10 DELIVERY DATES At Harring Doors we try our best to meet the delivery requirements of the customer. We are constantly reviewing and updating our procedures and methods to speed up the delivery of our products. However, the production of a high quality custom product does require time. When the original quotation is made we estimate the approximate time for delivery of the product based on our production planning at the time of quote. This is our best estimate of the elapsed time in weeks that it will take to produce an order based on the quotation given. Significant changes to the quantity or details can obviously affect this time. At the time of Order Confirmation we give a projected delivery date of the order. This date is based on the receipt of the appropriate information and approvals. Any delays in the receipt of the information, which makes up a Factory Ready Order will of a necessity be added to the projected delivery date. DELIVERY AND SHIPPING Because we ship mainly on our own trucks or by carriers contracted by us, we can ensure that product is delivered in prime condition and under conditions which suit the customer requirements. In order for us to effectively do this we require the following in writing with the order: a detailed ship to address with directions if required site contact & phone/fax number any special conditions such as time of day acceptance information of any conditions which would inhibit the delivery by large truck We ask that our customers facilitate the delivery by ensuring that proper equipment such as a forklift is on hand to unload the product. Unreasonable delays in off loading may result in added delivery charges. If a ship to address is changed after the order is received, we will require a written notice one week prior to shipping, of the new address. This could result in an additional freight charge if the destination is significantly different. POLICIES - 9

16 NATURAL CHARACTERISTICS OF WOOD BARK POCKET: A bark-filled blemish in the board. BURL: A burl is a swirl or twist in the grain of the wood that usually occurs near a knot but does not contain a knot. CHECK: A lengthwise separation of the wood that usually extends across the rings of annual growth and commonly results from stresses set up in wood during seasoning. COMPATIBLE FOR COLOR AND/OR GRAIN: Although compatibility is subjective, this phrase means that lighter than average color members will not be adjacent to darker than average color members. Two adjacent members shall not be widely dissimilar in grain, character and figure. (The application of finish will change the color of wood and wood products, and not always consistently from piece to piece.) HONEYCOMB: A cellular separation that occurs in the interior of a piece of wood, usually along the wood rays. MINERAL STREAK: An olive to greenish black or brown discoloration of undetermined cause in hardwoods. PIN KNOT: A knot that does not exceed 1/8 in average diameter. SAPWOOD: The living wood of pale color near the outside of the log. SHAKE: A separation along the grain, the greater part of which occurs between the rings of annual growth. SOUND KNOT: A knot that is solid across its face, as hard as the surrounding wood, and shows no indication of decay. SPLIT: A lengthwise separation of the wood, due to the tearing apart of wood cells. WELL MATCHED FOR COLOR AND/OR GRAIN: Like compatible above, this phrase is also subjective. Wood members are selected so that the color of adjacent members is similar and nearly uniform in appearance. The grain figure or other natural character markings shall be similar in character and appearance. Members with only flat grain should not be permitted adjacent to members with only vertical grain. Members with mixed grain are only permitted adjacent to members with similar grain in the adjacent edge. SPECIES 2

17 GLUING FOR THICKNESS For responsible utilization of natural resources, gluing for thickness is permitted at the option of the woodworker, as follows: 1. HARDWOODS: Hardwoods may be glued for thickness exceeding 1 1/16 2. SOFTWOODS: Softwoods may be glued for thickness exceeding 1 ½ 3. ADHESIVES: When intended for exterior use, Type 1 glues must be used. Otherwise, adhesives are the option of the woodworker. 4. MATCH FOR GLUED PIECES INTENDED ONLY FOR TRANSPARENT FINISH: Grade I - Pieces shall be well matched for color and grain. Grade II - Pieces shall be compatible for color and grain. Grade III - No matching for color or grain required. GLUING FOR WIDTH For responsible utilization of natural resources, gluing for width is permitted at the option of the woodworker as follows: 1. HARDWOODS: Rift sawn White and Red Oak, quarter sawn White and Red Oak, select Red and select White Birch, select White Ash, Cherry, and Walnut may be glued for width exceeding 4 ¼. All other hardwoods may be glued for width exceeding SOFTWOODS : May be glued for width exceeding 7 ¼. ADHESIVES : When intended for exterior use, Type I glue must be used. Otherwise, adhesives are at the option of the woodworker. 4. MATCH FOR GLUED PIECES INTENDED ONLY FOR TRANSPARENT FINISH : Grade I Pieces shall be well matched for color and grain. Grade II Pieces shall be compatible for color and grain. Grade III No matching for color or grain required. SPECIES 3

