1 Overview: By 2020 there will be 50B devices connected to the internet which will make things more efficient, solve new business problems and better people s lives. Already, many devices are connecting to the internet at an unprecedented pace. The IoT World Forum Young Women s Innovation Grand Challenge is a global innovation challenge open to young women between the ages of to come up with innovative uses for Internet of Things technologies. Who: If you re a student who likes to take a creative approach to projects this challenge is for you! Maybe you have been fast to understand science and technology concepts. Or you like to visualize new ways that things can be done. Or you have been fascinated with the way things work. Use your skills to help envision new solutions that can be enabled with Internet of Things technologies both now and in the future. What is a problem you see today or expect to emerge in the next 5 years? How can connecting more devices and everyday objects to the internet or other networks help to solve this problem? Challenge: Your goal is to come up with new ideas on how technologies from the Internet of Things can improve education, healthcare, manufacturing, energy, retail, transportation, or smart cities. Or find new solutions that can cut through many industries. The Challenge: This global science & engineering competition aims to recognize, promote and reward young innovators, and entrepreneurs. It is open to young women in the high school age range (between 13 and 18). Please see official rules for eligibility criteria. Participants are asked to come up with new ideas on how technologies from the Internet of Things can improve education, healthcare, manufacturing, energy, retail, transportation, or smart cities. What is a problem you see today or expect to emerge in the next 5 years? How can connecting more devices and everyday objects to the internet or other networks help to solve this problem? How feasible is this problem? Entrants will be judged on originality, creativity, and feasibility of the solution (see FAQ for more specifics). 1

2 What are the steps and key dates? May 18th: The first round of entries are due by May 18th, A panel of judges will review these entries and 20 finalists will be notified and asked to expand upon their ideas. May 18th June 11th: Once all the entries are in, the judges will select 20 finalists. Finalists will be notified on June 11th, July 10th, 2015: Finalists will have until July 10th, 2015 to complete their expanded submission in a slide presentation and a video. July 30th, 2015: Once all the finalists expanded entries are in, the judges will re- convene to determine the winners. Winners will be notified on June 30th, How do participants complete the first round of the challenge? 1) In the first round (due May 18th), think about a challenge of today in one of the following industries: education, energy, healthcare, manufacturing, mining, transportation, government, sports, oil and gas, entertainment. 2) Write up short description of what you see as a problem and what are some of the possible ramifications of this problem. For example, What financial impacts are results of this problem? What are some of the social impacts? What are the environmental impacts? What other impacts affect this problem? Include in your definition anything that you think makes this problem unique unique to the time we live in, unique to our interconnected future, or something else? 3) Once you ve described the problem, you ll need to think of how Internet of Things technologies could solve this problem. Consider what can happen when we connect the unconnected. For this solution you ll want to consider how the problem could be solved technically: What objects will need to be connected? How is the information coming from this connection useful? What actions should be taken by the network or other devices from the information gleaned? What analysis might need to happen to make the collected information actionable? 2

3 For your solution, you will also want to consider how feasible this solution is. Does it make sense when you consider the benefit as compared with the costs to implement it? Is it unique as compared with solutions currently out there? Entries by participants will be judged on originality of the problem to be solved, creativity of the solution, and feasibility. How do participants complete the second round of the challenge? After the judges have looked at all entries, 20 participants or participating teams will be notified on June 11th that their project is a finalist. They will have until July 10th to expand upon their original ideas. To expand on your ideas, you will create a slide presentation (in PowerPoint/equivalent, Word, or PDF) to clarify the problem you re solving, the opportunities you see for your solution, and how the technology could work. You ll then include a description of your solution s long term development and success. Additionally, you will create a short video introducing your problem and solution. 3

4 FAQ: 1. How do I enter the challenge? First, you need to register. Enter key contact details such as name(s), , phone, and team name (so we can reach you to let you know you ve won.). Once you ve registered, you have until May 18th PT to enter your challenge response, including, problem to be solved, your solution and how that solution utilizes Internet of Things technology. Refer to The Challenge for more details. 2. What type of technology should I consider? Think big. What are the problems you see today social, technological, environmental, etc. and focus on one you d like to solve. Describe to yourself what this problem is. What are the underlying issues? However you need to think through (1) What need is there for connecting this thing to the Internet? (2) How financially viable is it to connect that device? (3) How will this device be controlled and managed once connected? 3. What are the prizes? The team or individual with the best entry will win US$20,000 There are 4 second- place prizes for teams or individuals of US$10,000 There are 5 third- place prizes for teams or individuals of US$5, How will my submission(s) be judged? We are looking for creativity find a problem that is unique, under- explored, or potentially new. We are looking for innovation how did you think to connect *this* with *that*? Have you thought of a new way to use devices once they are connected to the network? A new way to make them perform? We are looking for feasibility does your solution make sense in terms of how much it might cost to produce (even at scale)? If your solution involves changing or impacting humans, how likely is it that they will want to interact with this solution? 5. What is the Internet of Things? 5 6. How did you decide on the ages for entrants? We wanted to engage with innovators at a point when they re beginning to think about the problems of the world and when they have some experience thinking through how to solve these challenges. Further, up to 80% of students go into college knowing what they want to study. We wanted to reach and potentially inspire more young women to study a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics) field in college to better arm the workforce as we enter the Internet of Things age. 7. I m a parent or guardian, can I help? We request that students complete this challenge. However, we encourage discussion of science and technology ideas with your kids. 5

6 About IoT: What is the Internet of Things? By 2020 there will be 50B devices connected to the internet which will make life more efficient, solve new business problems and better people s lives. Our lives will be vastly different then. Already, many devices are connecting to the Internet at an unprecedented pace. Internet of Things (IoT) is the trend of taking previously unconnected objects like cars, cranes, and cash registers and connecting them to the Internet in a way that they can send & transmit information that can then be acted on by the network. Just as it has become commonplace to connect computers, phones, and watches to the internet it will soon be commonplace to have parking meters connected so people can more easily find open spots, cranes in a construction zone connected to a network so they can more easily avoid collision, or items in a store, including cash registers, so checkers can more easily keep track of inventory and find items no matter where they may be placed and when they might need to be re- ordered, sooner. In other words, when objects can sense and communicate, it changes how and where decisions are made, and who makes them.
