Preparation Theater Etiquette Please review the following information with your students. Audience members have an important role at a live performance. The students attention helps the performers do their best. Laughter and applause in appropriate places helps and encourages the performers. Here are some tips to make the performance enjoyable for everyone: Students must show respect for others before, during, and after the performance. The sounds and glare of lighted screens of cell phones, pagers, and electronic devices will prevent you and others from fully enjoying the show. Turn them off before the show starts. Students should leave backpacks at school. Do not bring food, gum, soda, or candy into the theater. Cameras, recorders, and laser pointers are not allowed. Keep your feet on the floor and avoid bouncing in your seat. No children under age 5 are permitted to attend. Self Check Are the people around me able to enjoy the show? Is my behavior keeping others from seeing the show? From hearing the performers? Distracting or detracting from the experience? Create a list of when certain behaviors may be appropriate and inappropriate. Remember that some are really energized by lighting effects, sound volume, and crowds while others are more easily overwhelmed. Be patient and understanding of each other s differences whatever they may be. If the lights or noises of the show become overwhelming, ask an usher or the house manager for ear plugs or to watch the show in a slightly more removed setting.

Public Performance January 14 at 7:30 PM $15 Doktor Kaboom! Facebook Link Doktor Kaboom! strives to remind audiences of all ages that the foundations of scientific discovery can be joyful tools for a lifetime. Through highly interactive comic performances we encourage students to express their awe of scientific demonstrations, to creatively explore the world around them, and to realize that science and mathematics are meant for everyone. Doktor Kaboom is the creation of Actor/Comedian David Epley. David has been fortunate enough to discover two passions in his life. Science, his first, took him to studies at the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics. His second, performing, became his career, and for 20 years David has made his living writing, performing, and directing original interactive comedy across the US and Canada. David lives in Seattle, Washington, and is the proud papa of his 7-year-old daughter, Jindalee. He believes strongly in service, is a veteran of the US Army, and for five years volunteered as an EMT and firefighter with his local Fire/Rescue department.

Community Connection Cache Valley Science Events & News Cache Valley Science Kids (Facebook) Educational opportunities in math and science offered for youths in Grades K-12 in Cache Valley through Utah State University and community partners. This is a onestop place, where parents, youth leaders, teens and children can easily find out about local STEM opportunities. WHEN: January 5th & 12th In preparation for Doktor Kaboom Cache Makers will be hosting a rocket build for all to join. Rockets will be displayed for the community to see at the Ellen Eccles Theatre for the big show on January 14th! Join us for this step-by-step, hands-on fun activity on January 5th and 12th. For registration information and to signup for the Cache Makers newsletter go to CacheMakers.org!

1410 North 1000 West, Room 1910 Logan, UT cachemakers.org Cache Makers is a nonprofit that works with youth ages 5-19 who like to make stuff and try new things related to Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math (STEAM). After school groups meet every week for 2 hours. Community Maker Nights are held on the first Wednesday of every month from 7-9pm. In summer, they host STEAM camps. Explore cool technology like computer programming, electronics, soldering, robotics, 3D design and printing. Students can create their own clubs around their interests.

People in Action Youth STEM Education Center & Community Makerspace Afterschool Programs - Summer Camps - Adult Classes cachemakers.org N 1000 W, Logan, UT What is Cache Makers? A Utah State University community workshop in conjunction with Bridgerland Technical College and an incubator for innovation and exploration! We provide a place for kids, teens, adults, and educators to work on projects, take classes, and hold meetings. Let s make the future together! Abby Fluckiger and her mom, Kate, attend the Electronics Club and are working on an electronic mini piano that plays Mary Had a Little Lamb. Abby likes Cache Makers because she thinks it s fun to build things. She likes tinkering and seeing the final product, like when she 3D prints things! Kate thinks its cool to go from simple wires to a piano! Kate likes Cache Makers because she feels that this is where the future is and thinks it s cool because her and Abby get to learn and play at the same time. John Meade is working on two projects at Cache Makers. One is a prototype of plastic molds for a consumer product. The other is an electronic time measuring device. I like seeing the kids and learning about different types of technology. Antony de la Hoz is working on a mini piano, too! He likes Cache Makers because it s fun to learn new things, code, and build with arduino.

Reflection For Group Discussion or Journaling Which of Doktor Kaboom s experiments or concepts did you find the most interesting? Why? Did anything surprise you? Give an example from the Doktor Kaboom show that illustrates one or each of the following words. Apex Chemical Reaction Centripetal Force Centrifugal Force Exothermic Force Gravity Inertia Momentum STEM Speed Trajectory Thrust Velocity From Doktor Kaboom! What benefits are there for mankind in exploring space? Rocket Science is science. Why do we need math to travel in space? We call gravity a scientific fact, when in reality it is no such thing. We assume gravity will work as we expect, simply because it always has. Gravity has worked, so far. There is always the possibility that some time in the future, it will behave differently. We must remember to keep an open mind. Sometimes a scientific fact is falsified by newer and better science. That s how science works. When we have an idea in science, we call it a hypothesis. We test our hypothesis with experiments. Does it matter in science whether we are right or wrong?

Standing Ovation Every dollar counts. Student matinees of national touring performing artists costs CacheArts between $14 and $27 per attending student, so each student s dollar is matched many times over by funds from generous public and private sponsors. There are many opportunities to integrate the $1 per student into class curriculum, from its tie to Utah State History, to counting money, to learning about communities and the different jobs we all do. We would like to encourage parents to have their students earn the money to pay for the show, which can make the experience more meaningful and can also support curricular connections. In the early 1900s, a former Utah legislator named Alice Merrill Horne encouraged communities across the state to start collections of original art. She encouraged school children to bring their lunch money, five to ten cents, and matched those funds with city, county, and state funds to purchase artwork by artists like J.T. Harwood, Minerva Tiechert, and John Henri Moser. Cache County School District still has the art collection she started. Alice Merrill Horne was a legislator 20 years before women in the rest of the United States even had the right to vote. She was Utah s second female legislator and was elected on a platform of supporting the arts. This performance was made possible by the Wasatch Logan Arts Foundation, Utah State Legislature, Cache County RAPZ Tax, George S. and Delores Doré Eccles Foundation, Marie Eccles Caine Foundation, Utah Division of Arts & Museums, Logan City Cultural Arts Grant, Cache Valley Chamber of Commerce, Leland and Linda Foster, Conservice, ThermoFisher Scientific, Cache Valley Media Group, GE Healthcare.
