Seat # Name a General examination rules: 1) Do not put your completed work anywhere that it can be seen. If any part of your work can be seen by others it will be confiscated and you will not be permitted to rework those problems. Place any pages of your work face down on your desk under your existing work, not on the floor next to you where it is visible.. 2) Please remove your hat. If it is part of your head, turn it around backwards. 3) If your work is not legible, or if I cannot follow your logic at a glance, it will receive no credit. This paper must be written to acceptable engineering standards for credit. Please take this seriously. 4) You can work on the front or back of this paper. Just note if any work is on the back. 5) You can use your own paper or paper supplied at the front of the room. 6) You should specify what you are doing every step of the way. If I can follow where you got your numbers from, you will likely receive partial credit should you go off track. 7) Write big and use lots of paper, leaving me room to grade your paper. If there is no room to tell you why points were deducted, I will only show you the point deduction and let you try and figure out why. 8) You must present your work in a linear fashion, i.e. state what you are doing and then write down all necessary calculations you used in determining your answer. Box your final answers. 9) Additional blank sheets are attached if needed.. I have read and understand all of the above instructions: (Initials) Ethical Standards: Upon accepting admission to Texas A&M University, a student immediately assumes a commitment to uphold the Honor Code, to accept responsibility for learning, and to follow the philosophy and rules of the Honor System. Students will be required to state their commitment on examinations, research papers, and other academic work. Ignorance of the rules does not exclude any member of the TAMU community from the requirements or the processes of the Honor System. "On my honor, as an Aggie, I have neither given nor received unauthorized aid on this exam." Signature of student Please do not open this exam until you are told to do so. 305Qf-17c

Problem 1) Draw the shear and bendingmoment diagram for the beam ADEFB and loading shown. Determine the maximum absolute value of the shear and of the bending moment.
Problem 2) The grain of a wooden member forms an angle of 15 with the vertical. For the state of stress shown, determine the in-plane shearing stress parallel to the grain.
Problem 3) A load P is applied to a 12 mm diameter steel rod supported as shown by an aluminum plate through which a 12-mm-diameter hole has been drilled. Ignore the slight clearance shown between the 12 mm hole and the 12mm rod. To prevent the bolt from shearing out of the head of the bolt, leaving a doughnut of steel on the floor, the shearing stress in the rod must not exceed 180 MPa. To keep the same kind of shearing failure from occurring in the aluminum plate its allowed shear stress must be kept below 70 MPa. Determine the maximum load P that can be applied to the rod.
Problem 4) A steel pipe of 400-mm outer diameter is fabricated from 10-mm thick plate by welding along a helix that forms an angle of 20 degrees with a plane perpendicular to the axis of the pipe. Knowing that a 300-kN axial force P is applied to the pipe, determine the normal stresses normal to the weld.
Problem 5) Link AB is to be made of a steel for which the ultimate normal stress is 65 ksi. Determine the cross-sectional area of AB for which the factor of safety will be Assume that the link will be adequately reinforced around the pins at A and B and that the main bar controls the design, i.e. ignore the holes in the ends of the member.
Problem 6) An axial centric force of magnitude P = 450 kn is applied to the composite block shown by means of a rigid end plate. Knowing that h = 10 mm, determine the normal stress in the brass core.

Problem 1) An axial load P is supported by a short W12x72 column of cross-sectional area A = 21.1 in 2 and is distributed to a concrete foundation through a square steel plate as shown. Knowing that the average normal stress in the column must not exceed 40 ksi and that the bearing stress on the concrete foundation must not exceed 4.0 ksi, determine the minimum side a of the plate that will provide the most economical and safe design.
Problem 2) A steel pipe of 600-mm outer diameter is fabricated from 5-mm thick plate by welding along a helix that forms an angle of 20 degrees with a plane perpendicular to the axis of the pipe. Knowing that a 600-kN axial force P is applied to the pipe, determine the shearing stresses tangential to the weld.
Problem 3) Link AB is to be made of a steel for which the ultimate normal stress is 32.5 ksi. Determine the cross-sectional area of AB for which the factor of safety will be Assume that the link will be adequately reinforced around the pins at A and B and that the main bar controls the design, i.e. ignore the holes in the ends of the member.
Problem 4) The allowable shearing stress is 15 ksi in the 1.5-in.- diameter steel rod AB and 8 ksi in the 1.8-in.-diameter brass rod BC. Neglecting the effect of stress concentrations, determine the largest torque that can be applied at A.
Problem 5) For the beam and loading shown, consider section n-n and determine the largest shearing stress in that section. Ignore the point a shown in the figure.
Problem 6) A compression member of effective length L consists of a solid 30-mm diameter rod. In order to reduce the weight of the member by 25%, the solid rod was drilled out as shown. Determine the percent reduction in the critical load made by this change.
