4 Historical Aspects Since 1985, telecommunication and computer industry were concerned with the lack of a standard for building telecommunications cabling system. In July of 1991, the first version of the standard was published as EIA/TIA 568. In August of 1991, TSB-36 was published with specifications of higher grades (Cat4 & Cat5) of UTP. Through several revisions, these were merged and revised to EIA/TIA 568A (October 1995), 568B (May 2001) & latest version for Cat6 ANSI/TIA/EIA-568-B.2-1 (June 2002). ISO has developed a cabling standard on an international basis under the title Generic Cabling for Customer Premises ISO/IEC (referred as class E cabling for Cat6).

6 Recent Tendencies In 1998, TIA s Commercial Building Cabling Systems Committee TR task group worked on improved cabling standard and issued PM3727 for the development of new standards for Enhanced Cat5 & Next Generation Cabling systems. Today, we work on Cat6 of ANSI/TIA/EIA-568-B.2-1 Draft 8 issued in June In September 1997, JTC (Joint Technical Committee of ISO) decided to develop a new standard for Cat6 & 7. IEEE 802.3ab Committee has developed a 1000 Base T Gigabit Ethernet Line Code in 1997 capable of transmit 250 Mbits/sec on each pair of 4 pair cable. Full Duplex for Cat5e. Today, for Cat6 full Duplex the data rate is 1000 Mbits. DIN will form the basis for new high performance cable.

8 System components There can be optical fiber cabling system as well as copper cabling system. Optical Fiber system can be discussed later. There are several copper cabling systems. We will talk on 100 ohms structured cabling system mainly. This system is a structured copper cabling system available in UTP, S- FTP, FTP or SSTP and conform to ISO/IEC-11801

19 Snap-in Jacks (2) The snap-in jacks are designed to snap into floor and wall outlets compatible with the AMP Keystone standard. The UMJ is used mostly for the US market where shuttered outlets are not required.
