1 Andrew SIMMS is a political economist, environmentalist and co-founder of the New Weather Institute. He is a research associate at the Centre for Global Political Economy, University of Sussex, and a fellow of the New Economics Foundation (NEF), where he was policy director for over a decade. During that time he founded NEF s work programme on climate change, energy and interdependence, instigated their Great Transition project, and ran work on local economies coining the term clone towns to describe the homogenisation of high streets by chain stores. His books include Tescopoly on the supermarket Tesco s dominance of the grocery market, Ecological Debt: the Health of the Planet and the Wealth of Nations, co-authored The New Economics, and Eminent Corporations: the Rise and Fall of the Great British Corporation, and edited Do Good Lives Have to Cost the Earth?. He was part of the group which produced the Green New Deal a joint policy response to the financial crisis and he devised the concept of ecological debt day to illustrate when in the year we begin living beyond our environmental means. He was described by New Scientist Magazine as 'a master at joined-up progressive thinking and his current work focuses on the dynamics of achieving rapid economic transition in the time frame determined by meeting climate change targets, and developing new economic narratives. His latest book Cancel the Apocalypse: the New Path to Prosperity is manifesto of new economic possibilities. He tweets Ha-Joon CHANG, Professor of Economics at University of Cambridge. In addition to numerous journal articles and book chapters, he has published 16 authored books (five co-authored) and 10 edited books. His main books include The Political Economy of Industrial Policy, Kicking Away the Ladder, Bad Samaritans, 23 Things They Don t Tell You About Capitalism, and Economics: The User s Guide. By 2018, his writings will have been translated and published in 41 languages and 44 countries. Worldwide, his books have sold around 2 million copies. He is the winner of the 2003 Gunnar Myrdal Prize and the 2005 Wassily Leontief Prize. He was ranked no. 9 in the Prospect magazine s World Thinkers 2014 poll.
2 Ákos DOMBI, associate professor at the Eötvös Loránd University and the head of the Department of Comparative Economics. He graduated in economics from the University of Pécs and earned his PhD degree from the Budapest University of Technology and Economics. His main research areas are the economic policies of Central European post-socialist countries and economic development. His papers were published in Acta Oeconomica, Post-Communist Economies, Bulletin of Economic Research, and Hungarian Economic Review. He was a visiting scholar at the University of Pisa, Universitaet Wien, and Freie Universitaet Berlin. He was a lecturer at the Freie Universitaet Berlin. Currently, he participates in two international research projects on state capitalism (in collaboration with the Poznan University of Economics and Business) and the deep historical and cultural roots of economic development (in collaboration with the Freie Universitaet Berlin). Zoltán POGÁTSA, Associate Professor at University of Sopron, lecturer at CEU, ELTE and University of Verona. He a Hungarian political economist and lecturer at the University of Sopron, focusing on the economics of European integration. He has published six books and numerous professional and media articles, and is a regular commentator in Hungarian and international media on issues related to European integration and economic development. His book Heterodox International Political Economics, offers a number of different perspectives on understanding the global economy of the 21st century. In 2013 he spent a year on a Greek government research grant in Athens. He summarised his inquiries into the Greek crisis in a book entitled The Political Economy of the Greek Crisis. Three times awarded in the contest of Polish Economic Society for best academic textbooks. Awarded Doctor Honoris Causa honorary title by the University of Economics in Katowice ( 2015). Kamil GALUŠČÁK has been advisor to the Board of the Czech National Bank since March 2017 and since January 2018 President of the Czech Economic Society. In he has been Director of the Economic Research Department of the Czech National Bank. Prior to that appointment he worked at several positions in the Monetary Department and the Economic Research Department of the Czech National Bank. After graduating in physics at Charles University, Mr. Galuščák received a Ph.D. in economics from CERGE-EI in Prague. He publishes articles mainly in labour economics, applied econometrics and international trade.
