I N T R O D U C T I O N THE PURPOSE OF THIS MANUAL The Signage Standards Manual provides guidance to Palm Beach Community College personnel and outside consultants who are involved in specifying, fabricating, or installing signage at Palm Beach Community College campuses. As the college continues to change and expand, the need for more effective directional and information signage for our students, their families, our visitors, teachers and staff becomes more critical. The message and image conveyed by signage often determines the type of impression a first-time visitor has of an institution. Taking a wrong turn while either driving through a campus or walking in a building adds to the stress that students and their families may already be experiencing. Seeing (and hearing from teachers and staff ) conflicting terminology for services or destinations further increases people s confusion. From both a practical and public relations standpoint, it is important that we create a consistent, user-friendly wayfinding experience. Working with architects and designers, Palm Beach Community College has implemented a new system of signage and wayfinding for both the exterior of the campuses and the interior of buildings. For the system to remain effective over time, it is essential that we understand and maintain the standards of this program. This Signage Standards Manual was created to help in that effort. It is important that every facility become familiar with the contents, refer to it whenever signage issues arise and support its use by others. Thank you. AN INTRODUCTION TO WAYFINDING The purpose of this Introduction is to review the key concepts for the campus-wide wayfinding system and the various sign types the actual elements that will be used to support the system. WAYFINDING CONCEPTS As any facility that is a member of the Palm Beach Community College contemplates implementing a new or updated wayfinding system or signage elements, it is important to remember these basic concepts: A wayfinding system and its elements should be designed for the first-time visitor. Visitors should be able to find the destination(s) that they desire upon their first visit to the facility. A wayfinding system need not enable a person to get from any point in the facility to any other point in the facility. Rather, it should direct that person, through a series of sign types, along the major pathways that have been designated as public path ways. It is helpful to differentiate corridors that have been designated as public pathways through the use of different architectural materials, especially on the floor and walls, or even lighting. (Consider using techniques such as carpeting and tiles treated in a unique graphic fashion, floor-attached graphics and/or dramatic lighting effects.) If there is a continuous and complete interior route that connects all the components of the facility, the wayfinding system should take advantage of this. In facilities with more than one level, visitors should be routed first through the corridors of the main, public level of the facility to the elevator that will put them on the upper floor closest to their desired destination, then to the proper floor for the destination they wish to reach. The result is to keep as much back-and-forth traffic on the main floor of the facility as possible, thus minimizing public traffic on the upper (or lower) floors where it can interfere with teaching and staff activities. In general, room numbers are not important to successful wayfinding, other than where they designate classrooms. Classroom ranges should be displayed on signage, much as room number ranges are displayed in a hotel. PALM BEACH COMMUNITY COLLEGE, SIGNAGE STANDARDS MANUAL, March
WAYFINDING PROCESS In developing a wayfinding system for a facility, the following steps should be taken. In larger or more complex facilities, the services of the Campus Facilities Department should be engaged. Campus Facilities can help evaluate needs for an outside wayfinding consultant. 1 Using a floor plan of the facility, locate and mark the following: All public entrances All public destinations All public corridors All public elevators and stairs 2 Determine the desired routes for the public to each destination using the public corridors and elevators, noting decision points along the way. Locate directional signs at these decision points. Don t forget to help people leaving the building as well. 3 Identify the best place for the Building Directory and all Elevator Directories. 4 Make lists of the signs required for each sign type. WAYFINDING ROUTES Once a visitor enters a campus, signage located along the perimeter route needs to support the desired circulation. The signage needs to display the top destinations together with a designated color. The background color needs to reflect the designated color for the specific geographical zone in which it resides. All Palm Beach Community College campuses are uniquely divided into separate zones as illustrated in the following pages. WAYFINDING METHODOLOGY The Wayfinding and Signage Program should support the following sequence of events in leading visitors to their desired destination: Direct visitors to the campuses along major regional routes. Announce to visitors their arrival at a campus (by defining the boundaries of the campus). Direct visitors to the proper point of entry to the campus. Direct visitors to the top destinations and most convenient parking. Orient visitors as pedestrians before they leave the parking decks / surface lots. Provide directional information along the prescribed route. Identify public destinations and their public entrances. Provide directions to major regional routes to people leaving campus. PALM BEACH COMMUNITY COLLEGE, SIGNAGE STANDARDS MANUAL, March
