2 Background Art based on geometric patterns is among the most recognisable Islamic visual art form. From South East Asia to parts of Europe, Islamic craftsmen of the past used geometric principles and simple tools to create great works of art whose aesthetic appeal is unaffected by time, language and culture. Introduction SalamFest endeavours to provide opportunities for communities to engage and connect with everyday Muslims through sharing of stories, values, arts, culture and cuisine. As part of this year s festivities we have partnered with Islamic Council of Victoria (ICV) to design and develop an art installation at the main City Mosque staircase. The art installation is titled Sacred Geometry and will comprise of 99 works of art based on Islamic geometric designs. The art works will be made by primary and secondary school students and will be selected through an art competition open to students of all faiths, denominations and ethnicity. The art installation will be curated by SalamFest. The art installation aspires to engage the student community to explore the historical bases, develop an understanding of the methods and principles used to develop the designs and then use the knowledge to interpret and develop contemporary art works. Children of all religious backgrounds, ethnicity and gender are welcome to participate. Categories Category 1 Students from grade 3 to 6 Category 2 Students from grade 7 to 10 Category 3 VCE Students, recent (2017) VCE-VCAL Graduates To be considered for selection, an entrant must belong to one of the above category and comply with all entry instructions and conditions. 3 Prizes Following prizes are available for each category Category 1 First prize, $250 Gift card First Runner-up, $150 Gift card Second Runner-up, $50 Gift card Category 2 First prize, $300 Gift card First Runner-up, $200 Gift card Second Runner-up, $100 Gift card Category 3 First prize, $1000 Cash First Runner-up, $500 Cash Second Runner-up, $200 Cash All artworks selected for the installation will receive a Certificate of Participation from SalamFest-ICV as acknowledgement of their contribution. Selected images with artist names will be displayed on the SalamFest website. Display of Artworks The artworks form part of the Sacred Geometry art installation and will be on display at Islamic Council of Victoria (ICV), City Mosque. Instruction and Conditions Artwork Dimensions Due to curatorial requirements of the art installation, the completed artworks must comply with any of the following dimensions: 10cm x 15cm 13cm x 18cm 15cm x 15cm 21 cm x 29.7cm 20cm x 20cm 30cm x 30cm Depth of 3 dimensional artworks; the submissions must not exceed 2cm. Weight of sculptural pieces; must not exceed 3 kg. Artworks must be unmounted and unframed. P3 of 9

4 Media Artists are encouraged to explore a variety of media and colours. Some examples are Waterproof markers on paper, metal or stone Acrylics or Water colour or Ink on Paper Pastels or pencil colour on paper Oil paints on canvas or linen Pin and threads on board Collage (colour paper, cloth or news print) Hand embroidery on cloth Paper Mache, clay, ceramics, glass, plastics Wood (carving, inlay work) Stained glass Lego Research & Brief Artists are required to submit a brief about their artwork with their submission. The brief should be in English and can be about: List of websites or books used for research Choice or preference of colour or media Inspiration behind the work The brief can be in writing or be an audio or a video file. Audio or video files should accompany the artwork and can be on a CD or USB. Number of Submissions Each artist can submit a maximum of 3 artworks for inclusion in the competition. Judging Entries to the 2018 competition will be judged by a five member panel nominated by SalamFest and ICV according to the following criteria: Relevance to the theme Creativity - Artistic interpretation of the theme Originality of the submission (Materials, design, composition) Visual Impact Presentation of Brief P4 of 9

Complete the entry form and submit with artwork. Entry form must be signed by a parent or legal guardian and enclosed with the artwork. Label the back of the artwork with name, age, address and contact details. Take a photograph of yourself with your artwork. Do NOT roll or fold the artwork. We suggest placing it between two pieces of cardboard to protect it and keep it flat. The artwork submitted must be the original work of the participant themselves. 2. Photographs of artworks in lieu of original artworks will not be accepted. 3. Selected Artworks from the art competition will form a part of Sacred Geometry art installation at Islamic Council of Victoria (ICV), City Mosque, Jeffcott St, West Melbourne VIC Where more than one submission is made the Organisers reserve the right to include one or all submission in the competition or in the Sacred Geometry installation. 5. Submitted artworks, including those that are not selected and those selected for the installation and winners will not be returned. 6. Participant grants SalamFest and ICV non-exclusive rights to reproduce their artwork in material form, to photograph, publish and/or communicate it to the public for marketing the competition, publicity, educational and publication related purposes and anything incidental to such purposes including but not limited to electronic/digital, broadcasting and print media. Entrants will not be entitled to any fee for such use. 7. The Organisers will exercise all reasonable care in handling of all works, but take no responsibility for any loss or damage to an artwork entry while in its custody or in transit. 8. The judges decision will be final and entrant will not enter into discussions, either verbally or in writing, on any judgement. 9. Prizes cannot be transferred. Gift cards will be given to a parent or guardian, who may be asked to sign the card. Non-cash prizes cannot be redeemed for cash. 10. The Organisers shall publish the list of selected artworks on their website and endeavour to contact the finalists by phone or address provided on the entry form within one week of the prize judging. In the event that a finalist/winner could not be contacted within two weeks of the announcement the prize will be forfeited by that entrant and be given to the next highest scoring entry. 8 Frequently Asked Questions What is SalamFest? SalamFest is a family-friendly annual Muslim arts festival which captures the true message of Islam- Peace, Love and Compassion. The festival aims to encapsulate the spirit of multiculturalism and provide an opportunity for communities to engage and connect with everyday Muslims through the sharing of stories, values, arts, culture and cuisine. We are not Muslim, can my children participate? Yes. The competition is open to all residents of Australia, irrespective of their religious background or ethnicity. Families and children living anywhere in Australia can participate. Why is there restriction on dimensions? The submitted art works will form part of an art installation designed by SalamFest artist and needs to be of certain size. Is there any restriction on colours or types of paint and support? No, artist can use any type of paint (pencil, ink, markers, water, oil, pastels) or support (paper, ink, canvas, wood, plywood, cloth etc). Only restriction is on size and topic. Where can I find more information on Islamic Geometric Patterns? A lot of information on Islamic Geometric Patterns is available on the internet. We have also compiled a list of resources which include books, videos, photos etc. to provide guidance (Refer Page 9 below). Does the competition entry have to be a painting? No, entries can be in any media for example they can be a piece of collage made out of cloth or paper, stained glass painting, a specimen of needlework, cross stitched or embroidery, quilt, Lego, wood carving, papier-mâché etc. How do I submit the artworks for the competition? The art works can be submitted by post, courier or deposited in person at ICV offices or participating schools. Can I submit a photographic image of the artwork? No. Submissions have to be originals, photographic images of the artwork in place of originals will not be accepted. Why do I have to submit a brief about the work? We encourage participants to explore the history and tradition of Islamic art patterns and we would like to know what the inspiration behind your artwork was. The brief can be written, audio or video file. What can be included in the brief? Some of the things you could discuss in the brief are: Where have you seen this design before? What website or books did you research? Why did you use a certain colour? Tools you used for making the artwork, etc. Will my entry be accepted without the submission form? No. All entries must accompany a completed and signed entry form. Why do I have to put a label with my name at the back of my submission? Signing your name at the back facilitates traceability and competition judging procedure. How will I know if I have won, and how will I get my award? After the judging, the artists selected for the art installation will be contacted by or phone. Awards will be given at the award ceremony during the SalamFest program. All participating children and their family and friends will receive a special invite to the festival. Are we able to see the final installation? The installation will be at ICV city mosque once renovation works have been completed. Can I discuss my ideas with SalamFest artist?
