3 SUPERIOR QUALITY AND CONTINUOUS DEVELOPMENT - powered by KNUTH Success through individuality During his engineering studies Peter Ronge began building bicycles. Soon he focused on the production of bicycle carriers from high strength steel tubes (Tubus), later he added carriers made of high-strength aluminum (Racktime). Today, the company holds several patents in this field. Ronge explains the changing market: In the past, you had one standard carrier, today individuality and product individualization is vital. We develop 250 new carrier models per year. In addition, the company produces suitable bicycle baskets, panniers, and mudguards. In order to be independent and develop their products quickly the team uses versatile machines to produce its tools for samples and prototypes. WORLD LEADING MANUFACTURER, TUBUS CARRIER SYSTEMS, USES KNUTH MACHINE TOOLS FOR ITS DESIGN AND PRODUCTION The company was founded by Peter Ronge, and its brands Tubus and Racktime are the worldwide leading carrier systems for bicycles. While the production facilities are located in Asia, the prototypes and samples are developed at the company s headquarters in Muenster, Germany. The company utilizes 4 machining centers and additional precision machines by KNUTH Machine Tools, which make a crucial contribution in this respect. High level of commitment, superb service In 2011 Ronge invested in a Hydro-Jet 2010 made by KNUTH, the first machine KNUTH produced in-house. For private as well as business purchases I prefer to buy from local companies, explains Ronge. It took a visit to KNUTH in Wasbek and the personal contact with the team to convince Ronge to purchase machines by KNUTH. My first impression was: They never let you down. And that has been proven to be true, says Ronge. KNUTH technicians went above and beyond to overcome the initial difficulties with the Hydro-Jet. I can always rely on the statements made by the company, whether it involves machine tolerances or delivery dates. Meanwhile, the company has added an X.Mill 700 HS with mineral-casting frame, a ZNC EDM 250 sinker electric discharge machine, and a DEM 500 electric discharge machine and the water-jet cutting machine Hydro-Jet 2010 to its workshop in Muenster. In addition to the excellent price/performance ratio Ronge emphasizes another benefit of this cooperation: KNUTH offers comprehensive training sessions for users, tailored to the specific machines. As a result, we as users are more independent, and it gives us more flexibility. This allows us to develop settings for very complex tasks, that have not been done before. X.mill 700 HS with mineral-casting frame The X.mill 700 HS features a mineral-casting frame, and is the ideal solution for die construction. Mineral-casting reduces vibration 6 times faster than cast-iron (GG25) and up to 10 times faster than steel, thus ensuring exceptionally quiet operation. The X.mill is very robust and we use it constantly, says Ronge. Here we produce, among other things, prototypes made of aluminum, dies for simple injection molded parts, and complex, one-piece tools. Furthermore, we produce buckles for panniers, snap mechanisms for fastening systems, and electrodes for high-frequency welding for the manufacturer of the panniers. The intuitive and state-of-the-art Siemens 828D control with simulation functionality facilitates the swift change between various production tasks. The spindle with its rpm ensures maximal surface quality at smaller milling diameters, and the low spindle lead of the ball screw allows for exact dynamic feeds at short travels and load alterations. 4 MODULAR MANUFACTURING WITH CNC LATHES MADE BY KNUTH Modular, flexible, and automated HUMARD Automation SA, with its headquarters in Delémont, Switzerland, designs and builds highly flexible turnkey production lines. The small, compact modules come in various dimensions. They can be combined with each other as well as interposed between process units, such as presses, cutters and welding stations. And they can be linked with manual workstations, handling systems or robots. Modules or complete ranges can be quickly and easily adapted or reused for a new production line. During the intensive development process, HUMARD Automation SA adapts the product design to the requirements of the production process. We work with the customer to design and implement the entire process up to the delivery of a turnkey system, emphasizes Fabio Carabotti, project manager at HUMARD Automation SA. Furthermore, the company assumes responsibility for technical components, which it purchases from thoroughly vetted partners. Wanted: A fast and flexible CNC Lathe In 2016 the Swiss company was looking for a CNC lathe to be used in the manufacturing of an automated production line that was fully adaptable to the customer's special requirements. The bulk material - six different rotationally symmetric sheet metal parts with diameters up to 135 mm - is separated by a sorting station and forwarded to a special linear handling gantry. It feeds the blank to the lathe chuck, and in exchange takes a