2 Software Lesson: Toile Jardin By Tamara Evans While this quilt may look intricate and difficult, the embroidery does all the work in this garden. Each flower block contains a beautiful bloom with a custom trellis background. Plant the flower blocks between the lattice sashing, and watch how quickly this garden grows. The following instructions use the Floriani Total Control Professional software package to create the block and sashing combinations for the Toile Jardin quilt. The lesson teaches how to create the background quilting along with the coordinating sashing and corners. The quilting element designs created in this lesson are available on the design disk if Floriani software is not available. Please see the quilt construction lesson for instructions on stitching the finished designs. Part A Create flower blocks Step 1 Open the design Open design in the software. Enter the following settings (if necessary), then select OK. Distance (mm): 2.0 Repeats: 1 Select the entire image and group by selecting the group icon. Step 2 Create Border Click on icon to add an additional color to the design. With the design selected, right click and select Create Border 2

3 With the border still selected, right click on color 2 to change the outline color. With the square selected, resize the square to exactly 5.00 in the properties box, then click apply. With the border still selected, right click, select Convert To then select Complex Fill. With the square selected, right click, select Convert To then select Complex Fill. Click the Move to Back Icon, to move the filled border segment behind the flower. Step 3 Create the block With the square selected, click the Move to Back icon. Use the Artwork tool to create a square. Tip: Depress the shift key while dragging the cursor to create a perfect square. 3

4 Select all elements. Right click. Select Align then select Center. This will align all the elements of the design in the center of the square. Select the second color in the sequence box. Right click. Select Remove Overlaps. This action will remove all of the background stitches behind the flower design. In the properties box (with the background square selected), change the stitch length to 3.5 mm and the density to 12. Click Apply to make the changes. The second color is selected, right click select Delete. The reason for creating this segment was to remove the underlying stitches around the design. Its job is complete and is no longer necessary. With the background square selected, right click then select Create Border. This function will create a border around the outside of the square as well as around the cut out portion of the inside of the background. Step 4 Create the quilting stitches With the quilting background square selected, click on the icon Move to Front. This action makes the flower stitch first and the background stitch last. Select the background square (item 1 in the sequence menu). In the properties box change the fill type to Shape. Then select shape

5 To view the final design, click on the 3D icon. Save the design in the C2S format. Then, save the file in the design format required for the embroidery machine. With the square selected, right click. Select Convert To, then Complex Fill. Note By saving the design in the C2S format, all of the design elements (i.e. fill type, stitch length, etc.) are saved with the design. If future changes need to be made, the design will not have to be digitized again. In the stitch format for the machine, only the stitches save not the component information. Repeat the above steps for each design to be included in the final quilt. The quilt requires 16 flower blocks. Part B Create Quilted Corner and Sashing Blocks With the square selected, change the Fill type in the properties box to Shape. Then select shape 103. Select apply. Open a new page. For best results, set the grid on the screen to " before creating the Corner and Sashing Blocks. Step 1 Create Corner Block In the properties box, change the stitch length to 3.5 and the Density to Select Apply to effect the changes. Select the artwork tool. Select the Rectangle and create a 2 square. 5

6 With the design selected, right click and select Create Border. This will place a running stitch around the corner block. With the rectangle selected, change the Fill type in the properties box to Shape. Then select shape 103. To view the final design, click on the 3D icon. Save the design in the C2S format. Then, save the file in the design format required for the embroidery machine. Step 2 Create Sashing Block Create a new page. Set the grid size to. Change the Stitch length to 3.5 mm. Change the Density (mm) to 12. Select apply to effect the changes. Use the artwork tool to create a rectangle. Resize the rectangle to 2 wide by 5 high. Deselect the Maintain Aspect Ratio option to set each size independently. Click Apply to effect the changes. With the sashing rectangle selected, right click. Select Create Border. This will create a run stitch border around the sashing block. With the rectangle selected, right click then select Convert To and Complex Fill. 6

7 With the rectangle selected, click the Shape icon. Right click again to display the node for the center of the shape, a pink circle. Right click to effect the change in the shape fill. Click and hold the left mouse key and move the pink circle (the center of the shape) 1 above the top center of the sashing block (2 grid lines = 1 ). This will adjust the shape fill in the sashing block to be an extension of the corner block created in the previous step. To view the final design, click on the 3D icon.
