3 Replacing the Shell of the Powered F-3 Unit Start with the powered F-3 unit, the locomotive that has a motor and gears to drive the wheels. Removing the current shell 1. Turn the locomotive upside down and rotate the front truck (featuring the rounded pilot) all the way to one side. Remove the screw that was exposed above the truck on the bottom of the frame. This is the only screw that you need to remove. Refer to the Figure 1 for the location of this screw. 2. Slightly lift up the front of the shell. Pull the shell forward to remove the tabs at the rear of the shell from the slots in the frame. Note! Be sure to support both the frame and the shell. 4 Replacing the Shell of the Powered F-3 Unit Removing the current shell (continued) 3. Follow the wire from the metal antenna in the shell to the wire terminal in the frame. Refer to Figure 2 for wire terminal location. 4. Carefully unplug the top portion of the wire terminal. To do so, gently pull up on the top terminal. At this point, your shell shell is free from the frame. You are ready to install the replacement shell. Front of Locomotive Unplugging the wire terminal Figure 2. 5 Replacing the Shell of the Powered F-3 Unit Installing the replacement shell The replacement shell for the Powered F-3 unit features only one metal antenna strip with Note! one wire. 1. Join the top and bottom portions of the wire terminal. The top portion of the wire terminal is attached to the replacement shell, and the bottom part of the terminal is attached to the horizontal circuit board on the frame. Be sure to push the top and bottom portions of the terminal completely together. 2. Move the wires out of the way and insert the tabs at the rear of the shell into the slots in the frame. To do so, keep the front of the shell up at an angle while sliding the tabs backward into the slots. 3. Turn the locomotive upside down and replace the screw into the bottom of the frame. This screw is located above the front truck. Refer to Figure 1. Note! Hand-tighten the shell mount screw to avoid damaging the new shell. You have completed the shell swap for the non-powered unit. The next section will help you to replace the shell of the powered F-3 unit. 5

6 Replacing the Shell of the Non-Powered F-3 Unit Complete the shell swap with the non-powered F-3 unit, the locomotive that has no motor or gears to drive the wheels. Removing the current shell 1. Turn the locomotive upside down and rotate the front truck (featuring the rounded pilot) all the way to one side. Remove the screw that was exposed above the truck on the bottom of the frame. This is the only screw that you need to remove. Refer to Figure 1 for the location of this screw. 2. Slightly lift up the front of the shell. Pull the shell forward to remove the tabs at the rear of the shell from the slots in the frame. Note! Be sure to support both the frame and the shell. Several wires connect these two pieces. 3. Follow the wires from the speaker, metal antenna strip, and volume control to the white wire terminal on the frame. Refer to Figure 3 for the location of the wire terminal. 4. Carefully unplug the top portion of the wire terminal. To do so, gently pull up on the top portion of the terminal. Figure 3 illustrates the separation of the wire terminal. Caution! Be sure to pull on the top portion of the terminal and not the wires themselves. At this point, your shell is free from the frame. You are ready to install the replacement shell. 7 Replacing the Shell of the Non-Powered F-3 Unit Installing the replacement shell The replacement shell for the non-powered F-3 unit features a speaker, metal antenna Note! strip, and volume control knob all installed at the factory. 1. Join the top and bottom portions of the wire terminal. The top portion of the wire terminal is attached to the wires on the replacement shell, and the bottom part of the terminal is on the frame. Be sure to push the terminal completely together. 2. Move the wires out of the way and insert the tabs at the rear of the shell into the slots in the frame. To do so, keep the front of the shell up at an angle while sliding the tabs backward into the slots. 3. Carefully turn the locomotive upside down and replace the screw at the front of the frame. This screw is located above the front truck. Refer to Figure 1 for the location of this screw. Note! Hand-tighten the shell mount screw to avoid damaging the new shell. Congratulations! You have completed the shell swap. Take a few laps around your layout and show off your new Western Pacific heralds! 7

8 Limited Warranty/Lionel Service This Lionel product, including all mechanical and electrical components, moving parts, motors and structural components, except for light bulbs, is warranted to the original consumer-purchaser, for one year against original defects in materials or workmanship when purchased through an authorized Lionel merchant. This warranty does NOT cover normal wear and tear, light bulbs, defects appearing in the course of commercial use, or damage resulting from abuse or misuse of the product by the purchaser. Transfer of this product by the original consumer-purchaser to another person voids this warranty. Modification of this product voids this warranty. Any warranted product which is defective in original materials or workmanship and is delivered by the original consumer-purchaser to Lionel L.L.C. or an authorized Lionel L.L.C. Service Center, together with proof of original purchase will, at the option of Lionel L.L.C., be repaired or replaced, without charge for parts or labor. In the event the defective product cannot be repaired, and a replacement is not available, a refund of the original purchase price will be granted. Any products on which warranty service is sought must be sent freight or postage prepaid, as transportation and shipping charges are not covered by the warranty. In no event shall Lionel L.L.C. be liable for incidental or consequential damages. Some states do not allow the exclusion or limitation of incidental or consequential damages, so the above exclusion may not apply to you. This limited warranty gives you specific legal rights, and you may have other rights which vary from state to state. Instructions for Obtaining Service If service for this Lionel L.L.C. product is required, bring the item, along with your dated sales receipt and completed warranty information to the nearest Authorized Lionel Service Center. Your nearest Lionel Service Center can be found by calling Lionel, or by accessing our Website at If you prefer to send your product back to Lionel L.L.C. for repair in Michigan, you must first call or FAX , or write to Customer Service, P.O. Box 748, New Baltimore, MI , stating what the item is, when it was purchased and what seems to be the problem. You will be sent a return authorization letter and label to ensure your merchandise will be properly handled upon receipt. Once you have received your return authorization and label, make sure that the item is packed to prevent damage during shipping and handling. We suggest that you use the product s original packaging. This shipment must be prepaid and we recommend that it be insured. Please make sure you have followed all of the above instructions carefully before returning any merchandise for service. You may choose to have your product repaired by one of our Authorized Lionel Service Centers after its warranty has expired. A reasonable service fee will be charged.
