5 Art History Activity Choose an artwork by Georgia O Keeffe from Google Art Project Georgia O'Keeffe (Be sure to look at all images!) Add a slide to this Google Presentation: Google Presentation Georgia O'Keeffe Type your name and period in the header of your slide. Use the Snipping Tool on your computer to save the image to your DESKTOP. Insert the photo on one side of your slide. Answer the following questions on the other side-be SPECIFIC What do you see? (colors, patterns, textures, lines, shapes, etc.) What do you think the painting is about? (what is the artist trying to say or express?) Why did you choose this artwork?
6 Your Project I will be able to create an artwork inspired by Georgia O Keeffe that uses proper paint techniques, line patterns, and a monochromatic gradation. Choose an object from nature (flower, rock, shell, fossil, bone, etc.) Bring in an object or choose something of mine Look closely at your object to notice the lines, patterns, and textures Choose a zoomed in portion of the object to focus on for your artwork that you find interesting. Create a contour drawing of a portion of the object largely on your paper, leaving about half of the paper as negative space. You will design your own details inside your lines using line patterns that will be painted black You will then create a monochromatic gradation in the background.
7 Step 1 Look closely and sketch various sections of your object to choose the best from. Think about how Georgia O Keeffe would look at your object as if she had a magnifying glass. What areas are most interesting? Maybe there are PATTERNS on your object or TEXTURES you are drawn to. Choose your favorite sketch to use in your final.
8 Step 2 Transfer your sketch as a contour drawing onto your final paper with a composition in mind. Where do you want to place your object? Centered? Off center? On the top/bottom/left/right? BALANCE Symmetry Asymmetry
9 Step 3 Design line/shape patterns or textures within each shape created by your contour drawing. Think about what kind of lines you want to use to make this more personal. How do short, thin, abrupt lines express something different from long, flowing lines? What kind of lines did Georgia O Keeffe use? What do you want to express through your line designs?
10 Step 4 Draw lines around your object that go all the way from the left side to the right. These can be any kind of line you want, but the line should be repeated (it may look odd to have a zig zag line followed by a gradual curved line) You should have at least 5 sections (4 lines)
11 Small Group In Progress Critique LG: I will be able to reflect on and make revisions to my artwork. I will number you off into 9 different groups. Go to the assigned table color. Choose whose artwork will be discussed first using the following questions. Remember, feedback should be SPECIFIC and CONSTRUCTIVE. What do you see in the artwork? What do you find interesting and WHY? What seems confusing/unclear/unfinished? What would make the artwork stronger and WHY? Once finished, that artist should write down one-three things he/she would like to revise to improve the artwork. The group will repeat these steps with the next artwork until everyone has received feedback and written down their plan of action. Go back to your seat when time is up and begin making these revisions. Be ready to begin painting the next class period.
12 Step 5 Paint your line designs with black paint. Use appropriate brushes Size of brush Shape of brush Make your lines smooth Move your hand slowly Make sure you have enough paint on your bristles Turn your paper as needed
13 Step 6 Paint a monochromatic gradation in the background. The middle (or third) section should be a pure HUE. The sections closest to the object should be TINTS. The sections farthest from the object should be SHADES. The sections should be in order from lightest to darkest. EXTENSION: Instead of painting your gradation using hard lines, blend your paint to a true gradation with no line to separate each tint/shade.
14 Step 7 Erase any pencil lines you may see Finish any final touches. Ask 3 people in class for verbal feedback. Make any final revisions.
15 Artist Statement and Evaluation Go to Access Code: ZTDT-TWDH Answer the reflection questions in complete sentences Evaluate your project using the criteria on the rubric provide. Back up your answers with what you learned from this project and what you still need to know more about.
