RULES for SAFE OPERATION To help ensure safe operation, please take a moment to learn the how to operate the machine and understand its applications and limitations, as well as potential hazards. KMS Tools and Equipment disclaims any real or implied warranty and holds itself harmless for any injury that may result from the improper use of its equipment. Do not operate the band saw when tired, distracted or under the effects of drugs, alcohol or any medication that impairs reflexes or alertness. Ensure your working area is well lit and free of debris. Keep children and visitors at a safe distance when the band saw is in operation. Do not permit them to operate the band saw. Prevent unauthorized or unsupervised use by child proofing and tamper proofing your shop and all machinery with locks, master electrical switches and switch keys. Stay alert! Give your work your undivided attention. Even a momentary distraction can lead to serious injury. Fine particulate dust is a carcinogen that can be hazardous to health. Work in a well-ventilated area and whenever possible use a dust collector. Wear face, eye, ear, respiratory and body protection devices. Do not wear loose clothing, gloves, bracelets, necklaces or other jewelry while the band saw is in operation. Remove adjusting wrenches, tools and other clutter from the machine and the table surface before using the machine. Keep hands well away from the blade and all moving parts. Use a brush, not hands, to clear away chips and dust. Adjust and position upper and lower blade guides before cutting. Upper blade guide should be adjusted to approximately 1/8 above the material to be cut. Adjust blade tension and tracking before cutting. Saw teeth must point down toward the table. Be sure that the blade reaches full operating speed before starting your cut. Always use a clean, properly sharpened blade. Dirty or dull blades are unsafe and can lead to accidents. Hold material firmly against the table. Do not work on long stock without adequate support on the outfeed end of the table. If using a power feeder, stop the feeder before stopping the band saw. Do not push or force stock into the blade. The band saw will perform better and more safely when working at the rate for which it was designed. Avoid working from awkward or off balance positions. Do not overreach and keep both feet on floor. Keep guards in place and in working order. If a guard must be removed for maintenance or cleaning, properly reattach it before using the tool again. Never leave the machine unattended while it is running or with the power on. Never stand on machinery. Serious injury could result if the tool is tipped over or if the cutting tool is unintentionally contacted. Always disconnect the machine from the power source before servicing or changing accessories such as blades, or before performing any maintenance or cleaning, or if the machine will be left unattended. Ensure the switch is in the OFF position before plugging in the power cord. Make sure the tool is properly grounded. If equipped with a three-prong plug it should be used with a three-pole receptacle. Never remove the third prong. Do not use this band saw for other than its intended use. If used for other purposes, KMS Tools and Equipment disclaims any real or implied warranty and holds itself harmless for any injury that may result from that use. Use suitable workpiece support if the workpiece does not have a flat surface. 1

ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONS This saw is heavy. You will need the help of at least one other person or a hoist for the following steps! To limit the risk of serious injury or damage to the machine, any equipment used to lift this machine must have a rated capacity in excess of 224 lbs (102 kg)! LIFTING AND HANDLING THE MACHINE To limit the potential for damage in transport, this band saw is shipped from the factory bolted to its crate in a vertical position. With a forklift or hydraulic pallet jack, move the entire crate as close to the final installation location as possible, and then uncrate the saw and remove the four bolts that secure it to the crate. PLACING THE BAND SAW IN YOUR SHOP 4 This machine should be installed and operated on a solid, flat and stable floor that can support the weight of the band saw and the operator. Using the dimensions shown as a guideline, plan for placement within your shop that will allow the operator to work unencumbered and unobstructed by foot traffic (either passing shop visitors or other shop workers) or other tools or machinery. ESTABLISHING A SAFETY ZONE Shops with frequent visitors or multiple operators should establish a safety zone around machinery. A clearly defined safety zone on the floor around each machine can help avoid accidents that could cause injury to either the operator or the shop visitor. Mark out the safety zone with non-slip paint or tape. Take steps to ensure that all operators and shop visitors are aware that these areas are off limits whenever a machine is running. FIGURE 4: SAFETY ZONE CLEANING THE SAW The protective coating on the saw table prevents rust from forming during shipping and storage. Remove it with a rag dipped in environmentally friendly degreaser and dispose of the rag according to the degreaser manufacturer s safety recommendations. To clean the T-slots, push the rag through the slots with a screwdriver. If necessary, scrape the coating with a putty knife held flat to avoid scratching the surface and then clean with degreaser. Avoid rubbing the saw s painted surfaces. To prevent rust, apply a light coating of paste wax or use regular applications of any aftermarket surface protector or rust inhibitor. Do not connect the saw to the power source until instructed to do so! 4

ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONS Serious personal injury could occur if you connect the machine to the power source before you have completed the installation and assembly steps. DO NOT connect the machine to the power source until instructed to do so. ELECTRICAL REQUIREMENTS Before connecting the machine to the power source, verify that the voltage of your power supply corresponds with the voltage specified on the I.D. nameplate located on the back of the machine. A power source with greater voltage than needed can result in serious injury to the user as well as damage to the machine. If in doubt, contact a qualified electrician before connecting to the power source. This tool is for indoor use only. Do not expose to rain or use in wet or damp locations. For your convenience this band saw is shipped from the factory partially assembled and requires only minimal assembly and set up before being put into service. 9 ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONS CONNECTING THE BLOWER DEVICE This saw features a flexible blower tube that connects to the motor. You can use the tube to blow air over the blade while you work. This prevents sawdust from accumulating and allows the cutting line to remain visible. 17 To connect the blower tube to the motor, follow these steps: 1. Remove the three PHILLIPS HEAD SCREWS (A) located on the motor. Remove the MOTOR COVER (B). See Figure Pass the BLOWER TUBE (C) through the hole in the MOTOR COVER (B) and secure it onto the barb behind the MOTOR PROPELLER (D). See Figure Re-install and secure motor cover using the three PHILLIPS HEAD SCREWS (A) removed in Step 1. RIP FENCE AND RAIL This saw is equipped with a T-fence and guide rail system. Follow all assembly and adjustment instructions in the manual supplied in the box with the fence system. MITRE GAUGE The mitre gauge rides in the TABLE SLOT (E) to the right of the blade and can be set to ANY ANGLE UP TO 30 TO THE LEFT OR RIGHT (F). You can also use the mitre gauge to feed smaller workpieces through the blade. See Figure FIGURES 17 and 18: BLOWER TUBE INSTALLATION CORD HOOKS When the saw is not in use, wind the cord around the two provided CORD HOOKS (G). This keeps the cord off of the floor and out of harm s way. Attach the CORD HOOKS with two Phillips head bolts to the THREADED HOLES (H) on the back of the upper arm of the band saw. See Figure FIGURE 19: MITRE GAUGE 8 FIGURE 20: CORD HOOK INSTALLATION

BASIC ADJUSTMENTS CUTTING SPECIFICATIONS This band saw is supplied with a 3/8" wide general purpose blade, yet it can accommodate blades from 1/8" to 3/4" wide. Ideal blade length for this model is 93-1/2". The upper wheel height is adjustable to allow for blade tensioning, so the saw can accommodate a variation in blade length of plus or minus 1/2". 21 The maximum INBOARD CUTTING WIDTH (A) is 13-1/2". This is the space between the blade and body of the saw. See Figure 21. For cutting thicker stock or for resawing, the maximum CUTTING DEPTH (B) is 6". See Figure 21. The supplied dual-position ALUMINUM RIP FENCE (C) can be set to either tall or short to serve as a straightedge to guide the workpiece for longer rip cuts. The fence can be removed when not required, for example, when making curved cuts. BASIC ADJUSTMENTS AND CONTROLS FIGURE 21: BASIC OPERATIONS Ensure power switch is in the OFF position before connecting to a power source. CONNECTING TO A POWER SOURCE Begin by connecting the POWER CORD FROM THE MOTOR (D) to the INLET PLUG ON THE SWITCH (E). See Figure Uncoil the POWER CORD (F) and plug it into an appropriate outlet (refer to Electrical Requirements on page 5). POWER ON/OFF SWITCH WITH SAFETY KEY The saw is equipped with a simple rocker-style On/Off switch featuring a removable lock-out safety key to prevent FIGURE 22: CONNECTING TO A POWER SOURCE unauthorized use or unintentional start-up. Whenever the saw is not in use, remove the yellow safety key and store it in a safe place, out of the reach of children. To START the band saw, insert the safety key and pull the switch toward you. To STOP the band saw, push the red tab down. To avoid risk of shock or fire do not operate the unit with a damaged power cord or plug. Replace damaged cord or plug immediately. 9

