7) The first Peacock Feather we ll make is the Green to Blue cane with Option #1 eye cane. Run each color for the feather cane through on a thick #1 and fold each in half. Cut the outside colors on a diagonal and stack, then fold the center colors in half and cut each in half lengthwise and stack. Shape the center colors to fit in between the outside colors. 8) Run your blend through on a thick #1 first, fold that long strip in thirds and run through on a #3. Continue to run through on a #3 and folding in thirds until you reach the blend you like the best. 9) TURN your blend and place one of the solid colors against the rollers, run it through on the #3 and fan fold your blend. This blend measures about 1 wide and 4 long. 10) This fan fold blend measures about 1 wide and 4 long. 11) We need to reduce this blend down to a strip that we ll be able to run through the pasta machine. Begin by squeezing it from the center out to each end. This will help push any trapped air out of the fan fold too. Push the blend down against your table while stretching it a bit. 12) Keep working it and smoothing it out as you go. Pinch, push, flatten, roll, do whatever it takes to flatten your blend. 4

13) This blend is ready to go and it s about ½ thick, 1-½ wide and this one happens to measure about 11 long. Trim your ends and SAVE the scraps! 14) Roll a strip of black clay that is wider than your blend (2-½ or so) on a medium #3 setting and lay your blend strip on top of the black. Leave a few inches at one end, don t trim it close to the blend yet. Set your machine to the thickest setting (#1). 15) Make sure all the shades in your blend are touching the roller on your machine that is set on the THICKEST setting. Run the blend with the black through. WHATTA BIG MESS!!! 16) Carefully trim away all the excess black clay. 17) Measure and cut into three equal lengths. Lay one strip with the black against your table. Place the 2 nd strip on top of the first, place it up about ¼ from the bottom of the first. This will be the center color of the cane so make sure it s the one you want to have in the center. Lay the 3 rd strip on top of the second with the bottom equal to the first. 18) We now have a long length of the blend with black outline grouped in three. This strip measures 27, yours may be different, don t panic! 5

19) Cut 6 equal pieces plus one piece that is half the length of the 6, this shorter length is for the center top of our cane. 20) Pinch the edge of each of the equal lengths. Start in the center and pinch your way out to each end, this will push the air out. 21) Working with the 6 long pieces, place one of them face down (color side) on your table. Take a second piece and butt the pinched edge of that up against the pinched edge of the first one. Let it fall over the first length. 22) Fit the 2 nd piece in snugly. It shouldn t line up at the other edge, it should be lower than the first piece. 23) Continue to butt the remaining lengths, fold them over and fit snugly. 24) Check the outer edge and push out any trapped air from between the slices. 6

25) Now your cane resembles half a feather! 26) Cut this entire cane in half and let them rest for a bit. 27) This is eye cane Option #1, it makes a large amount of cane. If you only want it for one feather cane. you can cut the amounts down to fit your needs, we ll be using a piece 2 long and about ¾ across. -1 oz (½ a pack) Ultramarine Blue or Blue Glitter clay -2 oz Light Blue I also used Stampin Stuff Embossing Powder - Kaleidoscope 28) To add a little sparkle, roll out the blue on a thick #1 and sprinkle the embossing powder on top. Then continue to fold and roll until it s all mixed together well. Form the clay into a log shape and about 3 long. 29) Now we need to make a little dip in the clay, to do this use a roller, pen or large knitting needle, anything that will help you create a dip. 30) Roll your lighter blue clay on a thick #1 and the width of the log. Fill in the dip by fan folding the light blue until the dip of the log is filled in. Wrap the remainder of the light blue all around the cane a couple times. 7

31) Just to be on the safe side, mark the center top of the eye cane for help in placing it within the cane. Mark the center top lightly with your blade. 32) If you can t see the mark well enough, place a thin strip of a darker shade of clay along the top. 33) Use a roller or large knitting needle begin to create a space for your eye cane in both halves of the feather. 34) You can leave the eye round, or pinch it slightly at the bottom to fit. 35) Using the darker shade of clay as a guide, lay the eye cane in along the spaces you made. Place the center length piece along one half of the feather. 36) Take the cane apart and smooth out the bottom edge with your finger. 8

37) Push both halves of the feather together. 38) Smooth out the top join. 39) Let your cane rest for at least 6 hours or overnight to avoid any distortion during reduction. I didn t and my cane came out a wee bit wonky, but I like wonky so it worked out ok. 40) Begin reducing your cane by pushing it together from the sides using the palms of your hands. 41) To help know where the center bottom of your cane is during further reduction, add a small piece of lighter color clay along the center. 42) Continue to push, rotating your cane a bit each time and push some more, all around. Flip your cane over and repeat. It s so much easier to reduce a round cane, so carefully round the top of the feather out as you begin to reduce. 9

