2 A word from Steve Welcome to the latest issue of SEA News, outlining a busy six months of ground-breaking developments for the SEA team. Early 2017 saw the launch of the Krait Defence System, our modular anti-submarine warfare suite and the go-to solution for platforms with restricted deck space. Taking advantage of key benefits delivered by existing SEA technologies, I am delighted to see these developed into an industryleading range of ASW solutions. Solving existing and anticipated problems, our technical and research business continues to support soldier systems, human factors, capability development and maritime acoustic innovation with our prime partners. Our ROADflow traffic enforcement suite of products continues to grow and is an increasingly deployed tool for civil and criminal enforcement, both in the UK and overseas. Reacting to the challenges of the Oil & Gas sector, our Subsea Engineering division is actively leading industry-wide adoption of a circular economy, with the launch of our Legacy Locker refurbishment brokerage. Our capability increasing products and services are being delivered to more countries than ever before, supported by our regular presence at globe-spanning international events. A workforce knowledgeable of the STEM disciplines has long been identified as critical for development and delivery of our leading-edge solutions. We have an enviable depth of knowledge and experience in these disciplines and fully intend to continue this heritage. An attractive apprenticeship scheme is a vital part of our approach. SEA s annual intake of apprentices rotates amongst our engineering facilities, gaining a diverse and adaptable skillset. Responding to the development needs of each apprentice, we invest the time and mentoring required to help them realise their potential, identify their career path and align with SEA s core values. Currently working on the busy factory floor is Lewis Burton, a second-year Electrical Engineering apprentice based at our Barnstaple site. I decided to undertake an apprenticeship at SEA as I have always been more interested in the practical side of engineering. Working here has given me the opportunity to explore various engineering roles, learn invaluable skills and earn whilst I m doing it. Two thirds of engineering apprentices go on to choose a career in Engineering or Technology. The apprenticeship scheme we offer gives aspiring engineers the opportunity to develop their career. The SEA team has ten Ambassadors who regularly attend local schools, colleges and academies, to encourage students to undertake STEM subjects to a higher level and promote our apprenticeship scheme. 3 Krait Defence System ASW solution for smaller vessels LAUNCHER SYSTEMS TECHNOLOGY SEA's Torpedo Launcher System (TLS) and Weapons Handling System (WHS) have achieved factory acceptance for deployment on a new class of Combatant Ships under construction in South East Asia. Under scrutiny of our visiting clients, the TLS passed testing in our production facility in Barnstaple, UK, before a team of engineers and launcher specialists from SEA travelled to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, to support the successful in-country factory acceptance of the first WHS. Anticipation was high for the unveiling of SEA s Krait Defence System at LIMA, Malaysia in March and our new Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) system did not disappoint. Krait Defence System integrates our range of decoy and torpedo launchers with our lightweight, low profile, towed KraitArray, providing a wide and adaptable range of capabilities. It is aimed at smaller platforms such as patrol craft and OPVs that are unable to accommodate a full-sized towed array sonar. Steve Hill, Managing Director clarified: It is often physically and operationally impractical for smaller ships to carry a larger diameter towed line array system. KraitArray s smaller diameter provides effective ASW capability and can be operated from a conventional ship or unmanned assets. By integrating the sonar capability with SEA s decoy and torpedo launchers, using common configurable software, ships can be fitted with a complete ASW solution. There are 4 levels of Krait Defence System, each one providing increased capability: KraitSense utilises our ASW technology as a passive acoustic towed array, employing a deck mounted deployment and recovery system. Lower power consumption, smaller diameter, less weight and drag are some of the key benefits. KraitSearch enables the sonar to engage in an active acoustic search and hunt for targets, employing both active source and active sonar processing software based on proven technology. KraitArray s smaller diameter provides effective ASW capability and can be operated from a conventional ship or unmanned assets. KraitShield provides defensive countermeasures fired from our pneumatic launchers, such as the acoustic Firefly decoy. It delivers rapid deployment of acoustic multi-waveform programmable decoys, without additional energetics. KraitStrike adds our proven Torpedo Launcher System (TLS) that is configurable to launch a wide range of NATO torpedoes. KraitStrike shares the same control electronics as our decoy launcher, reducing training and operator burden. Product Manager Alex Key highlighted: Our Krait Defence System builds upon the proven KraitArray to increase the capability of its passive sensing and augments it with scalable options for active target localisation, acoustic countermeasures and torpedo launching. A total of six WHS sets will be manufactured in Malaysia with joint collaboration between SEA and Budi Axis. Our proven ability to manage the efficient production of our maritime defence solutions in our clients countries, means the control electronics for the remaining six ship sets will be progressively manufactured in Malaysia. Compatible with all lightweight NATO standard-sized torpedoes and fully adaptable to client requirements, this TLS variant comprises a pair of triple configuration, composite tubes with an electronics suite, providing fire control and target position predictions calculated from ship s positioning data. Located in the ship s magazine, our WHS stores lightweight torpedoes, depth charges and air launched missiles in shock mounted racking, delivering them via trolleys to the on-deck launchers or the helicopter hangar. Eric Abretti, SEA Launcher Group's Business Manager added: The modular nature of the system means that by utilising a common tube selection panel, as part of the combat management system, the fire control electronics can fire the ship s decoy launchers as well as the TLS, improving platform effectiveness.

