OFFICE OF TEXTILES AND APPAREL Three Pillars of OTEXA 1. Free Trade Agreement Nego:a:on 2. Free Trade Agreement Implementa:on 3. Tex:le and Apparel Trade Facilita:on
TRANS- PACIFIC PARTNERSHIP A Free Trade Agreement for the 21 st Century that Promotes Jobs and Sourcing Opportuni:es Regional free trade agreement between 12 Pacific- rim na:ons represen:ng 40% of world GDP Establishes rules governing intellectual property rights, environmental protec:ons, labor standards, and state- owned enterprises
TRANS- PACIFIC PARTNERSHIP The Tex:les Chapter! Duty Savings: all products origina:ng in the region will see either the duty eliminated immediately or an immediate duty cut followed by complete duty elimina:on phased- out.! Rules Flexibili3es: the agreement will feature a short supply list allowing importers to source listed items from outside the region.
How do you make a fabric comfortable but func5onal and smart?
The Missing Link - Stretchable Electronics Seamless Integra5on of Sensors into Clothing Provides Real Time Biometric Data Previously the technology did not exist to bring smart clothing to the market that was func:onal and comfortable. The missing link was stretchable electronics. DuPont stretchable electronic inks enable a manufacturing- ready solu:on for smart clothing that feels like normal clothing. Our vision is that in 5 years smart clothing will be ubiquitous. Shirt developed in cooperation with Maxim Integrated Copyright DuPont 2015
SMART FABRICS Three general ques:ons we sought to answer 1. MARKET: Is the market for smart fabrics products real? 2. TECHNOLOGY: What are the technical barriers that need to be overcome to get there? 3. POLICY: When we get there, what public issues will need to be addressed and in order for us to get there faster, what public policies could be implemented to encourage the design of these products by US companies and the manufacture in the US?
SMART FABRICS! MARKET: Is the market for smart fabrics products real?! A mayer of when not if! But, why! Broad Applica:ons: Fitness, Health, Defense, Public Safety! Independent forecasts! Trac:ca (March 2015): worldwide revenue from smart clothing will grow to $603 million by 2020! Gartner (Nov 2014): smart clothing has fastest growth poten:al in wearables market! Public Announcements of Private Sector Investments in Smart Fabrics! Adidas: micoach system trains German World Cup team (global athle:c brand in global compe::on yields global awareness)! Ralph Lauren: smart shirt debuts at US open (global apparel brand moving into athle:cs monitoring)! Dupont: announces printable electronics for wearables (seeking alterna:ve methods to get to smart fabrics)! Target: debuts Open House for mass market retail channel (bringing home sensor products to consumers)! Google and Levi s: Project Jacquard successfully develops conduc:ve yarn compa:ble with exis:ng machinery (crea:on of new plaiorm for sojware innova:on)
SMART FABRICS! Technology: What are the technical barriers that need to be overcome to get to more widespread adop:on?! Washability! Conduc:vity! Power
SMART FABRICS! POLICY: What issues will need to be addressed to get to more widespread adop:on, and what policies could be implemented to encourage design by US companies and manufacture in the US?! Data Ownership, Privacy, Security! Performance Standards! Federal Research & Development Investment! Na:onal Science Founda:on: ASSIST Center! Department of Homeland Security: EMERGE! Accelerator Program! Department of Defense: Revolu:onary Fiber and Tex:les Manufacturing Innova:on Ins:tute
REVOLUTIONARY FIBER AND TEXTILES INSTITUTE MANUFACTURING INNOVATION INSTITUTE (RFT- IMI) Objec:ve! Serve as a public- private partnership between government, academia, and industry to address manufacturing challenges from design to end products! Support end- to- end innova:on ecosystem in the US for revolu:onary fiber and tex:les manufacturing! Provide rapid product realiza:on opportuni:es based on robust design and simula:on tools, pilot produc:on facili:es, and workforce development training! $75 million federal investment + $75 million private sector match