4 Martin KAHANEC, President of the Slovak Economic Association, founder and Science Director of Central European Labour Studies Institute (CELSI). He is Associate Professor at the Central European University in Budapest. Visiting Research Fellow at Harvard University's Labor and Worklife Program. Visiting Research Fellow, Deputy Program Director "Migration", the leader of the research sub-area EU Enlargement and the Labor Markets and former Deputy Director of Research (2009) at the Institute for the Study of Labor (IZA) in Bonn, Germany. His main research interests are labor and population economics, ethnicity, migration, and reforms in Central Eastern European labor markets. Martin Kahanec has published in peerreviewed academic journals, contributed chapters in collected volumes including the Oxford Handbook of Economic Inequality (OxfordUP) and the International Handbook on the Economics of Migration (Edward Elgar), and he has edited several scientific book volumes and journal special issues. He is the Managing Editor of the IZA Journal of European Labor Studies, Associate Editor of the International Journal of Manpower, and member of the Editorial Board of Transfer: European Review of Labour and Research. Martin Kahanec has held several advisory positions and leading roles in a number of scientific and policy projects with the World Bank, the European Commission, OECD, and other international and national institutions. Tamás HALM, editor-in-chief of the monthly Economic Journal of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (Közgazdasági Szemle), member of HEA s Board. He teaches at Budapest Business School as well as the National University of Public Service in Budapest. His courses deal with European integration and international finance as well as economic policy. Previously, he served, inter alia, as under-secretary of state in the National Development Office ( ) responsible for channelling EU support to Hungary, then as secretary-general of the Economic and Social Council of the Republic of Hungary ( ). Between 1999 and 2014 he was the secretary-general of the Hungarian Economic Association. Currently he is a board member of the Association.
5 Magdolna CSATH, Professor Emeritus, Szent István University Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences, doctor of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (HAS), Research Professor of the National University of Public Service. She worked as a professor in the USA for five years and in the UK for two years. At present she is a visiting professor of the University of Economic Sciences in Prague. Professor Csath serves on the Competitiveness Council of the Minister for National Economics. She is responsible for the Economic Stability and National Competitiveness research field in the Good State, Good Governance research project, and the leader of a team undertaking research on the Soft and social factors of competitiveness subject at NUPS. Professor Csath has been promoting alternative thinking for a long time. She published a book with the title: The economy has to serve human beings and not the other way around in She is the permanent reviewer of the British International Journal of Organization Analysis, and the International Journal of Development and Learning in Organizations. Professor Csath is also an elected member of the Committee of Scientific Business Administration at HAS. István KÓNYA, Senior Research Fellow at Centre for Economic and Regional Studies, Hungarian Academy of Sciences. He was a Principal Researcher at the Research Department at Magyar Nemzeti Bank (the central bank of Hungary), and a Visiting Professor at the Economics Department at Central European University. Before coming to Budapest, he worked as an Assistant Professor at Boston College ( ). His research interests are in economic growth, labor economics and international economics. His current research focuses on growth and convergence in Central and Eastern Europe, labor market search and wage rigidities, and the role of exchange rate regimes in the growth process. István received his Ph.D. from Northwestern University in He also holds an M.A. in Economics from the Budapest University of Economics Sciences (1996). He currently teaches Macroeconomic Theory (MA) and Growth and Development (PhD).
6 László MURAKÖZY, President, Committee on Economics of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Professor of economics at the Szent István University. He graduated at the Karl Marx Economic University (Today Corvinus University). After for years teaching in the Karl Marx University he moved to the Kossuth Lajos University in Debrecen. From 1989 he became the chair of Economic Department and director of Institute of Social Sciences. He was the organizer and the funding dean of the new School of Business and Economics of the integrated Debrecen University. In 2014 he joined to the Szent Istvan University. His main research fields: international and institutional economics, varieties of socialist and capitalist systems, public policy in Europe, economic policy of Hungary, South-East- Asian economic development. He has PhD and Doctor of Science degree from the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. From 2014 he is the President of the Economic Committee of the Hungarian Academy of Science. László TRAUTMANN, Associate Professor, Dean of Faculty of Economics at BCE, President of Development Economics Section of the HEA. After his graduation at Karl Marx University in Budapest (recently Corvinus University of Budapest) László Trautmann started to work at the Department of Political Economy of the same university as an assistant lecturer. In 1997 he defended his PhD thesis. His topic was the influence of classical political economy for the modern economy. In 2001 he was appointed to the assistant professor to the Department of Microeconomics. In 2003 he filled the position of the vice dean of Faculty of Economics. From 2005 till 2014 he served as a dean of Faculty of Economics. In 2014 he get a habilitation degree from his university for a thesis about the economic aspect of the ancient Greek philosophy. In 2005 he took part in the establishing a new journal with his colleagues where he get the position of Editor-in-Chief. The name of the journal is Economic Review of Theory and Practice in English (in Hungarian Köz-gazdaság). From 2005 till 2017 he edited the official journal of the Corvinus University of Budapest called Society and Economy.
