1 Knowledge Base Article Type: Instructions Mold Change, Quick Reference Guide, for Models, 22HF, 16HF, and 1600 Description: Instructions on How to Mold Change - Quick reference Guide. Instructions on how to change a mold. Tools needed, Mold and mold Head assembly removal and install, pallet feeder adjustment, spacer changes, strike-off plate and agitator grate change-out. WARNING Never work on, clean or service this unit, control panel or any machine or open or remove any protective cover, guard, grate, door, or maintenance panel until the power or energy sources has been turned off, locked out / tagged out, and all moving parts have come to a complete stop and or blocked to prevent movement. Machinery is dangerous avoid personal injury and or death by following manufacture, Local, and OHSA safety procedures. Contact Columbia Machine for safety decals, guards, horns and beacons.
2 MODEL 22/16/1600 BLOCK MACHINE MOLD CHANGE QUICK REFERENCE GUIDE TOOLS LIST: 1/2 Ratchet 1/2 Torque Wrench Assorted Socket Extensions 1/2 Drive Sockets: 3/4 std 15/16" deep socket 1-1/8" std 1-1/2" std 3/16" Hex Allen Wrench Soft Blow Hammer Pry Bar Qty 2 steel bars about 1" x 1" x 36" lg Qty 2 5/8"-11 eye bolts Safety Glasses Safety Lock-Out Lock Gloves DISCLAIMER: This quick reference guide is intended to be a quick reminder of the steps necessary to change a mold. Many safety notes, cautions, additional setup notes, and general information is omitted in order to keep the content to a minimum. It is required to read the entire equipment manual as well as viewing the instructional video before using this quick reference guide. 1 2
3 MOLD CHANGE WITH OR WITHOUT HEIGHT CHANGE STEP 1 REMOVE MOLD HEAD ASSEMBLY AND MOLD Close orifice ball valve. MOLD CHANGE WITH OR WITHOUT HEIGHT CHANGE Remove head assembly. Place pallet on top of mold box core bars. Lower compression beam so mold shoes are about 1/4-1/2" ( mm) above the pallet. Remove mold head bolts. Remove pallet from top of mold box. Install compression beam stops. Lower compression beam onto stops. Lower stripper beam Raise compression beam. Place clean pallet on the pallet table. Remove rear mold box nuts. 3 4
4 MOLD CHANGE WITH OR WITHOUT HEIGHT CHANGE MOLD CHANGE WITH HEIGHT CHANGE STEP 2 LOWER PALLET FEEDER Loosen front pallet feeder support clamps. COMPRESSION BEAM STOP Raise stripper beam. Remove front mold box nuts. Loosen rear pallet feeder clamp bolts. Lower stripper beam about 1" (25.4mm). Use a prybar to dislodge mold. Lower stripper beam half way or so. Turn pump off Carefully work mold out of machine with mold box resting on pallet table. Remove mold box & pallet from machine. If you will be lowering the pallet table, lower the pallet feeder at least as much as you are lowering the pallet table. If you will be raising the pallet table, skip to the next step. 5 6
5 Remove table hold down bolts. MOLD CHANGE WITH HEIGHT CHANGE STEP 3 CHANGE SPACERS MOLD CHANGE WITH HEIGHT CHANGE Lower stripper beam, beam will move down & the pallet table will be held up by support bars Change table spacers. Adjust height of stripper beam so that bottom of pallet table saddle is about 2" (50.8mm) above the pallet de-elevator. (Not shown) Place steel bars under the pallet table saddle so that the bars are supported by the pallet feeder and pallet de-elevator. Drop new table hold down bolts into place. (If needed) Install table hold down bolts, but do not tighten. Raise stripper beam so there is about 1/8" (3.2mm) gap between the top of the spacers and the bottom of the pallet table saddle. Raise stripper beam. Tighten table hold down bolts to 266 ft. lb. (361Nm) Remove bars. 7 8
6 MOLD CHANGE WITH HEIGHT CHANGE Change stripper beam spacers as needed. MOLD CHANGE WITH OR WITHOUT HEIGHT CHANGE STEP 4 INSTALL NEW MOLD Wipe off mold die support and mold hanger surface area before installing mold. Install a clean pallet on table Place new mold onto pallet table. Manually slide mold into position UNDER DIS SUPPORTS. Raise the stripper beam to seat mold against die supports. Mold box adjustment may be needed to align with die supports. Never run vibrator before the mold has been tightened to die supports. Install front mold box nuts. Change compression beam stop spacers as needed so shoes protrude through the bottom of the mold no more than 1/8" (3.2mm). 9 10
7 MOLD CHANGE WITH OR WITHOUT HEIGHT CHANGE Lower stripper beam to the down position. Install rear mold box nuts. Torque all mold box nuts to 240 ft.lb. (325Nm) MOLD CHANGE WITH OR WITHOUT HEIGHT CHANGE STEP 5 CHANGE STRIKE-OFF PLATE AND AGITATOR GRATE Move feed drawer about 3/4 of the way forward. Remove strike-off plate and agitator grate. Install new agitator grate
8 MOLD CHANGE WITH OR WITHOUT HEIGHT CHANGE Install and adjust new strike-off plate. MOLD CHANGE WITH OR WITHOUT HEIGHT CHANGE STEP 6 INSTALL NEW HEAD ASSEMBLY Place pallet on top of mold core bars. Position new head assembly on top of pallet. Remove compression beam stops. Lower compression beam to within 1/8" (3.2mm) from top of head assembly. Move feed drawer all of the way back. Install head bolts snug, but not tight. Raise compression beam. Remove pallet from top of mold
9 MOLD CHANGE WITH OR WITHOUT HEIGHT CHANGE Lower compression beam so shoes are in mold. MOLD CHANGE WITH HEIGHT CHANGE STEP 7 ADJUST PALLET FEEDER HEIGHT Close orifice ball valve Lower stripper to down position. Adjust height of pallet feeder so the pallet on the feeder is about 1/32" (.8mm) above the pallet being pushed onto the pallet table. Adjust position of head assembly so shoes clear liners with no rubs. Tighten head bolts. 200 ft lb (271Nm) Check shoe clearances again by cycling machine in slow a couple of times. Listening for rubs or clicks Open orifice ball valve. Check shoe clearances again by cycling machine in fast a couple of times. Tighten rear pallet feeder bolts. Don t over tighten top and bottom bolt
10 MOLD CHANGE WITH HEIGHT CHANGE Tighten front pallet feeder support clamps. MOLD CHANGE WITH HEIGHT CHANGE STEP 8 ADJUST RAMP AND FLAG Adjust compression head down proximity flag with compression beam rubber stops about 1" (25.4mm) above feedbox side plates. Open orifice ball valve. Adjust rotary valve ramp for stripper beam so cam follower is setting on tip of ramp at both ends of stroke as shown