From Sydney to Southampton, our events team covers the four corners of the globe supporting exhibitions on all 4 continents. With a reach of over 1 million delegates and potential customers, our events programme is an integral part of marketing SEA s extensive range of products and capabilities. In the last year, we have exhibited at 15 events on 4 continents and across 12 countries, using a range of shell scheme and bespoke stands. We have also attended 20 industry-leading conferences and have been invited to present technical papers at many of them including; Future Soldier Technology, UDT and the British Psychological Society. SEA's broad range of exhibitions and conferences represents all our divisions and disciplines, from Defence to Energy to Transport.

6 Aircraft Procedural Trainer at the UK Defence Academy As a leading supplier of flight deck simulators, SEA accepted the invitation to install an Aircraft Procedural Trainer with Cranfield University at the UK Defence Academy, Shrivenham. The Aircraft Procedural Trainer (APT) is the latest iteration of our proven DECKsim technology and provides a truly immersive, high fidelity, 3D virtual environment for students to train in flight deck and landbased operations. This demonstration system is based upon SEA s Flight Deck Officer/Flight Deck Controller training simulator, which is employed at RNAS Culdrose. It delivers training to military personnel responsible for marshalling aircraft on UK Royal Navy ships or shore establishments. Shrivenham s new DECKsim system includes emulated control panels for the systems, which students will be required to operate on the flight deck. It provides them with the opportunity to develop essential skills and experience without the expense and risk of training with live aircraft. Visitors to the Defence Academy will spend time directing Merlin and Wildcat helicopters, through standard manoeuvres and emergency drills, on the virtual decks of Type 45 and Queen Elizabeth Class platforms. We envisage that our installed system will be enjoyed at the Defence Academy by their wide spectrum of international visitors. It is further evidence of the core value of our DECKsim technology, which has been an essential tool utilised by the Defence sector for over ten years. We continue to refresh and update DECKsim to incorporate ever-improving hardware and software technologies, as well as new types of platform and aircraft. Andy McGowan, SEA Business Development Executive explained: The DECKsim simulator continues to demonstrate the inherent value of training in an accurate virtual environment. With the introduction of the QE Class carriers in particular, SEA s latest simulators will be a valuable asset in delivering low-cost effective training for key personnel. The Royal Norwegian Navy and Airbus Helicopters are amongst our increasing number of DECKsim partners. OCEANOGRAPHY OVER THE INTERNET SEA s ethos of actively supporting innovation has delivered another first. What started as a brainstorming session within our Research and Technical Support teams has evolved into a software package that uses Big Data and improves understanding of sonar performance in complex ocean environments. The capability and effectiveness of sonar is significantly affected by oceanographic conditions in the water column. Using publicly available environmental data sourced directly from the Internet, SEA s webenabled software calculates and displays sonar performance metrics, with highly interactive visualisation, enabling ocean variabiilty and its effects on sonar to be better understood. SEA is an established provider of a comprehensive range of sonar services to the international Defence market. Combining this experience with a dynamic approach to innovation has led to the development of this innovative software package, which will be of particular benefit to ship and submarine operational planners as well as sonar operators. SEA has used the software for sonar performance variability analysis, as presented at the Institute of Acoustics' Cambridge conference in The first niche analytical software of its kind. December Our expectation is that the opensource nature of the software will lead to its use in the wider oceanographic community as well as for Defence. SEA acoustic expert, Marcus Donnelly, explains: This is the first niche analytical software of its kind and showcases elements of our game-changing capabilities. We anticipate a high-level of practical application by a widespread of oceanographic professionals. A first for the company, SEA has made the software available as opensource. Python 3 users can install the software directly from the Python Package Index (pip install bokodapviewer), and the source code is available from SEA s public repository at

