1 Foothills Quilters Guild Newsletter United We Stand February 2014 Message from Our President United We Stitch I heard we had a great program in January - what a nice way to kick off the new year. Sorry I missed it, but I was doing the "Vegas, Baby" thing with Celine Dion, Tim McGraw and Faith Hill! Actually I was in Las Vegas last month to attend a meeting hosted by one of my hearing aid manufacturers. I was fortunate to hear several inspiring speakers, including former presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush. I always find it interesting that I can take the information, which is supposed to benefit my business, and apply it to my experiences with our guild. This was especially true with one speaker in particular. Author, Simon Sinek, spoke about basic chemicals, such as dopamine, serotonin and oxytocin which are produced in our brains. These chemicals drive human behavior and can inspire us as we pursue various tasks, or in our case, as we pursue our passion for quilting. When we have the feeling of accomplishing something, dopamine is being released. We get little shots of it as we get things done which make us feel good as we make progress in our efforts. Seem familiar? Serotonin is the pride chemical. It is released when we receive any type of recognition or boosts of selfconfidence. It is also released because we are sharing our experiences. Lots of serotonin is produced during show & tell for sure! Finally, there s oxytocin. You know that feeling we get when we are just hanging with friends or other people that share our interests - that feeling comes from oxytocin. And it increases when we either perform an act of human kindness or generosity or if we witness the act. It just makes us feel good when we do good, or if we see someone do good, it makes us want to do good. WOW! Oxytocin is abundant from our donation quilts and other contributions to local abuse prevention groups. Oh yeah, I really did get to see Celine, Tim and Faith. I even got to shake Faith Hill s hand! And they say what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas. Kay Do you Know: Place fat quarters of fabric in a mesh lingerie bag to launder. Wash your fabric with other clothing items without losing the fabric and with minimal fraying. Foothills Quilters Guild PO Box 3052 Shelby, NC Page 1
2 February Meeting Thursday, February 20th 7:00PM Ascension Lutheran Church Shelby, NC Program: Judy Lea Webber "This program is a survey of the latest in embellishments for quilts, handbags, wearable art, etc. and is designed to take the fear out of embellishing your projects. Even if you never want to use embellishments, you will at least have an idea of what other quilters are talking about when they mention them. Part I covers the use of paints, inks and dyes on fabric. Part II covers the use of transfer artist papers, Lutrador sheets, and other artist materials. Part III covers the use of fibers, roving, yarns, beads, silk and metallic threads. Judy will bring a number of these items for sale as well as lots of bright fabrics, books and magazines if you want to do some shopping. Judy is the founder and owner of Judy Lea's Quilt Studio in Concord, NC. She has been sewing most of her life and quilting for more than 20 years. Judy went to art school in California where she studied color theory and two dimensional design. She is a Certified Sulky Instructor. Prior to Judy Lea's Quilt Studio, Judy was the owner of a stained glass studio in Southern California." 4 FOOTHILLS QUILTERS GUILD January 16, 2014 Minutes The regular meeting of the Foothills Quilters Guild was held on January 16, 2014 at Ascension Lutheran Church, Shelby, NC. Vice President Paula Barringer presided in the absence of President Kay Young. Visitors were welcomed. Condolences were expressed for the passing of our member Bea Boyd. The prayer list was revised to include Miriam Glenn, Carolyn Sipes son-in-law Wayne, Carolyn Sipes dog Bullet, Linda Harrison, Linda Davis parents, Linda Green, Sally Norman, Suzy Bridges mother, Ingalill Jarls son. Good news that Mary Henry and Rita Fowler are back at work and removed from the list. The December minutes were approved as written in the Newsletter. OLD BUSINESS: Brenda Arrowood reminded the guild to bring to the March meeting papers products for the women s shelter, ideas for the donation quilts, and the finished donation quilts. A handout was given to the members present that reads: Be a participant in our March Program!!! Bring your favorite quilt or quilt pattern that uses 2 1/2 strips. Or a top in progress that concentrates on 2 1/2 strips. We will share these ideas. Ultimately our goal is to create charity quilts, but we will learn design and color tips from each other in the process. NEW BUSINESS: The guild board will meet before the March meeting at 6:00 pm. SHOW AND TELL Participants were: Lueva Drake, Sheila Tate, Nellie Harrell, Eleanor Morgan, and Betty Bridges. PROGRAM: Eileen Williams and her Journey As An Art Quilter story, gave the quilters present plenty to think about. With her major inspiration coming from the beauty of Coastal North Carolina, her work graciously exhibits her life there. Photographs of the many different scenes and objects of nature preserve the images she loves. They wait until she can begin creating the quilt that tells her story about each. Her techniques exceptional. Her embellishments give each piece it s special look. She gave her audience a gift of inspiration and the means to a wonderful end. DOOR PRIZES: Donated by Brenda Arrowood and Sandy Thomas Meeting adjourned Molly Savage - Recording Secretary Brenda also announced that Georgia Bonesteel had donated a basket of fabric perfect for fat quarter tote bags, (or anything else you might want to use it for) Ann Hutchins announced that the auction of old quilts will take place at a time when it is most likely to be a success. To be announced. Foothills Quilters Guild PO Box 3052 Shelby, NC Page 4