BASIC ADJUSTMENTS To avoid injury, ensure the power switch is OFF and the power cord is unplugged before adjusting the band saw. ADJUSTING 90º TABLE STOP AND RE-ALIGNING THE ANGLE POINTER 23 To ensure accurate cuts, align the table so the angle pointer reads 0 when the table is set to 90, the default position. Begin by setting the table-stop bolt: 1. Loosen LOCK KNOBS (G). See Figure Place a COMBINATION SQUARE (B) flat on the TABLE (C) with the heel of the square flat against the SAW BLADE (A). See Figure Level the table until it is exactly 90 to the blade, then tighten LOCK KNOBS (G). FIGURE 23: TABLE ALIGNMENT 4. Adjust the height of the TABLE-STOP BOLT (D) until it touches the underside of the table. See Figure Turn the JAM NUT (E) until it meets the table tilt bracket. See Figure Loosen the LOCK KNOBS (G) and make sure the table is resting on the TABLE-STOP BOLT (D). 7. Check the square and make sure the table is still at 90 to the blade. If not, re-adjust the TABLE-STOP BOLT (D). With the table set to 90º and the stop bolt at the correct height, check that the TABLE-TILT ANGLE INDICATOR POINTER (F) on the front trunnion is set to 0. See Figure 25. FIGURE 24: TABLE-STOP BOLT To adjust the pointer, loosen the screw on the POINTER (F)and align the POINTER (F) to 0 on the scale. Then re-tighten the screw to secure the pointer in place. See Figure 25. You will now be able to accurately return the table to the 90º position automatically without further adjustments and scale reading for any angle other than 0º will also be accurate. 25 Never adjust the table angle while the band saw is running. Turn off power first. TILTING THE TABLE For bevel cutting, the band saw table tilts to any angle between 0 and 45 to the right. Refer to the table tilt angle indicator to set the table angle. 1. Loosen the two LOCK KNOBS (G). See Figure Tilt the table to the desired angle. 3. Tighten the LOCK KNOBS (G) to secure the table in position. 26 FIGURE 25: ANGLE POINTER FIGURE 26: TILTING THE TABLE 10

BASIC ADJUSTMENTS REMOVING AND INSTALLING THE BLADE This band saw is designed to handle several blade widths ranging from 1/8" to 3/8" for tight radius curves, and from 1/2" to 3/4" for larger radius curves and cutting thicker stock. ADJUSTING CLEARANCE When you install or remove a blade, or adjust tensioning or tracking, make sure you leave enough clearance between the blade and both upper and lower bearing assemblies. This clearance protects the blade. To move the upper and lower bearing assemblies, follow these steps: Start by moving the upper blade guides away from the blade. See Figure Loosen the two ALLEN BOLTS (A) with the 5 mm Allen key provided. 2. Slide the two blade guides along the elongated hole in the MOUNTING BRACKET (B), as far away as possible from the blade. 3. Tighten the two ALLEN BOLTS (A) to lock the blade guides in position. Next reposition the upper thrust bearing. 1. Loosen the UPPER THUMB SCREW (C). See Figure Use the MICRO ADJUST NUT (D) to move the UPPER THRUST BEARING (E) back. Ensure the bearing is behind the blade as far as possible. See Figure 28. Move the lower blade guides and thrust bearing away from the blade. See Figure Loosen the two ALLEN BOLTS (A) with the 5 mm Allen key provided FIGURES 27 and 28: UPPER BEARING ASSEMBLY FIGURE 29: LOWER BEARING ASSEMBLY 2. Slide the two blade guides along the elongated hole in the MOUNTING BRACKET (B), as far away as possible from the blade. 3. Tighten the two ALLEN BOLTS (A) to lock the blade guides in position. 4. Loosen the SET SCREW (F) with the 3 mm Allen key provided. 5. Manually move the LOWER THRUST BEARING (E) back as far as possible behind the blade. BLADE REMOVAL This saw is equipped with a BLADE TENSION QUICK-RELEASE LEVER (G). See Figure 30. To release tension, pull the lever to its vertical position (90º to the left). To add tension, return the lever to its horizontal position (0º degrees). Never force the lever beyond its vertical or horizontal positions. 30 To remove a blade, first check start by releasing tension. 1. Pull the TENSION LEVER (G) toward the left to release tension on the blade. You may need to also turn the TENSION KNOB (H) counter-clockwise to release enough tension to remove the blade. CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE. FIGURE 30: BLADE TENSION LEVER 11

