1 Fine Turnings Seattle Chapter, American Association of Woodturners July The July meeting will be the Annual Mini-Symposium. There will be multiple demonstration stations showing different woodturning techniques and jigs. John Shrader will demonstrate how to make metal tools using materials and tools most of us already have in our shops. Jack Wayne will demonstrate making goblets. Dan Johnson will use tools he makes for a deep hollowing demonstration. David Lutrick will make tops using several different tools, warming up to beat AJ and all other challengers in a speed contest at the end of the evening. Les Dawson will be coordinating the showing of jigs and fixtures used by members, including Burt s sphere turner, Phil s segment wedge cutter, and David s ceiling-mounted rotating rack for lathe tools. July Sawdust Session: Top Turning Frenzy July 15 Sawdust Session is a top-making marathon at AJ s shop. This is a chance to dedicate all or part of the day turning tops for the KIDSfair. Wood and lathe chucks will be provided. You must bring your own turning tools and a light if you need it. Sign-up Thursday night with your pledge of how many tops you ll make for the kids at the Bellevue Art Museum event. This is our last chance to make our 1200 tops goal for BAM. We had 24 people attend the 3 Hands-On Workshops and 55 people at the Saturday All Day demonstration. Visiting attendees came from most of the Western Washington clubs along with those who travelled from Eastern Washington, Oregon, British Columbia, and Idaho. Many commented on his ability to pass on information without being pretentious or fixed on one way of doing things. a brilliant presenter and teacher. Up there among the best I've seen (Jimmy Clewes, Stuart Batty, etc) Glenn's guidance was well balanced No dogma about having to follow one set route (see Glenn Lucas on page 4)
2 President s Message Glenn Lucas event was great success! For those of you that missed the all day on Saturday, Glenn presented a number of turning tricks that were not covered at the club meeting on Thursday night. The workshops were also satisfying for the people that took them; many techniques for sharpening and tool control were learned. I wish to thank all the club members that helped out make our 30th year, Glenn Lucas event, a great success! This month will be the mini symposium and timed top turning frenzy. Jack Wayne will be showing us how to make goblets, Vern Tator will be demonstrating jam chucks for larger boxes, John Shrader explains to us metal tools you can make at home, Dan Johnson shows deep hallowing skills, and Les Dawson will host a table of members jigs We now need tops for the kids fair in July at the Bellevue Arts Museum. Last year we were able to pre-turn 1000 tops and since we ran out again during the fair, this years goal is Jim Kief and I will have wood at the meeting for the tops. We have been keeping track in the club newsletter on how we are doing towards our goal. There will be a sign-up sheet for the demonstrators, hand lathe coloring and the other activities on July 28-30th. We need to get these spots filled at the meeting. PLEASE HELP OUT and SIGN UP! Our July Saw Dust Session will be Turning Top Frenzy. We are seriously short on tops so far this year and need to get more completed ahead of time to help the members that have volunteering their time at BAM. Bellevue Arts Museum is looking for 40 to 60 pieces of exceptional turned objects for display from early October to mid January. There will be more on this later. There have been discussions about having a booth at the Sept 16th and 17th Makers Fair at the EMP. Beads of Courage Boxes are always needed and we will need another batch to go shortly. The hospitals in the area need at least 30 boxes a year to keep up with the children going through cancer treatments. Be safe out there! Volunteers Needed Club Vice President Due to health issues Jose has stepped down as Vice President. If you are willing to step in and replace him for the remainder of his term contact a board member Assistant Editor/Co-Editor Newsletter We are in need of a person to assist with the monthly newsletter. Help compile articles, assist with layout, and identify additional content and eventually take over the newsletter. Page 2
3 Bellevue Arts Museum ARTSfair - July 28-30, 2017 Mark your calendars for the Bellevue Arts Museum ARTSfair - July 28-30, This is our biggest Community Outreach event each year. We turn tops for the KIDSfair and the kids line up to decorate them. Our goal is to turn enough tops in advance, so that the demonstrators can turn other small projects and engage with the parents and kids. We staff five demonstration stations at the fair: One gives out tops; One helps the kids coloring tops using hand-powered lathes; and three mini-lathes demonstrate turning (and make tops as needed). Several members bring their spouses, or children, so it can be a nice family outing. Plus you can tour the ARTSfair, that gets bigger every year. There will be a sign-up sheet at the April meeting, so get this date on your calendar! BAM website: Even if you can't attend the ARTSfair, you can help by making tops. Wood for tops will be available at each meeting, donated by Dusty Strings. Our goal is 1200 tops! Making Tops for KIDSfair Between 2 & 3 tall Handle of the top about ⅔ Body of the top about ⅓ Low center of gravity helps to spin better Handle s/b approx. ¼ to fit ⅜ chuck and straight to fit in hand-powered lathes for coloring Be creative and have fun!!! Woodturners at Bellevue Arts Festival July A number of woodturners will be exhibiting during the festival. Before or after your top making shift at BAM on July 28-30, be sure to visit the concurrent art fairs nearby. The turners that are exhibiting are listed below. Matthew Hatala s work is of special interest for its beauty, craftsmanship, and design. The shows include many more artists featuring wood sculpture and furniture. Excellent venue, not a bad seat in the house Many of the people attending the events had similar comments. the entire weekend was a learning experience on steroids worth the investment of my time and resources. I look forward to other such learning experiences Great! Absolutely terrific! the whole entire event was fantastic!
