1 Planning Machine Embroidery Digitizing and Designs Floriani FTCU Digitizing Fill stitches with a hole Or Add a hole to a Filled stitch object Create a digitizing plan It may be helpful to print a photocopy of the image that you will be digitizing Decide the order in which the parts of the image will be stitched - back to front - to plan the pathing Number each part of the image Decide colors for each part of the image Determine stitch type for each part of the image Note: There are two different ways of adding a hole to a Fill stitch. Your choice depends upon whether the object already has a Fill Stitch applied or not. Method One trace the hole as you are tracing the object (before the FILL is applied) Method Two use this method if the object already has a FILL stitch applied. Stitches OPEN THE IMAGE: This tutorial will be using an image from the Backdrop Library in Floriani FTCU. 1. Click on NEW page icon on the top tool bar (under the word FILE). 2. Select FILL stitch tool (on toolbar in top row) 2. In properties box, leave FILL TYPE as STANDARD 3. Stitch length is default is 3.5mm leave as is for now 4. Make note of the following items while watching the stitch player: a. Correct stitching order of all segments b. Correct color order c. Correct starts and stops d. Correct tie ins and tie offs for color changes and jump stitches 4. Make necessary adjustments by using the following steps. STITCHING ORDER 1. In the sequence view, open each color + sign and adjust the stitching order of segments 2. Click on a segment and drag it to a new location as needed COLOR ORDER 1. In the sequence view, you can move individual segments or close the + sign and move the whole color to reorder 2. Refer to the above Planning Section and drag identical colors together in the sequence view to avoid numerous color changes 3. NOTE: sometimes it may be necessary to keep colors in multiple locations based on the needed stitching order TIP: Use caution when using the COLOR SORT feature of the software. Sometimes it will add colors together when they really needed to be stitched separately. 10
11 START and STOP To check locations: 1. In the sequence view, click on a stitch segment to highlight. 2. Click on the SHAPE icon on left toolbar. 3. Adjust the green start dot and red stop dot as needed 4. In the sequence view, open each color + sign, click on first stitch segment to highlight. 2. In the properties box, click on COMMANDS tab 3. Set tie-in for the first segment of each color 4. Set tie-off for the last segment of each color 5. This will assure that there will be tie-in and tie-off for each color change when your design is stitching 6. Also, review stitch segments for jump stitch locations and set tie-in and tie-offs Final Review REVIEW DESIGN WITH STITCH PLAYER FINAL TIME 1. Turn off background to review the design stitching a final time a. Click on the Backdrop tool (on left side bar), a box will show around the design b. Click on the SELECT HOOP icon (on left side bar) 2. Choose machine format and desired hoop size for your design. Click OK. 11
12 3. The design will automatically center itself inside the hoop a. This will be important for the design to begin stitching in center alignment since you will most likely be hooping your fabric to be center aligned SAVING A DESIGN FILE 1. Save design in WAF format a. Click on FILE > SAVE AS > navigate to folder to save design b. NOTE: It is recommended to save in a WAF file format to be able to edit the design later 2. Save design in your machine format a. Delete background before saving to machine format - recommended b. Click on the Backdrop tool (on left side bar), a box will show around the design c. Click the DELETE key on your keyboard and the backdrop will be deleted d. Click on FILE > SAVE AS > navigate to folder to save design e. Name the design file f. Choose the file format, in the dropdown box, that is needed for your brand of embroidery machine g. Click SAVE 12
13 TIP: To save on a USB stick Click on FILE > SAVE AS > navigate to your USB drive STITCH TEST SAMPLE It is recommended that you stitch a test sample of the digitized design. Use the same fabric, stabilizer and thread as you will be using in your project If there are any problems with your test sample: OPEN the WAF file and review the above EDIT steps to correct the design. SAVE both WAF file and machine embroidery file format again. I hope this tutorial has been helpful to you. If you have any questions or comments, please contact me at embroiderygatherings@gmail.com.