20 BOOK MATCHING The most commonly used match in the industry. Every other piece of veneer is turned over so adjacent pieces (leaves) are opened like pages of a book. Visual Effect Veneer joints match, creating a symmetrical pattern. Yields maximum continuity of grain. When sequenced panels are specified, prominent characteristics will ascend or descend across the match as the leaves progress from panel to panel. NOTE: May be used with plain, quarter, or rift sliced veneers. Because the tight and loose faces alternate in adjacent leaves, they reflect light and accept stain differently, and this may yield a noticeable color variation in some species or flitches. Commonly known as barber poling. SLIP MATCHING Often used with quarter sliced and rift sliced veneers. Adjoining leaves are placed (slipped out) in sequence without turning, resulting in all the same face sides being exposed. This also eliminates chance of barber poling. Visual Effect Grain figure repeats but joints do not show grain match. NOTE: The lack of grain match at the joints can be desirable. The relatively straight grain patterns of quartered and rift veneers generally produce pleasing results and uniformity of color because all faces have the same light refraction. RANDOM MATCHING Veneer leaves are placed next to each other in a random order and orientation, producing a board-by-board effect in many species. Visual Effect Casual or rustic appearance, as though individual boards from a random pile were applied to the product. Conscious effort is made to mismatch grain at joints. NOTE: Degrees of contrast and variation may change from panel to panel. This match is more difficult to obtain, when looking for uniformity than, Book or Slip Match, and must be clearly specified and detailed. SPECIES 6

21 RUNNING MATCH Remainders Remainders Each panel face is assembled from as many veneer leaves as necessary. This often results in a non-symmetrical appearance, with some veneer leaves of unequal width. Often the most economical method at the expense of aesthetics, it is the standard for Custom Grade and must be specified for other Grades. Running matches are seldom sequenced and numbered for use as adjacent panels. Horizontal grain match or sequence cannot be expected. BALANCE MATCH Each panel face is assembled from veneer leaves of uniform width before edge trimming. Panels may contain an even or odd number of leaves, and distribution may change from panel to panel within a sequenced set. While this method is the standard for Premium Grade, it must be specified for other Grades, and it is the most common assembly method at moderate cost. BALANCE AND CENTER MATCH Each panel face is assembled from an even number of veneer leaves of uniform width before edge trimming. Thus, there is a veneer joint in the center of the panel, producing horizontal symmetry. A small amount of figure is lost in the process. Considered by some to be the most pleasing assembly at a modest increase in cost over Balance Match. SPECIES 7