7 Barnabás VIRÁG is an Executive Director in the Central Bank of Hungary responsible for monetary policy, forecasting, foreign reserves and risk management. He is an economist with a Finance Major, who began his professional career at the Ministry of Finance as an analyst at the Monetary Policy Division in In 2003 he joined the Central Bank of Hungary as an Economist. From 2009 he has led the forecasting work of the Monetary Strategy and Economic Analysis Department and from 2015 to September 2017 Barnabás was the executive director in the Executive Directorate for Monetary Policy, Financial Stability and Lending Incentives at the Bank. From September 2017 he is responsible for the monetary policy toolkit as well and he is now Executive Director for Monetary Policy and Economic Analysis. He regularly makes publications in topics of economic growth, inflation and monetary policy in Hungary. Kristóf LEHMANN, Acting Head of MNB Department at Corvinus University of Budapest.. He is the head of the Monetary Strategy Department of the Magyar Nemzeti Bank (Hungarian Central Bank). His career started at the Hungarian Development Bank, and from 2008 he prepared macroeconomic analysis for the German DZ Bank. He obtained his PhD at the Corvinus University of Budapest. He has been working at the Magyar Nemzeti Bank since 2011, and is a member of the International Relations Committee of the European Central Bank. He is an associate professor and the head of the MNB Department at Corvinus University of Budapest. Éva HEGEDÜS, Secretary General, Hungarian Economic Association, CEO and Chairperson of the GRÁNIT Bank Zrt. She was born in Eger, Hungary. She graduated from Budapest University of Economics with honors and began to work as an analyst in 1979 at the Industry and Production Engineering Institute. She then worked at various governmental offices between From 1993 she became Deputy State Secretary at the Ministry of Finance. In 1997 she took part in the foundation of FHB Mortgage Bank, and became head of the risk management and security department as Deputy CEO. She organized the introduction of the mortgage bond in Hungary. Between 2000 and 2002 she worked at the
8 Ministry of Economic Affairs and was responsible for regulating the Hungarian energy sector s liberalization and housing policy as Deputy State Secretary. Between 2002 and 2006 she served as managing director of OTP Bank Hungary, at the retail banking directorate. At the same time she was the Chairperson of OTP Building Society. In 2006 she became Chairperson and CEO of BG Magyarország Ingatlanfinanszírozási Ltd. and BG Magyarország Lízing Ltd. In May 2010 Ms. Hegedüs became the Chief Executive Officer of Gránit Bank Zrt. and Vice-President, then President of its Board. Furthermore, she currently serves as Secretary General of the Hungarian Economic Association. Gyula PLESCHINGER, President of Hungarian Economic Association, Member of the Monetary Policy Council of the National Bank of Hungary. Following several years of experience at companies and local authorities, he was appointed Deputy Head of the Investment Department at OTP Bank in He was Chief Executive Officer of OTP Securities between 1990 and 2000, before moving on to become Deputy Chief Executive Officer in charge of the investment banking and investment services areas of Raiffeisen Bank between 2001 and From 2005 to September 2010 he worked as an independent investment adviser. Between September 2010 and November 2011 he held the position of Chief Executive Officer of the Government Debt Management Agency. From November 2011 he served as State Secretary for tax and financial affairs at the Ministry for National Economy. In March 2013 he was appointed a Member of the Monetary Council of the Magyar Nemzeti Bank. In addition to his office responsibilities, he has discharged a number of functions, the most notable of which are: Member of the Board and several committees of the International Securities Market Association (ISMA) headquartered in Zurich and London ( ); Permanent Member of the Regional Consultative Group of the Financial Stability Board headquartered in Basel ( ); Deputy Governor of the World Bank and the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD), and he is a Freeman of the City of London.