VISUAL VOCABULARY In establishing a visual vocabulary for the wayfinding program, four elements were taken into account: color, typefaces, graphic elements and materials. The identifying colors for the various campus sections have been chosen to complement the existing campus. The colors Rose, Blue, Copper and Aqua are designed to accommodate the eggshell lettering and maintain a 70-percent contrast between the letters and the background as recommended by the Americans with Disabilities Act of The green metallic is used primarily for decorative highlights. Two typefaces are used: Myriad, a sans-serif face for more functional applications including direction-giving and place designation; and Georgia, which is used when rendering the college name. Both faces are highly readable. The primary symbol used to associate the signs with the college is the college seal and typographic logo. The graphic image of a palm leaf is used as a connecting element; painted aluminum as sign backgrounds; and painted aluminum signposts where posts are required. Posts for traffic regulatory signage are powder-coated galvanized steel posts, such as Unistrut QwikPunch 2 square posts. Please note: The sign type drawings are not presented at a consistent scale between pages; refer to design intent and shop drawings for detailed specifications. ADA GUIDELINES The signage program has been designed in compliance with signage regulations defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act. Those regulations are quite involved and beyond the scope of this reference document. The Americans with Disabilities Act requires that signs be posted at building entrances that are not handicapped accessible to direct the viewer to the nearest accessible entrance. Where possible, this sign should be freestanding, placed along the sidewalk, well in advance of the entrance. Otherwise it should be mounted directly to the wall of the building. ABOUT THIS MANUAL Note that the sign type drawings provided here are general in nature and reflect typical sign fabrication and installation techniques. They show design intent, not construction or engineering detail. The sign contractors selected to fabricate and install the signs are responsible for fabrication, installation and overall product quality. The further development and engineering of the design-intent drawings is expected to be shown in the contractor s submitted shop drawings. The investigation of actual exterior site conditions such as the existence of underground utilities as well as interior conditions including ceiling heights, wall widths and other encumbrances are the responsibility of Palm Beach Community College and the sign contractor(s) selected to install the signs. 6 Sign Type Aesthetic Elements C O L O R P A L E T T E Color Matching The Pantone Matching System, Matthews paint system, and matching 3M vinyl products are used for specifying color matches. Actual color finishes on all signage are to be matte or low luster (not shiny or glossy) and of a premium Matthews paint, or equivalent product quality. All sign fabricators should provide color matched test sample swatches, on actual materials to be used in the signage, before any actual fabrication takes place. These samples should then be compared to the actual color system match for accuracy. Pantone 5545 is the primary sign panel background color for exterior and interior signage unless the destination is located in a area color zone. Area color wayfinding zones are designated by Aqua, Blue, Copper, Rose and Gray. Most light colored letterforms on a dark background should match the Eggshell 130 3M vinyl. Green Metallic is used on select sign accents, posts, and letterforms. Note: Consistent and accurate color reproduction cannot be assured on this page due to the limitations of digital color printing technologies. For accurate color representations, please reference the actual color system chips. Gray Pantone 424 PALM BEACH COMMUNITY COLLEGE, SIGNAGE STANDARDS MANUAL, March
Sign Type Aesthetic Elements E X T E R I O R TY P O G R A P H Y All exterior signage at PBCC utilizes the typefaces Myriad Multiple Master in various weights and Georgia. Use of different typefaces other than the ones described above are not accepted. To maintain the professional appearance and clarity of information found on signage at PBCC, it is important to observe the following rules for effective signage typography: 1. The method used for identifying the name of a campus or building are in all caps or small caps where noted. 2. On directional signage, a combination of upper and lowercase letterforms is the standard as it s easier to read with multiple listings. 3. Combining letter sizes to emphasize or de-emphasize one part of a message should be used in limited applications. 4. Squeezing or compressing letterforms or graphics to fit into a limited space is not preferred. It is equally inappropriate to stretch letters or graphics to make them fill a space. Do not apply computer letterform styling like shadowing to any of the typefaces. All fonts are designed for use on both Macintosh and IBM -compatible computers. PALM BEACH COMMUNITY COLLEGE, SIGNAGE STANDARDS MANUAL, March