43) When your cane gets down to a size your fingers can fit around, pull the outer clay up over the ends. This creates a little cap and your helps in reducing any distortion from happening. 44) Continue reducing your feather by choking your cane in the center and working out to each end. Roll it smooth and continue until you get it to the size you want. You can cut off a couple of inches from the main cane and reduce that piece further to get a variety of sizes to work with. 45) Normally for a leaf cane we would pinch along the top to make a leaf shape, for a Peacock Feather pinch slightly along the bottom. If I had let the eye cane rest a little longer, it wouldn't look so squished, but I like squished! 46) Let's make the Purple to Blue Peacock Feather cane, condition your clay and fold each in half. Cut the outside colors on the diagonal and flip and stack. Cut the center colors in half lengthwise and stack. Shape into the positions shown. 48) Reduce this blend like we did before. It should measure about ½ thick, 1-½ wide and 11 long or thereabouts. Trim your ends and SAVE the scraps! 47) Turn your blend so a solid color is touching the rollers and run this through on a medium #3. Fan fold the blend. 10

49) This feather cane is constructed in some similar ways as the first, but we don t group them in three. Begin with rolling a strip of black clay that is wider than your blend (2-½ or so) on a medium #3 setting and lay your blend strip on top of the black. Leave a few inches at one end, don t trim it close to the blend yet. Set your machine to the thickest setting (#1). 50) Make sure all the shades in your blend are touching the roller on your machine that is set on the THICKEST setting. Run the blend with the black through. WHATTA MESS AGAIN!!! 51) Carefully trim away all the excess black clay. Cut as many 4 lengths as you can get out of this long strip. I managed to get 20 equal lengths. 52) Choose which color you want to have in the center. Lay one length against your table and begin to stack the others just like we did before by lining up the edge and then folding it over the previous length. 53) Continue until all but the center length is placed in position. Let this cane rest and let's work on Option #2 Eye cane. 54) Make a regular bullseye blend using the Ultramarine blue to Peppermint to White. Give it a thin #4 wrap of black. Cut a piece about 2 long and ¾ to 1 across. Using a pen this time, make an indent lengthwise in the blend. 11

55) Take a small piece of the turquoise clay and roll it up to fit into the indent we just made. 56) Roll the remainder of the turquoise clay on a thick #1 setting and have it the same width as the blend. Wrap the strip of turquoise around the blend twice. 57) Create a nest in the feather halves that will fit the Eye cane. 58) Before you insert the Eye cane, make a mark along the top of the cane so you ll be sure to place it in straight. 59) Fit the Eye cane snugly in between the two feather halves. You could add a strip of the leftover clay at the bottom of the eye cane just to give a little added interest to your finished cane. 60) If you didn t add the extra piece to your cane, create a small piece of leftover clay and place that to the center bottom of the cane. This will help to keep the cane straight while reducing it. 12

61) I didn t let it all REST before I reduced it! 62) Green to Teal with translucent outline Peacock Feather cane layout for the blend is similar to the last feather. 64) Turn your blend so a solid color is touching the rollers and run this through on a medium #3. Fan fold the blend and reduce it like we did before. It should measure about ½ thick, 1-½ wide and 11 long or there abouts. 63) Run it through just like before and create the blend you like the best. 65) Doing exactly as we ve been doing, roll a strip of black clay that is wider than your blend (2-½ or so) on a medium #3 setting and lay your blend strip on top of the black. Leave a few inches at one end, don t trim it close to the blend yet. Using the Silver clay, roll a strip of that on a medium #3 and set that UNDER the black. Set your machine to the thickest setting (#1). 66) Make sure all the shades in your blend are touching the roller on your machine that is set on the THICKEST setting. Run the blend with the black AND silver through. MAKE A BIG MESS AGAIN!!! 13

67) Carefully trim away all the excess clay. Divide the long strip into three equal pieces. Place one with the black against the table and place the 2 nd on top of that one about ¼ up higher from the bottom of the first length. 68) Place the third length on top of the second, lining up the bottom edge with the first length we laid down. 69) Pinch the entire bottom edge to remove any air, (this will be the center of your cane). 70) Condition your translucent clay and roll a long strip out on the thickest setting #1. Fill in the small areas on the top of our long strip. 71) Lay the translucent in between the lengths and trim away the excess. Now both edges are filled in with translucent. You can use another color clay in this area if you prefer, it s up to you whether you even want to add this in. 72) Cut 6 equal pieces plus one piece that is half the length of the 6, this shorter length is for the center top of our cane. From this 27 piece I cut 6 pieces that are 4 long and 1 piece that is 2 long. 14

73) Lay one length against your table and butt the edge of another length against the first. Let it fold over and smooth it out. 74) Sometimes using a ruler will help to butt that edge up snugly. 75) With all your long lengths placed, smooth out the top and push any trapped air out. 76) Take a strip of the translucent clay rolled on a thick #1 setting and place it along the outer edge of the cane. 77) Push the air out of the translucent we just placed down. Trim away the excess. 78) Trim away any messy looking areas on the inside edge just to clean it up a bit. 15