7 Legacy Locker With the release of Legacy Locker in June 2017, our Aberdeen based Subsea Engineering Team is leading the way for our partners in the Oil & Gas industry to optimise the value of existing capital equipment and combat the continued downturn in the offshore market. As the decommissioning of infrastructure on existing fields in the North Sea continues, large quantities of functioning equipment is being scrapped, rather than being refurbished and reused. The Subsea team at SEA prefers to return these assets to full functionality, including complete spares and qualification/ certification packages. They are then sold onwards enabling significant cost savings to be achieved by the new owner, as well as extending the equipment s service life. This approach is known as a circular economy business model and emphasises recycling over disposal. Our long-term commitment to adjust economic, social and environmental behaviours to build a resourceful and sustainable future led SEA to be an early adopter of the circular economy ethos. Now Legacy Locker provides the opportunity for other forward-thinking companies to access the multiple benefits that are available. Integrating refurbished legacy equipment with new systems can present complex challenges. Our established system engineering expertise can deliver additional value when employed to resolve such issues. SEA will continue to help our partners overcome any obstacles presented by legacy interfaces, proprietary protocols or old standards. SEA Subsea Engineering Director, Matt Blair, explained, Creating alternative and innovative solutions, tailored to the challenges that the North Sea Industry is facing, is an integral part of what we do at SEA. The release of Legacy Locker gives a name to a service we have been providing for a number of years and is the portal for our partners to create greater economic growth through reuse, re-manufacturing and recycling of subsea equipment. Access Legacy Locker at ROADFLOW DEMONSTRATES VALUE The London Borough of Enfield reports a staggering 2000% increase in detected bus lane traffic offences since switching to ROADflow, our industry leading 24/7 unattended traffic enforcement system. In an effort to reduce dangerous and congestion-forming behaviours, the London Borough of Enfield has progressively installed eight ROADflow Flexi Bus Lane devices and eleven ROADflow Motion rapidly re-deployable moving traffic enforcement devices. Powered by single mains power and utilising advanced 3D tracking software and a flexible rules engine to overcome low-light or obscuring conditions, ROADflow s Flexi Bus Lane cameras are mounted on lamp posts, buildings and CCTV columns providing 24/7 enforcement. 3G communication is used to send evidence packs to the ROADflow Replay suite for rapid review before enforcement notices are issued. ROADflow s modular technology and plugand-play capability have allowed additional cameras to be integrated as required. Ivor Norman, London Borough of Enfield's CCTV Co-ordinator, explained: The ROADflow system does not require an operator, it is a robust system good at capturing contraventions, probably five times more than an attended CCTV camera operator. It s the best thing we have ever done in terms of altering motorists habits towards road safety and making the roads of Enfield better and safer to drive on.

Justin spent 16 years in The Black Watch and Royal Regiment of Scotland before leaving in Over this period, Justin was deployed on multiple operations including Iraq in 2003 & 2004, supporting the US Marine Corps around Fallujah, and Kosovo in Finally in 2013, Justin spent time in Afghanistan, mentoring the Aghan police on operations. During his army career, Justin also gained experience in technical communications, knowledge management, logistics and procurement (DE&S). LAURENCE BEDFORD Laurence Bedford, our Senior Principal Consultant for Ground Close Combat research, has over 20 years military experience as an Infantry Officer. Laurence s significant operational and training experience was obtained leading Light Infantry Company Groups on operations in Afghanistan, Iraq and Northern Ireland. As a Formation and Unit Training Advisor (FUTA) with the Operational Training Advisory Group (OPTAG) he led the Preparation and Training for 16 Air Assault Brigade's HERRICK 13 Afghanistan Tour. Laurence is an active fundraiser for the charity Combat Stress, the UK s leading veterans mental health charity. Maj L J Bedford OC A Company 2 PWRR in Shin Kaly, Nad-e-Ali, Helmand Province 2009 JONNIE BARNES- YALLOWLEY Jonnie Barnes-Yallowley, from our Maritime Research Team, is responsible for delivering research and technology support in Maritime Missions Systems. Jonnie served for over 25 years in the UK Royal Navy, firstly as a pilot and then as a principal warfare officer serving with a variety of carriers, squadrons and ships. Jonnie continued his naval career at the Permanent Joint Headquarters (Middle East & Sierra Leone operations) followed by time at the Maritime Doctrine Centre. Next, joining the Carrier Strike Capability Integration team with HMS Illustrious, at Navy Command Headquarters, followed by a placement with the US Navy Carrier Command Headquarters and finally with HMS Queen Elizabeth. Jonnie has continued his links to the Navy as a reservist. He is currently supporting the QEC Through Life Capability Management Plan. In his spare time, Jonnie is a dedicated fundraiser for both the British Heart Foundation and the British Stroke Association.