BASIC ADJUSTMENTS BLADE REMOVAL (CONTINUED) 2. Remove the TABLE ALIGNMENT PIN (I) from the table slot and the TABLE INSERT (J) from the centre of the table. See Figures 31 and Remove the BLADE GUARD (L). Loosen the two PHILLIPS HEAD SCREWS (K) just enough so you can slide off the guard. See Figure Open the top and bottom wheel doors and bring the left hand side of the loose blade toward you and out of the left hand blade guard slot. WEAR GLOVES when handling the blade. See Figure 34. FIGURES 31, 32 and 33: BLADE REMOVAL and INSTALLATION With the blade perpendicular to the wheels, feed the blade through the table slot to remove it. See Figure 35. USE CAUTION! The saw blade is sharp! 6. Carefully hang the blade on a hook in a safe, dry place in your workshop. Do not coil it. It could pop open unexpectedly. If the blade is worn or damaged, dispose of it safely. To avoid injury, ensure the power switch is OFF and the power cord is unplugged before adjusting the band saw. BLADE INSTALLATION To install a blade, first turn off the saw and unplug the power cord. You may want to wear gloves when handling the blade. If you are installing a new blade, carefully remove the blade from its package. Hold it firmly with one hand as you remove the twist ties. Slowly separate the coils of the blade until it unravels into one hoop. Use caution. The blade could pop open unexpectedly. 1. See Figure With the blade perpendicular to the wheels, guide it through the table slot, then rotate the side of the blade nearest you back toward the left side of the wheels. 4. Feed the blade into the left blade guard and around the wheels. Make sure the blade teeth point forward and down. See Figure 36. Once the blade is properly installed. Follow the instructions on the next page to set blade tension FIGURE 34: BLADE REMOVAL FIGURE 35: BLADE REMOVAL FIGURE 36: BLADE INSTALLATION 12

BASIC ADJUSTMENTS To avoid injury, ensure the power switch is OFF and the power cord is unplugged before adjusting the band saw. BLADE TENSION Blade tension affects both the performance of your band saw and the service life of its blade. A properly tensioned blade lasts longer and is less likely to break prematurely. If the blade is too loose, it can drift while cutting. If the blade is too tight, it can have trouble making smaller radius cuts. 37 Generally, a more tension will deliver better results when using wider blades, re-sawing taller stock, making straight cuts or wide sweeping curves. When working with narrower blades, sawing shorter stock and making tighter curved cuts, less tension is usually ideal. ADJUSTING BLADE TENSION FIGURE 37: ADJUSTING BLADE TENSION The Magnum Industrial MI band saw features a BLADE TENSION SCALE (A), which you can use to reference ideal tension settings for various blade widths. It also has a quickrelease TENSION LEVER (B). See Figure To adjust blade tension, first turn off your saw and unplug the power cord. Make sure there is enough clearance between the blade and the bearing assemblies. (See page 11.) Then follow these steps: 1. Check the BLADE TENSION SCALE (A) to see that the tension level corresponds to the width of the blade on the saw. Engaging the TENSION LEVER (B) with an overtensioned blade could damage the mechanism. 2. Pull the TENSION LEVER (B) down. 3. Referring to the BLADE TENSION SCALE (A), set the blade tension according to the width of the blade. Adjust the tension by turning the BLADE TENSION KNOB (C). Turn clockwise to increase tension and counter-clockwise to decrease tension. 4. Press against the side of the blade to check the tension. Typically, the blade should flex between 1/4" and 3/8". See Figure Make a test cut on a scrap piece of wood and readjust the blade tension as needed. FIGURE 38: ADJUSTING BLADE TENSION When the band saw is ideal for periods longer than 24 hours, release the TENSION LEVER (B) to remove tension from the blade. This prevents the blade from forming to the wheels, which can weaken and damage the blade. 13