79) Set this aside, let it REST and let s work on the Eye cane Option #3. Using a 2 piece of the ultramarine to peppermint to white bullseye cane we made before, create an indent in it lengthwise. 80) Roll a piece of the turquoise clay into a log shape and fit it into the indent of the blend 81) Add some of the scrap clay to the balance of the turquoise just to get a little darker shade. 82) Wrap the Eye cane with the dark turquoise a couple times. 83) Create a nest area for the eye cane. Sometimes rolling it against your table helps to get a nice little nest. 84) Cut the feather cane in half. 16

85) Mark the top and bottom of the Eye cane lightly with your blade and set it into your feather cane. 86) Insert the length for the center of the feather. Let it rest for at least 6 hours or overnight. 87) Begin reducing your feather by pushing on both sides, rotate the cane and push. Then flip it over and do it all over again from the center out to the end. 88) There s a nice registration line on the top of the cane where the two halves meet up. 89) But I like to put one at the bottom of the cane as well. I find this so helpful in reducing to keep the cane straight and prevent it from twisting around. 90) During all the pushing and smoothing, when your cane gets down to a size that you can wrap your fingers around it, pull the side clay up over the top and create a cap on both ends. 17

91) Continue to reduce by choking it in the center and working out to each end, roll it smooth against your table. Don t forget to make a variety of sizes to use in your gorgeous Peacock Feather projects! 92) Another beautiful Peacock Feather cane for our collection! Peacock Feather #1 cane combines groups of three to create the veins of our feather. Peacock Feather #2 uses 20 lengths to create the feather. Peacock Feather #3 uses both silver and black to outline each vein and also uses translucent clay to make an outline around the feather. 18

93) Bonus Blend Orange feather. -2 oz Green -2 oz Orange -2 oz Violet -2 oz White Pearl 94) Layout used Blend created. 95) Bonus Blend Yellow to Peacock. -2 oz Yellow -2 oz White -1 oz Gold -2 oz Peacock 96) Layout used Blend created. 19

97) Bonus Blend Emerald Green to Purple. -2 oz Purple -2 oz Pearl -2 oz Silver -2 oz Emerald 98) Layout used Blend created. 20

Mix and match and experiment with blends and the different feather making techniques to create your own unique creations! Don't forget that Peacock Feather canes make great leaf canes when you leave the eye cane out. I love using these blend layouts for flowers too! A good tip to remember is to clean your blade every slice or two whenever you use Pearl, Metallic or Glitter clay this will prevent your slices from getting those tiny lines through the slice caused from a piece of the pearl being stuck on the blade. Peacock Feathers aren t just for Peacocks anymore! 21

HINTS THAT I HAVE FOUND HELPFUL I've been sending out this Tip Sheet since 2000 maybe you will find these basic tips helpful too if you don't already know them... -To REDUCE a round cane, pinch off the ends to close (so you won t lose a lot of the pattern) and gently squish or choke the cane evenly from the center out to the ends. For square canes you can start in the center and gently stretch the cane slowly. You can take some square canes and make them round (depending on the pattern) just round the edges with your fingers. -BAKING: I bake my pieces on an old cookie sheet lined with parchment paper that avoids any shine to the piece. For delicate items (eggs etc) place them on polyfill batting to bake them. The makers of Sculpey clay (Polyform Products) provide the following baking instructions Bake at 275 degrees F for 15 minutes per ¼ of thickness. Thicker pieces may require additional baking time. It is a good idea to check the accuracy of your oven with an oven thermometer. Avoid over baking, USE GOOD VENTILATION, and do not inhale fumes. DO NOT use a microwave oven. I bake all my work at 265 for 18 minutes. -GESSO: I apply a coat of Gesso to bisque, wood and eggs that I'm going to cover. I find my slices of cane work stick and bake better. -SEALER I prefer PLEDGE with FUTURE shine floor wax on finished baked pieces. It s acrylic and a whole lot cheaper. I transfer from the bottle to a clean spice jar, that way I can clean out the jar when needed without wasting a lot of glaze. I put on one coat, let it dry, bake at 225 for 7 minutes, let it cool and repeat this process for up to 5 baked on coats for a glass-like finish. DO NOT do this on plastic or pens, reheating will melt the plastic. -For simple PENS to cover I only use the BIC STICK pens, the crystal pens imploded on me and the generic type melted. There are pen kits that make up retractable pens. -BEADS made from canes with an overall swirl pattern make terrific and interesting beads, so do flower slices simply curled over a wire. I reduce a piece of cane down to a ½ or so, then I slice off ¼ little pieces. You can use them as they are or roll into a ball or make little tube or oval shapes. I use a #18 or #22 gauge floral wire and poke a hole thru one end of the bead to the center then the other end to the center and string them on the wire for baking. I seal them while they are still on the wire too, I find that to be the easiest. BEST ADVICE: If your not sure if something you re covering will melt or implode, bake one without clay on it first. If you have any questions about clay or making canes, please feel free to me at harm@rayharm.com. I ll try to help if I can. 22
