In 1982 it changes name and legal status to Porfido Trentino S.r.l.. In 1988 progress is made through the introduction of a laboratory specialized in natural stone processing. In this way the production of split materials is integrated with the production of new fascinating materials with cut or sawn edges. Porfido Trentino S.r.l is situated at Albiano in locality Possender, in the middle of the so-called Alto Adige s porphyry platform. It can boast a very large variety of porphyry products such as cubes, irregular slabs, tiles with split sides, besides the other more sophisticated materials such as the steps to stone stairs, or slabs with polished and flamed surface which are specially indicated for indoor floorings and coverings. Porfido Trentino S.r.l. is a modern company that has furthermore succeded in blending tradition to innovation, by comparing itself to the secular human experience in mining and by taking advantage of this learning. THE PRODUCTION

Porphyry is a volcanic rock which takes its origin from the so-called Porphyric Atesina platform. Albiano, in particular, is the home in every sense of this rock known as porphyry.

Porphyry is extracted from an ignimbrite unit called rhyolite. The cultivable thickness of a typical unit is between 100 and 200 metres.

On the grounds of its chemical composition (more than 70% of silicon oxide, about 14% of aluminium oxide, 8% of alkali, beside some percentage of iron, calcium and magnesium oxide), its mineralogical

Actually, porphyry stones are obtained from the ignimbrites. They are the result of an intense volcanic activity with alternate eruptive and stable phases started 260 million of years ago. Porphyry is extracted from an ignimbrite unit called rhyolite. The cultivable thickness of a typical unit is between 100 and 200 metres. The main feature of porphyry is that among the natural stones it is the only one that by nature has a quarry natural surface. On the grounds of its chemical composition (more than 70% of silicon oxide, about 14% of aluminium oxide, 8% of alkali, beside some percentage of iron, calcium and magnesium oxide), its mineralogical composition (quartz, sanidine and plagioclase, and some biotite and vitreous material) and its porphyric structure we get the technical characteristics of this special rock, which make porphyry one of the most important materials for paving and covering. In addition, thanks to the high resistance to compression, to deformation, to the chemical agents and to abrasion and thanks to its versatility, its excellent physical and mechanical properties and its wide range of colours porphyry can be used for the most diverse applications. Even in special complex architectural projects, it always guarantees amazing results. 6 THE PRODUCTION Porfido Trentino S.r.l. has the concession to quarry and work one of the excavation lot in the area called Monte Gaggio at Albiano. The activity of extraction is carried out in the open on a kind of big large steps between 15 and 30 metres high. As usual the material is detached from the quarry face by means of mines and large metal punchers mounted on the mechanical shovels. Subsequently the porphyry pulled down is taken to special squares where it is sorted more carefully. The larger blocks are split with the help of pneumatic hammers mounted on excavators or mechanical shovels and reduced consequently to smaller dimensions in order to be sorted by the workers. Actually the labourers obtain slabs of different sizes and thicknesses simply by following the natural crack of the rock with mallets and wedges. Afterwards they separate the slabs on the basis of quality, thickness, dimension and sometimes colour. From the thinner slabs we can get tiles and irregular-shaped tiles, from the middle size ones cubes and from the thicker ones kerbs, small blocks, steps, etc.

The stairs can be made whether with quarry natural surfaced treads and risers or with worked surface treads and risers, this is to say flamed, polished or smoothed. The treads with quarry natural surface seldom have uniform thicknesses, since they derive from stratified quarry blocks split along their natural flaking planes. That s why the visible sides have to be calibrated on the required thickness (3, 4 or 5 cm) for a standard depth of 6 cm. Then the sides in view can be worked as one likes, this is to say split, simply gleaned, flamed, rounded, etc. On the other hand the not visible sides remain sawn. The treads with worked surface come from compact blocks of rather large dimensions that are cut into slices by means of special machines. In this way we get slabs with the desired thickness which need no calibration, but the surface has to be worked. It can be made flamed, smoothed, polished, etc. The sides in view can be worked in the different processing mentioned above, while the other ones are just sawn. The quarry natural surfaced wall-coverings are divided in two categories: coverings with split sides and coverings with sawn sides. The wall-coverings having split sides undergo the same working process as the split tiles, but their thickness is more regular. The length is free and the width can be chosen among the following sizes 15, 20, 25, 30 and 35 cm. This type of coverings are rather simply and rural elements suitable above all for gardens. The wall-coverings with sawn sides are made in the same way as the treads with the difference that the second long side will be calibrated on the desired thickness and worked as one likes, too. On the contrary of the wall-coverings with split sides the sawn coverings can be produced with the wished length. The covering is called cappello ( hat ) in the case all the sides need to be worked since they are in view, as for example when it is put on a pillar.
