1 FLORIDA ATLANTIC UNIVERSITY Course Syllabus I. Course Title: PGY2401C Photography I Prerequisite(s): none II. Class Meetings: Tuesday & Thursday 1-3:50pm Credit Hours: 4 III. Lectures, demonstrations, darkroom instruction and critiques are used to teach the fundamentals of photography with emphasis on the black-and-white photo process V. Text: Black and White Photography A Basic Manual by Henry Horenstein (Third Edition) ISBN: (Recommended NOT REQUIRED) VI. Course Objectives: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be able to: 4.1. Demonstrate an understanding of the basic operation of a manual 35mm camera, including focusing and exposure functions 4.2. Demonstrate a basic understanding of how light affects film and how to assess proper development of exposed film 4.3. Understand the basic process for creating black and white enlargements 4.4. Apply aesthetics and craftsmanship to create black-and-white photographs suitable for inclusion in a serious student portfolio 4.5. Edit a body of images from contact sheets and work prints to produce a coherent body of work 1

Course Method: Methods of instruction include lectures; demonstrations, slide and video presentations; class discussions; photographic assignments outside of class; critiques and instructor supervised lab time. VIII. Method of Student Evaluation: Participation in class discussions and critiques 10% This is refers to ACTIVE PARTICIPATION not simple attendance. Assignments 40% Assignment 1 = Film Processing Assignment 2 = Photograms Assignment 3 = Camera Operation Assignment 4 = Contact Sheets Assignment 5 = Camera Techniques Assignment 6 = Enlargements Assignment 7 = Contrast Printing Filters Final Project 50% 5 Mandatory Labs 4 Mandatory Work In Progress Critiques Final Critique of Prints & Artist Statement IX. Policy for Class Attendance and Grading : Each absence and/or tardy will incrementally reduce the percentage of the portion of your grade in the attendance and participation category. Absences make it difficult to maintain the quality of work expected in this course. Only work that is complete and turned in on time will be eligible for full credit. Grades for late work will be greatly reduced regardless of the reason. All assignments turned in on time and complete will be eligible for a re-grade. 2
3 Expectations: *Students are expected to come to class on time, prepared for lecture and lab work. Turn off all electronic media unless specifically required for class. No cell phone use in class or darkroom. * Respect for all materials and equipment in the lab is expected as well as respect for other students work. *Students will keep a binder/folder for all handouts and course materials. It is expected that before attending class all readings or assignments will be completed. *Students will be expected to refer to syllabus or assignment sheets for due dates on all projects. All students are required to attend scheduled critiques whether they have work to show or not. (although I would encourage you to put up whatever you have at the time it is better than nothing). Keep the course outline and syllabus in the front of your notebook and refer to it often. *Changes to the Syllabus are at the discretion of the instructor and it is the student s responsibility to stay informed of these changes. This is NOT a digital photography course. Look for the Canon EOS series - Elans and Rebels can be had for very reasonable prices with lenses included. 6

Supplies: Supplies: I recommend B&H Photo in New York as the vendor for good prices and fast shipping. I have set up a wish list with items that you will need. Please note the descriptions below. Some items are required while others are recommended. Required: At least 10 rolls of Kodak Tri-X Black-and-White film. Must be which means it s made for 35mm cameras and it contains 36 exposures. Do NOT buy black-and-white film from CVS, Target, Walgreens,etc. You will not be able to process this film in the lab. 1 box of 100 sheets of 8x10 Ilford Multigrade IV Deluxe Photographic Paper RC (Pearl Surface) This is Darkroom Paper DO NOT OPEN THIS BOX IN THE LIGHT! 35mm Archival Negative pages (Vu-all, Clearfile, Printfile) 7 strips of 5 frames.
