Constant improvement for the sake of our customers! Innovations arise from visions. This is particularly true in the global pharmaceutical industry, which is on the search for new methods and means for protecting health and curing illnesses. The innovations arising from associated research challenge us to develop new types and forms of packaging. One very good example of this is our title story, which shows that it is currently possible to produce high quality and regulatory compliant packaging which combines the key requirements of child resistant F1 packs while also being senior friendly. Innovations that follow on from other new developments have a number of prerequisites: the intensive exchange of ideas, the ability to work as a team as well as state-of-the-art expertise and knowhow. Intensive, personal interactions often become the engine that drives success. This can be seen in the second part of our title story, which involves new packaging for a chewable dog tablet to prevent fleas and ticks. It was produced in record time while meeting the specified requirements: close interaction and close cooperation between our customer and our experts. This is precisely the reason why we now rely on the principle of Pharma satellite plants, i.e. production on site at our customers, which you can read about on page two. Of course, internal updates were also discussed. The change in the owners of Constantia Flexibles was one of these topics, as were new tools and marketing activities.

This year was that time again, and Constantia Patz in Natschbach-Loipersbach, Austria, was selected as the venue. Representatives from 28 individual companies from around the world attended. One of the hallmarks of the International Sales Agents Conference is the avoidance of navel-gazing. For this reason, trends in the global packaging market were at the top of the agenda. The same was true of new innovations that help satisfy the rising expectations of pharmaceutical companies. Of course, internal updates were also discussed. The change in the owners of Constantia Flexibles was one of these topics, as were new tools and marketing activities. One highlight was the presentation of certificates to sales agents who have worked at Constantia for over 17 years. Two of them already had over 33 years with the company. The DPI Technology Symposium The Constantia Flexibles Pharma Division seeks to exchange ideas with industry experts as can be quickly seen with a look at the exhibitor lists of important trade fairs around the world. Nevertheless, it still happens regularly that we attend a trade fair for the first time. For example last July in Sao Paulo at the DPI (Dry Powder Inhalation) Technology Symposium, where we had our debut as event co-host. Thomas Schwarz, development engineer in the Constantia Flexibles Pharma Division, was invited to present the portfolio of Constantia Flexibles in the area of coldform blisters and in particular the CONSTANTIA DryFoil especially with regard to the technical advantages. The 65 guests represented both local and global companies. In his talk, Thomas put particular emphasis on the close connection between the customers and Constantia Flexibles in research and development and the broad range of products offered by the company in this area. At the end of the event, Thomas had the following to say: Participating in symposiums like this one ensures that we can hold valuable discussions on the newest market trends. This includes important insights with regard to quality control, additives and regulatory guidelines as well as manufacturing techniques. We would like to present a few of them here today: Thomas Beer is Key Account Manager for Alcon and MSD and Regional Sales Manager for the area of Asia/Pacific at Constantia Hueck in Weiden in der Oberpfalz. He has worked at Constantia since What he particularly likes about his work is interacting with people from various cultures and with different ways of working. He enjoys building and maintaining long-term business relationships based on trust and mutual respect. Christophe Frileux is Key Account Manager for Mylan and also responsible for customers in France, the Netherlands and Monaco. He works at Constantia Emballage in Versailles and has been with the company since As a Key Account Manager, he focuses on building long-term and sustainable partnerships. The variety and the contact with diverse cultures make the work especially interesting for him. Arndt Söllner is Key Account Manager for Beiersdorf and the contact for customers in Germany and Switzerland. He has worked at Constantia Verpackungen Deutschland since Building networks and intensive personal contact are important drivers of his daily work. He knows why it is important for pharmaceutical packaging to be more individually designed in the future. Mr. Schuller, tablet packs and many other medicinal products almost all look the same. Why should this change? It is worthwhile for the pharmaceutical industry to invest in the individualization of its tablet packs or other medical packaging. This is an important unique selling point for differentiating from similar products. On the other side, a special print protects against counterfeits, which have become a big problem for the medicinal product industry in recent years. What options do customers have when designing their medicinal packaging? There are a great many printing solutions for sophisticated designs that also make the packaging safer. For example, one can print a pattern on the outside and the sealing side of a tablet pack, i.e. the shiny or matt side of the aluminum foil. But one could also print a real image or photo on the packaging this allows the target group to be addressed directly while also fostering a positive experience. The illustration also establishes a more direct relationship with the intended purpose and thus increases user-friendliness. This also applies to the individual packaging that is taken out of the box and stored in the bedside table as well as packaging that is taken on holiday. Concerning tubes, for example, we have already grown so accustomed to this convenience that no manufacturer would think of simply randomly printing the product name and dosage. Instead, the entire advertising message of the product is conveyed here as well. We have seen how this can be done successfully in the over-the-counter area for decades. Why don t we also use these options for pharmaceutical primary packaging? This packaging is also subconsciously perceived on an emotional level by the prescribing physician, patients and users. In addition to images or patterns, other printing forms are naturally also possible. One of our high-tech solutions involves converting a particular illustration into variable lines and curved lines using licensed security software. Our security print on aluminum also offers the possibility of integrating a covert feature that is only known by the manufacturer. Do you have other examples of high-tech solutions when it comes to printing? Of course. We can to name another interesting process prepare cylinders for printing using chemical etching. This process comes originally from the printing of bank notes and security papers. The advantage lies in the ability to print very fine details with simultaneously high color saturation. This offers the option of printing smaller text, and therefore more text, on the packaging as well as designs with fine lines. In other words, this etching-based cylinder manufacturing process is another important tool for protecting products from counterfeiting. The Indian site with roughly 500 employees is primarily a supplier to the food, health and personal care and non-food industries. The company is now making a significant investment: in a new separated manufacturing area with a roll slitter. Regional Sales Manager Thomas Beer knows why Mr. Beer, Constantia Flexibles has allocated significant funds for investing in a Pharma service center at Parikh Packaging. Why? This investment is our answer to the demand in the Indian pharmaceutical industry for products such as CONS- TANTIA Coldform, which we will now be better positioned to meet, in particular with a local presence. We are once again following our strategy of being as close as possible to customers and their wishes. What kind of machine is involved? It is a Comexi PROSLIT S2 DT, an ex- ceptionally modern, robust and highquality slitter. With its high output and reliability, this machine perfectly satisfies the requirements placed on slitting coldform foil. But not only the slitter itself is new? That s true, and this also has to do with the wishes of our customers. We have established a special slitting area that is separate from the other production areas to prevent cross contamination of the film. In addition, we have already begun building up a stock of coldform foil. In other words, we are handling the importing and offering the material in the domestic currency. What role does this new service play in the product portfolio of Constantia Flexibles? We want to offer the pharmaceutical industry in India the opportunity to purchase films from Europe that have been produced according to all important regulations, such as those of the FDA, and that are distinguished in particular by high standards of quality and hygiene.