27 HOW TO STORE, HANDLE, FINISH, INSTALL AND MAINTAIN WOOD DOORS STORAGE AND HANDLING 1. Store doors on a flat level surface, in a dry, well-ventilated building. Keep doors a minimum of 31/2 off floor. Maintain a protective covering that protects from moisture, direct sunlight and abuse, yet allows for air circulation. For storage beyond 5 days, doors must be sealed on all 6 sides with a non water based sealer or primer. 2. Doors shall not be subjected to extremes of heat, dry or humid conditions. Relative humidity should not be less than 25% or greater than 55%. 3. Do not install doors in buildings that have wet plaster or cement unless they have been properly finished. HVAC systems should be operating and balanced. 4. Handle doors with clean hands or while wearing clean gloves. When moving doors, lift and carry, do not drag on one another. FIELD FINISHING 1. Prior to finishing, insure that the building atmosphere is dried to a normal relative humidity, and that the doors have been allowed to equalize to a stable moisture content. 2. Wood is hygroscopic, and dimensionally influenced by changes within its surrounding environment. To assure uniform moisture exposure, and dimensional control, all surfaces must be finished equally. 3. Doors may not be ready for finishing when initially received. Before finishing, remove all handling marks, raised grain, scuffs, burnish and other undesirable blemishes by block sanding all surfaces in a horizontal position with a 150, 180 or 220 grit sandpaper. To avoid cross grain scratches, sand with the grain. APPENDIX II 4. Certain species particularly oak, contain chemicals which react unfavorably with certain finishes causing dark stain spots. Where possible, the species/finish combination should be tested prior to finishing the doors. Notify your finish supplier, or door supplier immediately if any undesirable reaction is noticed. Do not continue with the finishing until the problem is resolved. Harring Doors can not be held responsible for these reactions. 5. In order not to induce warpage, avoid dark stains or dark colored paints on door surfaces exposed directly to sunlight, the same consistency of finish must be applied on both sides of the door. 6. In order to prevent blemish magnification, avoid extremely dark stains on light colored wood species. 7. Water based sealer or prime coats should not be used. Water based top coats should only be used over surfaces that have been completely sealed with a non-water based sealer or primer. 8. A thinned coat of sanding sealer should be applied prior to staining, this will promote a uniform appearance and avoid sharp contrasts in color or a blotchy appearance. 9. All exposed wood surfaces must be sealed, including top and bottom rails, cutouts and hardware preps. 10. To achieve the desired results of color uniformity, finish build, gloss and reduce the frequency of refinishing, obtain and follow finish manufacturer s recommendations. 11. Be sure the door surface being finished is satisfactory in both smoothness and color after each coat. Allow adequate drying time between coats. Desired results are best achieved by following the finish manufacturer s recommendations. Do not finish door until a sample of the finish has been approved. 12. Exterior doors must have a continuous exterior finish on all sides, and in all cutouts. INSTALLATION 1. The utility or structural strength of the doors must not be impaired in fitting to the opening, in applying hardware, in preparing for lights, louvers, plant-ons or any other detailing. 2. Clearance between door edges and door frame shall be a minimum of 1/16 inch on the hinge edge, 1/8 inch on the latch edge and top rail. 3. All hardware locations, preparations for hardware, and methods of hardware attachment must be appropriate for the specific door construction. Templates for specific hardware preparation are available from hardware manufactures, W.D.M.A. ( N.W.W.D.A.), A.W.I., D.H.I. Pilot holes must be pre-drilled for all screws. 4. Apply the sealer, primer, or first coats of the required finish, on doors, immediately after fitting, cutting for hardware, etc., and before the installation of any hardware. 5. Doors and frames must be installed plumb, square and level. CLEANING AND TOUCH-UP 1. Inspect all wood doors prior to hanging them on the job. Repair noticeable marks or defects that may have occurred from improper storage and handling. 2. Field repairs and touch-ups are the responsibility of the installing contractor upon completion of initial installation. Field touch-up shall include the filling of exposed nail or screw holes, re-finishing of raw surfaces resulting from job fitting, repair of job inflicted scratches and mars, and final cleaning of finished surfaces. 3. When cleaning door surfaces, use a non-abrasive commercial cleaner designed for cleaning wood door or paneling surfaces, that do not leave a film residue that would build-up or affect the surface gloss of the door finish. ADJUSTMENT AND MAINTENANCE 1. Ensure that all doors swing freely and do not bind in their frame. Adjust the finish hardware for proper alignment, smooth operation and proper latching without necessary force or excessive clearance. 2. 44 GLASS OPTIONS The following glass is available as a standard for true divided lite doors and full lite doors. Please mark your choice clearly on your quotation request. If not stated, HARRING DOORS will quote ¼ clear, tempered glass for interior doors and 5/8 clear, tempered insulated glass for exterior doors. All tempered glass meets the requirements of ANSI Performance Specifications and Test Methods for Safety Glazing in Buildings. LAMINATED GLASS - This consists of two or more pieces of sheet, plate, or float glass bonded together by an intervening layer or layers of plastic material. It will crack or break under sufficient impact, but the pieces of glass tend to adhere to the plastic. If a hole is produced, the edges are likely to be less jagged than would be the case with ordinary annealed glass. Plastic material that is available is clear or white. Standard thickness available is ¼. TEMPERED GLASS - (Other terms such as heat treated glass, heat toughened glass, case hardened glass, and chemically tempered glass are used also.) This consists of a single piece of specially treated sheet, plate, or float glass possessing mechanical strength substantially higher than annealed glass. When broken at any point, the entire piece breaks into small pieces that have relatively dull edges as compared to those of broken pieces of ordinary annealed glass. HARRING DOORS standard thickness is ¼ however, other thicknesses are available. WIRE GLASS - This consists of a single piece of glass with a layer of meshed wire completely imbedded in the glass but not necessarily in the center of the glass. Standard thickness is ¼. INSUL GLASS - (Multiple Glazed Unit) This consists of two or more sheets of glazing material separated by an airspace or spaces and glazed in a common mounting. Our standard for insulated glass is 5/8 which consists of 3/16 clear, tempered glass, ¼ air space, plus 3/16 clear, tempered glass. If 1 insul glass is requested for 1 ¾ doors, raised moldings will be required to hold the glass in the door. BEVELLED GLASS - 5mm and ¼ tempered beveled glass is available as a standard option. The standard bevel will be 1. After ½ x ½ glass stop is applied, ½ of the bevel will show around all 4 sides. This bevel is on one side of the glass only.

45 GLASS OPTIONS - continued BEVELLED INSUL GLASS - consists of one piece of 3/16 clear, tempered glass, ¼ air space, plus one piece of 5M tempered, beveled glass. NOTE - the 1 bevel is on one side of one piece of glass only. After the ½ x ½ glass stop is applied, ½ of the bevel will show around all 4 sides. ACID ETCHED GLASS - ¼ tempered with acid etching on one side of glass to give a milky white appearance. A 1 clear bevel can be added to the acid etched side also. OTHER AVAILABLE OPTIONS - Low E Tinted - Bronze, Gray, Green, Bluegreen

Warp is any distortion in the door itself, and it does not refer to the door in relation to the frame or the jamb in which it is hung. Warp is measured by placing a straight edge or a taut string on the concave face and determining the maximum distance from the straight edge or string to the door face. The accompanying table and drawing illustrate the Standard and Test. 60 HOW TO MEASURE WARP Using a taut string or straight edge, measuring on the concave face of the door, diagonally, horizontally and vertically, ascertain the point of maximum distance between the taut string or straight edge. Here are some other points to look for when measuring: Door should be in open position (not latched) Do not measure warp in relationship to the frame Only when gap exceeds ¼ may door warp be claimed Often a door may not fit into the frame properly but it is not warped. In these cases, check the frame it should be set plumb and square and jambs should not be twisted or out of alignment. Action on any claim for warp may be deferred for up to one year after project completion to permit doors to acclimate to temperature and humidity conditions. MACHINE - 3
