For stability ad looks, I used riftsaw stock with straight grai as opposed to the cathedral grai of flatsaw boards. I cut both halves from the same board for the best grai match. Each half is otched at the table saw to make the cross stitches, ad the glued together. Shallow dadoes o the top make room for the stripes. The feet are cut from a walut dowel rod. From this stock, rip a ½"-wide legth of the walut for the filler strips, ad two ¼"-wide legths of maple for the laces. (This will mimic the fie seam of the laces o a actual leather football.) For safety ad accuracy, I used a featherboard at the table saw usig a zero-clearace isert. Now lay out the slots for eight cross stitches. Tape together the halves keepig the eds flush. Mark four cross stitches o each side of a cross grai ceterlie. These slots require two separate cuttig sessios at the table saw. Oce all the slots are cut, glue the halves together. The cut ad istall eight cross stitch pieces. MAPLE LACES PIECES 4 6 4" Make the football blak WALNUT HALVES 4 4" WALNUT FILLER STRIPS 2 3 8" Shallow slots i both halves. Istall a 4" dado set i your table saw ad set the cutter height at 3 8". Put the halves together with double-stick tape, makig the eds ad iside edges fl ush. Attach a wood auxiliary fece to your miter gauge to elimiate tearout. Alig the slot layout with the cutter, clamp, ad cut. Idexig key Deeper slots i the wider half. Separate the halves from each other ad raise the cutter to 8". Now, fi ish cuttig the cross-stitch slots i the wider half that cotais the legthwise lace parts, registerig o the slots cut earlier. A rectagular football. Use the "-wide cross-stitch pieces as idexig keys to esure precise aligmet. Oce fully clamped ad aliged, remove the keys to prevet them from beig glued i place. Use moisteed cotto swabs to remove glue i the slots. Fially, glue i place the cross stitch pieces ad sad them fl ush whe dry. 28

I give the stripe pieces a permaet bed alog their legths ad apply glue to oly the middle two iches, clampig the cocave faces ito the dadoes.

Copy the Quarter Football Template (p. 2), ad trace the shape as show. Cut out the shape, ad the sad ad roud over the edges. Make the feet from ⅞"-dia.

I saded the etire football through 220-grit ad applied mieral oil. It s almost time for kick-off.

Copy the Quarter Football Template (p. 2), ad trace the shape as show. Cut out the shape, ad the sad ad roud over the edges. Make the feet from ⅞"-dia. dowel rod. Just cut four ⅝"-log pieces, ad glue them ito ¼"-deep holes drilled with a Forster bit. I saded the etire football through 220-grit ad applied mieral oil. It s almost time for kick-off. Use a disc sader to remove saw marks ad achieve a smooth, accurate edge.