finished part using a complex dual gripper. After quality control, the finished component is handed over to the next station. Decisive criterion for the selection of the lathe: a total cycle time of just 7s, as this is critical to the productivity of the entire production line. KNUTH Machine Tools adapted its Numturn 320 box-way lathe to fulfill the special requirements of the Swiss manufacturer for the manufacture of an automated pump production line. Extensive customization The basic performance data of KNUTH S Numturn 320 box-way lathe were just as much of a factor as the ability and willingness of the German team in Wasbek to make modifications and jointly engineer the mechanics, electronics and controls. To ensure synchronization with the gantry loader, the lathe s hardware was extended and the PLC underwent extensive adaptations. The hydraulic vise was replaced with a pneumatic high precision chuck with a change time of only 2s, for a total cycle of 7s. With this high level of productivity and the reliability of the machine supplied by KNUTH, HUMARD Automation SA was able to fulfill the ambitious demands of its customer. Modifications to the machine were successful due to the fact that KNUTH employs superbly trained hardware and software specialists. In addition, the company benefits from its OEM partnership with Siemens and has extended access to their information and support. Premium Siemens drives and controls In 2013, the supplier of a major German automotive manufacturer presented highly specific requirements: A belt or stone finishing machine based on a robust CNC lathe with premium drives and controls from Siemens was requested as base machine for a sand or stone finisher. Furthermore, the machine had to accommodate workpieces with diameters up to 250 mm and feature a rigid support with enough space to install the finishing machine. There were only a few Numturn 420 SI Accuracy within one-thousandth of a millimeter The perfect finish of a component might consist of a certain roughness and corrugation to ensure reduced wear. For high-quality products, this method offers a final finish for a competitive edge, says Clemens Dudler, CEO of techno-finish. The company specializes in finishing of medium-sized and small components, like piston and push rods or gears. In its own technology center, the Swiss company develops and produces compact belt and stone finishing machines that are customized for specific tasks. Additionally, techno-finish provides comprehensive consultation services on suitable abrasives for suppliers and manufacturers in As specialist for reliable finishing and surfacing process technologies, techno-finish Industries GmbH provides solutions for complex finishing and grinding tasks. Using the Numturn 420 as base machine and in close cooperation with KNUTH, the Swiss company has already produced four versatile high-precision finishing machines for a customer in the automotive industry. the automotive industry or hydraulic, pneumatic and vacuum technology sectors. Customers from the EU, USA and Canada often need precise results within one-thousandth of a millimeter. In 90 % of the cases, belt finishing is the months left before the production started. KNUTH offered techno-finish an ideal solution with an excellent price/performance ratio. The Numturn 420 lathe met all size-related requirements and was modified to the customer s needs. Since we produce in cooperation with our Chinese sister company DIMA, we are not only a dealer but also a manufacturer and can equip machines with various additional components, like drives and controls, explains Hannes Andresen, Sales Manager for Switzerland and Austria at Knuth. Additionally, the open architecture of the Siemens control allowed integration into an automated production line. High flexibility and simultaneous machining With these drives, we can move the belt and stone finishing machines directly to various positions for use with different workpieces, says Andresen. Because of its size, the Numturn 420 can be used to simultaneously machine a workpiece with several belt grinders. The finishing machines are attached to the lathe at KNUTH s headquarters in Wasbeck near Hamburg where KNUTH engineers customize the PLC's programming to ensure quick and precise machining operations for belt or stone finishers. During the cooperation of both companies, the machine tool manufacturer also impressed with fast results. Within six months we were able to deliver two different custom machines to our customer... both featuring high quality at low cost, said Dudler. Customized adjustments In 2017, the automotive supplier ordered two more machines for the finishing of gears in cellular manufacturing. In order to ensure excellent finishing results at all times, the belt and stone grinders were equipped with an integrated continuous monitoring feature. In addition, the Numturn 420s were equipped with monitoring interfaces to ensure constantly accurate analyses. If the machine is to be integrated into an automated production line, necessary interfaces can easily be installed.