Sign Type Aesthetic Elements I N T E R I O R TY P O G R A P H Y Certain interior signage is required to have its message in dimensional (tactile) letterforms and translated into an abbreviated form of the Braille alphabet (Grade 2 Braille) for the sight-impaired. When this is called for, the tactile and Braille message component of the sign is to be fabricated using a photopolymer process or one of equal quality. The typeface Myriad MM painted Eggshell is to be used in most cases where letterforms must be tactile and supported by Grade 2 Braille. When tactile letterforms are to be read by sighted people and touchread by the sighted-impaired, the accepted font is Myriad MM, painted Eggshell against a dark background. See the B.2 sign type for an example. In limited cases when the tactile message does not have to be read by the sighted, the letterforms may be in sign tactile form which are unpainted so that they match the dark background, and in a straight stroke, round-ended typeface. Either a Leroy style typeface or the Adobe typeface VAG may be used, with an 80% compression on the horizontal, for the sign tactile typeface. See the B.1 sign type for an example. In both instances, the Grade 2 Braille component is painted to match the dark background. See both B.1 and B.2 sign types for examples. PALM BEACH COMMUNITY COLLEGE, SIGNAGE STANDARDS MANUAL, March
Sign Type Aesthetic Elements S Y M B O L G R A P H I C S The symbols shown here represent those typically occurring on PBCC signage. Most symbols used in signage at PBCC will be from the standards established by one or more of the following agencies or trade groups: United States Department of Transportation (USDOT) American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA) Society for Environmental Graphic Design (SEGD) International Council of Graphic Design Associations (ICOGRADA) Some symbols, like those created for the building prefix codes, are custom for each campus with standard elements and application. 14 Exterior Sign Type P R I M A R Y C A M P U S E N T R A N C E I D E N T I F I E R W I T H L E D EI.1 These single- or double-sided signs announce and celebrate a visitor s arrival at a campus, and denote the primary public entrances to the campuses. As formal gates to the campuses, they provide landmarks or visual cues that will reinforce to visitors that they are making the right decision by entering a campus at that location. Because of the number of special events scheduled on the campuses, we recommend incorporating a programmable electronic board into this sign. For more detailed specifications, see pages 1-3 of the Fabrication Addendum. PALM BEACH COMMUNITY COLLEGE, SIGNAGE STANDARDS MANUAL, March
Exterior Sign Type S E C O N D A R Y C A M P U S E N T R A N C E I D E N T I F I E R EI.2 Like the Primary Campus Entrance Identifiers, these signs announce and celebrate a visitor s arrival at a campus. They are double-sided and denote secondary public entrances to the campuses. These signs are located perpendicularly to the adjacent roadway in order to be visible to traffic approaching the entrance from either direction. As formal gates to the campuses, they provide landmarks or visual cues that will reinforce to visitors that they are making the right decision by entering a campus at that location. For more detailed specifications, see pages 4-6 of the Fabrication Addendum. PALM BEACH COMMUNITY COLLEGE, SIGNAGE STANDARDS MANUAL, March
Exterior Sign Type B O U N D A R Y M A R K E R BM.1 These signs are located at the corners of the campus and, other than being single-sided, are identical to the double-sided Secondary Campus Entrance Identifier. They mark the limits of the campus and verify to visitors that they have arrived at the campus boundary. These signs are typically located at a 45-degree angle to adjacent, intersecting roadways in order to be visible to traffic approaching the campus from either direction. These signs share a feeling of permanence and a common use of materials and graphic elements with the other elements in the wayfinding program, particularly the Campus Entrance Identifiers. For more detailed specifications, see pages 4-6 of the Fabrication Addendum. PALM BEACH COMMUNITY COLLEGE, SIGNAGE STANDARDS MANUAL, March
Exterior Sign Type B A N N E R S B Banners reinforce a visitor s sense of arrival at a campus, announce popular visitor destinations and outline the borders of the campus zones. These custom, single- and doublesided banner sets are mounted to existing light posts. There are three designs to choose from one tailored to specific campuses (B2), one for athletic venues (B3) and one that represents the college as a whole (B4, two versions). For more detailed specifications, see page 7 of the Fabrication Addendum. PALM BEACH COMMUNITY COLLEGE, SIGNAGE STANDARDS MANUAL, March
