1 ART CLASSES for Grades 3+up FIRST CALIFORNIANS Native American Clay Pots Students learn the process of working with clay to create their own pinch pot. Students will apply designs and symbols used by the Native Americans of the South West. The Native American pinch pot is created with air dry clay and will be almost dry the next day. It is created in a three step process lead by Kidseum Art Instructors. Teachers can extend the art making fun by painting the pots in their classroom with acrylic or tempera paint. 2 MISSIONS AND RANCHOS California Ranchos Cattle Brands Students learn the history and reasons for the making of elaborated Spanish brand designs, used to identify a rancho s cattle. Students will create a unique cattle brand using their own initials on a paper hide. 1.5,2.0, ,2.0, ,3.0, , , ,2.0, ,2.0,3.0 Cochineal Painted Textile Students will discuss the history of cochineal and the science of making cochineal dye. They will then mix their own shades of cochineal dye using common household items such as lemon juice, to create different shades of red, and paint their textile with a pre-printed flower design inspired by artifacts in the Ranchos exhibition. 3 ANCIENT ARTS OF CHINA: A 5000 YEAR LEGACY Chinese Scrolls Students learn the process, traditions and importance of calligraphy, brush painting, poetry, and signature stamps in Chinese art. Students will create an original work of art applying Chinese Scroll Painting Techniques such as, brush painting, Chinese character drawing and ink printmaking. 1.5,2.0,3.0, ,4.4,2.0, ,2.7,3.4, , ,3.1, ,2.0, , 1.4,1.5, 2.0 Chinese Clay Dragons Students create their very own sculpture of a Chinese Dragon as they learn the significance and importance of the dragon in Chinese art and literature as a symbol of power, strength, and good luck. Teachers can extend the art making fun by painting the masks in their classroom with acrylic or tempera paint. 4 CALIFORNIA BOUNTY: IMAGE AND IDENTITY, Landscape Painting Students will view and discuss the different painting techniques used by California Plein air painters. They will apply these 19 th - 20 th century painting techniques by creating their own landscape painting using watercolors. 1.3,1.2,1.4, ,2.0, ,2.0, ,2.0, ,1.3, ,2.0, ,2.0,5.0 SPIRITS AND HEADHUNTERS Clay Spirit Masks After touring Spirits and Headhunters, students create their own masks inspired by one of the many masks in the exhibit. The Clay Spirit Masks are created with air dry clay and will be almost dry the next day. Teachers can extend the art making fun by painting the masks in their classroom with acrylic or tempera paint. 5 MUMMIES OF THE WORLD: THE EXHIBIT Egyptian Ushabtis Students will create and design their own Egyptian clay Ushabtis, while learning about these small figures and their placement in tombs to act as servants in the afterlife. Students will learn to use slabs, additive and subtractive clay techniques to complete their ushabti. 1.5,2.0, ,2.0,2.3, ,2.0, ,3.0, ,1.4,2.0,3.1, ,2.4,2.6, ,2.0,3.0 Egyptian Papyrus Drawing Students will explore a range of Egyptian mummies and artifacts such as, ankhs, canopic jars, mummy masks, cat mummies, sarcophagus and much more. They will discuss the making of the mummies, decomposition and rituals. 6 VIRGIN OF GUADALUPE: IMAGES IN COLONIAL MEXICO Guadalupe Textile Prints Students will decorate and design their own Guadalupe textile print. This special exhibit will allow students to analyze and discuss a variety of paintings, sculptures, engravings, textiles and silver. Students will experience not only religious but artistic and festive images of Colonial Mexico. 2.0,2.6,3.0, ,2.6,3.2, ,3.0,3.4, ,2.4, ,2.0, ,2.0, ,2.4,4.1,5.2 Guadalupe Foam Printmaking Students will draw and design their own original Guadalupe image on special Styrofoam paper.