BASIC ADJUSTMENTS ADJUSTING BLADE TRACKING While it's nearly impossible to set a band saw blade to run perfectly true, you can adjust the tracking so the blade runs as close to centre as possible. If the blade tracks too close to the front, it could slip off while cutting. If the blade tracks to the rear of the wheel, it could damage the tire. Keep the blade at least 1/8" from the front edge. 39 To adjust the blade tracking, first turn off and unplug the saw. Then confirm that you have enough clearance between the blade and the upper and lower bearing assemblies. (See page 11.) 1. Open the upper wheel cover door then rotate the wheel slowly forward by hand. The blade should remain relatively centered as it turns. See Figure If the blade tracking needs to be adjusted, turn the TRACKING KNOB (A) on the rear of the saw. See Figure 40. Turn the TRACKING KNOB (A) clockwise to tilt the wheel back and move the blade from front to rear. Turn the TRACKING KNOB (A) counter-clockwise to tilts the top of the wheel to the front and moves the blade from the read to the front. Turn the knob in half-turn increments, check tracking and adjust again as needed. 40 FIGURE 39: ADJUSTING BLADE TRACKING FIGURE 40: BLADE TRACKING KNOB ADJUSTING BLADE GUARD The BLADE GUARD (B) adjusts to accommodate the height of the workpiece. To prevent the blade (which is flexible and which would not otherwise be supported) from slipping out of position during cutting, and to reduce risks of injuries, expose a minimum amount of blade. The blade guard should be set 1/8" to 1/4" above the workpiece to prevent the blade from flexing out of position or offline during cutting. See Figure 41. To adjust the height of the blade guard follow these steps: 1. Make sure the band saw is turned off and the power cord is disconnected from the power source Loosen the smaller LOCK KNOB (C). See Figure Move the blade guide assembly up or down by turning the ADJUSTMENT KNOB (D). Then re-tighten the LOCK KNOB (C). FIGURES 41, 42 and 43: BLADE GUARD ADJUSTMENT The DEPTH GAUGE (E) on the blade guard can be used as a reference but it is not intended for precise measurements. See Figure

BASIC ADJUSTMENTS MAGNUM INDUSTRIAL MI DELUXE 14 WOOD BAND SAW To avoid injury, ensure the power switch is OFF and the power cord is unplugged before adjusting the band saw. CHANGING SPEED SETTINGS The MI has two speed settings: 1,800 LFM (low) and 3,000 LFM (high) Low speed is ideal for cutting soft woods over 4" in height or hardwoods over 2" in height. High speed is best for cutting soft woods under 4" in height or hardwoods under 2" in height. FIGURES 44 and 45: CHANGING SPEED SETTINGS If wood starts to burn at high speed, stop and change to the lower speed setting. 46 To change the speed of your band saw, complete the following steps: 1. Turn off power and disconnect the saw from the power source. 2. Open the lower wheel cover door. 3. Locate the drive belt RATCHET LEVER (A) at the back of the saw just above the motor. Pull out the RATCHET LEVER (A) to release it. See Figure 44. Once you release the lever, the bolt can be turned clockwise or counterclockwise. An ORANGE BUTTON (B) appears when the RATCHET LEVER (A) is released. See Figure 45. To release tension on the drive belt, turn the bolt a few times counterclockwise and pivot the motor to the left by pulling up on the CAPACITOR COVER (C). See Figure 46. This loosens the belt enough to move it between pulley sets. 4. To set the band saw to low speed (1,800 LFM), place the belt on the front set of pulleys. See Figure FIGURE 46: CHANGING SPEED SETTINGS FIGURES 47 and 48: SPEED ADJUSTMENT 5. To set the band saw to the high speed (3,000 LFM) place the belt on the rear set of pulleys. See Figure Once the belt is in position, push down firmly on the motor CAPACITOR COVER (C) to tighten the belt, then turn the RATCHET LEVER (A) clockwise to secure the motor. 15

MAINTENANCE Always disconnect the machine from the power source before performing any lubrication or maintenance. PERIODIC MAINTENANCE and LUBRICATION 48 Lubrication Keep the RACK AND PINION (A) and BLADE TENSION ADJUSTMENT SCREW (B) well greased and free of dust and debris. Clean and remove dust, debris and old grease after every 10 to 15 hours of use. After cleaning, re-apply grease as needed. Use any all-purpose grease. The motor and all bearings are sealed and permanently lubricated. They require no further lubrication. No other part of this band saw needs lubrication. FIGURE 44: MAINTENANCE and LUBRICATION If any part is damaged, do not use the band saw. Replace any damaged part as soon as you notice the damage. PERIODIC MAINTENANCE Inspect and test the ON/OFF switch before each use. Do not operate the band saw with a damaged switch. Replace a damaged switch immediately. Periodically inspect the power cord, plug and the blade for damage. Keep the machine clean and free of sawdust. Frequently blow out or vacuum up the sawdust and wipe down the machine occasionally with a damp rag. Keep the band saw wheels and tires clean. Dirt and debris on the wheels can cause the blade to slip. Do not allow dirt, pitch or gum to build up on the table, blade, guide and thrust bearings. Clean as needed with gum and pitch remover. But do not immerse the bearings in gum and pitch remover. To prevent rust from forming on the unpainted cast iron of the table, and so that the wood slides easily while cutting, apply a light coating of paste wax or use regular applications of any aftermarket surface protector or rust inhibitor. To avoid eye injury from blowing debris, wear safety goggles when blowing out sawdust. 16