Exterior Sign Type VE H I C U L A R D I R E C T I O N A L DV.1, DV.2 Within the campus, smaller DV.1 Vehicular Directional Signs support wayfinding to local destinations. Larger DV.2 signs located around the campus perimeter support wayfinding to top destinations. The larger signs: allow for a greater letter height in response to the speed of approaching vehicles; and achieve a more permanent appearance in keeping with the Boundary Markers and Campus Entrance Identifiers. The painted aluminum signs can be single- or double-sided. If single-sided, the back is painted the generic Palm Beach dark green. The signs use interchangeable panels and exterior-grade vinyl copy and graphics. The panels allow the messages on the signs to be easily changed as locations change or are added. Panel colors reflect the designated color for the specific geographical campus zone in which the destination resides. Locations are listed first by direction (left, right and straight ahead), then by zone (with closer zones listed first), then alphabetically. Destinations in nonassigned areas are listed first within a directional grouping (as illustrated right by the Nicklaus Athletic Fields listing). The college name appears on a palm frond background on the bottom panel of the sign. Location names use the standard Myriad typeface, while the college name is in Georgia Bold Italic. All copy is centered horizontally. For more detailed specifications, see page 8 of the Fabrication Addendum. DV.1 PALM BEACH COMMUNITY COLLEGE, SIGNAGE STANDARDS MANUAL, March DV.2
Exterior Sign Type P A R K I N G L O T I D E N T I F I E R PL These four-sided aluminum signs identify parking lots, and the background color reflects the designated color for the specific campus geographical zone in which the lot resides. The signs are mounted to existing light posts, and are currently used on all campuses except for the Belle Glade campus. They use a painted background that matches the area color (whether rose, aqua, blue or copper) with a tinted palm frond background graphic. Sign copy is in the Myriad typeface, and consists of a vinyl application. All copy is centered horizontally. 21 Exterior Sign Type B U I L D I N G E N T R A N C E I D E N T I F I E R BEI This wall-mounted, single-sided sign is used to identify buildings that have student or administrative desti-nations frequently accessed by first-time visitors. It is located above the entrance of the building, and should be used only on those buildings that experience significant use by first-time visitors (such as a library or bookstore). Functional titles can be added beneath the building name. These signs are the only ones to use the pattern symbol with the tinted palm frond background graphic, which typically indicates the presence of classrooms within the building. Sign copy is in the Myriad typeface, and is centered horizontally and vertically on the sign. The pattern symbol is applied to the right side of the sign. For more detailed specifications, see page 11 of the Fabrication Addendum. PALM BEACH COMMUNITY COLLEGE, SIGNAGE STANDARDS MANUAL, March
Exterior Sign Type P E D E S T R I A N M A P / E V E N T S S I G N ME These L-shaped aluminum cabinet signs display maps of the campus and include an event board with a self-healing cork backer board to allow the posting of event listings. The cabinets are internally lighted and have glass doors with key access. They should be located at primary pedestrian campus entrances and at major pedestrian intersections. Each map depicts the full campus. (All maps are based on the same graphic scale.) The information presented on the maps includes: the names of all primary buildings/ destinations; public entrances and barrier-free entrances for the destinations; barrier-free circulation routes; and locations of emergency phones. This map directory includes a comprehensive list of all public destinations. The map panel uses a low-cost, large-format digital color printout, allowing it to be easily changed and updated. For more detailed specifications, see page 12 of the Fabrication Addendum. PALM BEACH COMMUNITY COLLEGE, SIGNAGE STANDARDS MANUAL, March
Exterior Sign Type P E D E S T R I A N D I R E C T I O N A L PD These single- or double-sided signs are used to identify pathways to nearby destinations. If single-sided, the back is painted the generic Palm Beach dark green. Destinations are ordered by direction, with those requiring a left-hand turn appearing first, followed by those requiring a right-hand turn and then those located straight ahead. Within each directional grouping, destinations are ordered by campus area, with closer areas appearing first. Sign copy is in the Myriad typeface, and the copy is centered vertically and horizontally on each of the destination panels. The panels are interchangeable for easy updating as destinations and destination names change. The college name appears on a palm frond background on the bottom panel of the sign, in the Georgia Bold Italic typeface. For more detailed specifications, see page 13 of the Fabrication Addendum.
