2 Step 1 If you refer to the first image of this PDF you will notice a line drawing of the Blue Mountains Scene. Transfer this image onto the canvas with a pencil. The drawing is fairly simple but take care to get the horizon line in the right position, this has a bearing on perspective from the viewer. Don t move onto the next step until you are happy with your drawing. When you draw a larger drawing onto a canvas, it is better to hold the pencil at arms length and view it from a distance. Step 2 Under painting the scene - To create some warmth from within and create denser top colours, we lay on an undercoat of Yellow Ochre and Burnt Sienna. Mix this with a little water so it is translucent and lay the colour over the entire canvas with the 75 mm artist s taklon brush. Refer to the print out of the finished painting and paint in the darker parts. Areas like the cliff faces and shadow areas.

3 Step 3 Painting the sky - Squeeze out some Crimson Red, Phthalo Blue and White oil paint. Turn the canvas upside down and paint some of the White in the sky area and then lightly blend some Phthalo into the area that will be at the top of the canvas and fade it out when you reach around the half way mark of the sky. Next, add some Crimson into the white just above the horizon line and blend it into the blue. Turn the canvas over and then add pure White along the horizon line. If you want to lay in some clouds, do this with pure White and softly blend this into the wet sky. Create a horizontal flat part at the bottom of each cloud. Step 4 Painting the 1st set of distant mountains - The first set of peaks are Mauve made from White, Crimson and Phthalo. The farthest and lightest is White with a touch of Pthalo and the next set is Phthalo and White. I then create a dirty Green from White, Permanent Green and Ochre, lay this into the mountain range closest to us, and lay this colour onto the top and below the cliffs and bring it down the bank. I then lay some Burnt Sienna into the cliffs and pure Ultra Marine on to the edge of the mountain. This will create a sense of contrast and depth. Step 5 Under painting the Middle and Front Mountain Ranges - Create a thin mix from Ultra Marine and Medium. Make sure the coat is fairly Translucent. Make sure the coat on the front mountain range is a little darker. Use a large brush for this and don t make the brush strokes to consistent.

4 Step 6 Painting the middle mountains - The first step is to create some colours for this middle mountain range. Because this range is closer the Greens will be a little less blue. Create a mix from Permanent Green, White, Ultra Marine and Ochre. Lay this into the top of the mountain with a flat brush. Next lay some Yellow Ochre into the middle of the range with the small palette knife. I then lay in some Blues and Creams. I apply these colours in a painterly manner. Next I apply some of that Green mix in to the bank of the mountain range. To suggest vegetation from a distance loosely drag the paint in all directions. Make sure there is a little bit of that blue under painting show through. Step 7 Painting the mountains in the foreground - First lay some more of that green into the top of the range but add a little yellow to lighten it as it is closer to the viewier. Next I create a series of Red Ochers mixed with white in varying shades. Block the colours in with the palette knife, and then fine tune them with the small brush. Refer to the last image in the PDF as to where to lay the colours in. Lastly lay in some of that green down the bank to suggest the trees. Use the same method you used in step 6 but add a little more yellow to lighten the Green....Until next time Keep on painting
