19 Rationale I chose to design this flat packaged desk to be a comfortable home workspace over multiple hour sessions. Research has proven that sitting or standing in one position for too long is unhealthy mentally and physically. All of my initial concepts included the feature of both a sitting and standing workspace in order to keep the person using it in motion. In my final design, the lower work surface has a structure on top of it that supports a secondary top that is at a standing height. To add versatility the top work surface is spilt so that one third of the top can be left up in order to accommodate for taller objects that may be on the lower surface. The remaining two thirds that folds down is still forty inches across which is still a sufficient workspace. When designing the structure of the desk I wanted to have a simple and weight conscious design as the desk already includes a lot of pieces. The simple offset, interior outline of the pieces adds a light aesthetic as well as a light piece weight wise. The desk would come flat packed in two boxes in order to be manageable by two people. The topes of the desk along with the other two long pieces would make up the big box which would only fit in a pick-up truck box or many a large SUV or minivan. The smaller box would contain the legs and side panels and would fit in virtually any vehicle.
