34 PRN Railings (Early C19) House (C20) Listed, grade II Grid reference SU PRN name Roman settlement with Iron Age features 196; consists of N-S aligned double ditched trackway with conjoined rectilinear enclosures, all of Roman date. Some E-W ditches of Iron Age date to the W.Two phases of activity suggested. 1) In northern part of site, 3 ditches of?iron Age date were identified, with one possibly forming part of trackway reused in RB periods. Multi-phased RB settlement discovered, aligned N-S, covering an area of at least 600m x 110m, and consisting of series of rectilinear enlcosures lying immediately W of a trackway. Recovery of stone rubble from an infilled trackway ditch, togther with small amounts of painted wall plaster, and roof tile allue to presence nearby of high status Roman building. Discovery of a grave also suggests a possible cemetery in this area. Inhumation Trackway Rectilinear enclosure Ditch Ditch 800BC - 42AD PRN Grid reference SU PRN Name Middle Iron Age enclosures with small Early Iron Age activity 409; consists of 3 MIA subrectangular enclosures of probable domestic use; small EIA presence detected. 1) Group of three subrectangular enclosures, dated to MIA based on pottery found. Small quantity of early Roman pottery was foun in the upper fill of a re-cut of one enclosure ditch, but it has been interpreted as post occupation material. This site is one of few examples of small discrete subrectangular enclosures in the region. Although internal features were lacking, the presence of pottery and bone suggests a domestic function. Scarcity of external features is notable. Environmental samples, covering both

35 EIA and MIA, produced low concentrations of cereal remains, which may suggest that the heavy clay soils of the area did not encourage an intensificiation of agriculture form the MIA to LIA, a trend noted on the better soils of the gravel terraces to the N. Subrectangular enclosure 400BC - 101BC PRN Grid reference SU PRN 7600 Name Villa on Pound Croft Discovery of large collection of Roman material in a field on Pound Croft suggests villa; building foundations revealed by trenching. Further work by OUDCE students confirmed interpretation. (1) Resistivity survey by WDFC revealed 'platform' in area of finds concentration. Trial excavation in 1967 revealed 2 floors of limestone slabs and gravel, but no walls. footings revealed elsewhere; building was 75' [22.8m] long by 30' [9.1m] wide. Pit with C1 material sealed under one wall, conclusion that site was badly plough damaged. Thorough field survey afterward revealed that area investigated was area of greatest Roman finds. Pottery extended from C1-C4 and one Saxon sherd. No coins 3) Sherds of C2-3 RB coarse pottery, fragmentary ridge tile and pottery "grid-iron" were found by Mr White in ploughed ground about 1 1/4 mile from the village. 4) Analysis of previous work done on this site given. Main thrust of article is fieldwalking and geophysical work done by OUDCE students in area of villa. Reassessment of material from Wantage District Field Club fieldwalking and excavation done; results sugget building in N of same study area covered by 2006 fieldwalking and geophysical work done by OUDCE students. Material found by OUDCE includes much CBM as well as pottery. Geophysical results reveal N-S trackway, with villa on E (only 15m by 7m) and rectangular enclosures on W. 5) Survey of area found further IA and RB material near E Hanney, together with a trackway leading N towards Frilford. Only Trench 1 intercepted building foundations, presumed to be villa despite absence of mosaics, tessellated pavements or other materials associated with villas. Correlation between cropmarks and trenched features was good, but was offset by approx 5-6m, probably because of difficulties in plotting cropmarks in the large field which lacked fixed reference points. Designated as site 417 in the reservoir proposal. Trenching was done with the Roman trackway (C1-2)
