4 CKCA Certification and Standards Nickels Cabinets has successfully completed and passed all requirements for materials and performance tests and has subsequently been awarded certification under the CKCA Construction and Material Testing Standard for Kitchen Cabinets and Vanities (January 2009). The CKCA Construction and Material Testing Standard for Kitchen Cabinets and Vanities was developed to establish a certification for Canadian made cabinetry that would be recognized by architects, designers, retailers, and regulatory authorities across Canada. The standards were developed by a technical committee of key stakeholders within the Canadian kitchen cabinet industry who were keenly aware of the need to build consumer confidence in Canadian made products through the promise of consistent quality. All testing is performed by a Standards Council of Canada recognized testing laboratory. Once testing is complete, results are sent to the CKCA Certification Program Office, where the CKCA will award certification based on the resulting report recommendations. Consumers can be confident that all products manufactured by a certified member either meet or exceed the stringent testing standards required for CKCA certification. 5 Warranty Terms and Conditions Changed! - Nickels Cabinets warrants that our products will be free from defects in materials and workmanship under normal use at the initial site of installation. This warranty is applicable to the original consumer purchaser for as long as they own their home and is non-transferable. - This limited warranty does not cover damage caused by exposure to moisture, exposure to extreme temperatures, acts of God, improper storage, handling, installation, misuse, abuse, neglect nor does it cover normal incidental deterioration such as nicks, scratches, abrasions and natural aging whether resulting from the effects of normal wear and tear or abnormal use. - Problems with wood due to temperature and humidity (as described below in the Wood Characteristics section) will not be covered by this warranty. - Any expense involved in removing, shipping, and reinstalling any items or products will not be covered by this warranty. - Nickels Cabinets reserves the option of approving field repair or returning the part to the factory for correction. - We will not assume, nor authorize any person to assume for us, any liability in connection with the sale of Nickels Cabinets products. - This warranty is in lieu of all other warranties expressed or implied. Wood Characteristics Wood has long been admired for its distinct and unique characteristics. All wood species undergo a gradual aging process that will enhance the texture, color, and grain patterns in the wood. The pronounced features of each wood species give a uniqueness and timeless appeal that can only be found in nature. These characteristics are particularly evident with our lighter stained finishes. While we make every effort to ensure that all of our finishes are consistent with our samples, variations in graining, knots, mineral deposits, and color are inherent in wood and are considered acceptable. According to the Architectural Woodwork Institute: Wood is a hygroscopic material, and under normal use conditions all wood products contain some moisture. Wood readily exchanges this molecular moisture with the water vapor in the surrounding atmosphere according to the existing relative humidity. In high humidity, wood picks up moisture and swells; in low humidity wood releases moisture and shrinks. As normal minor fluctuations in humidity occur, the resulting dimensional response in properly designed construction will be insignificant. To avoid problems, it is recommended that relative humidity be maintained within the range of 25-55%. Uncontrolled extremes - below 20% or above 80% relative humidity - can likely cause problems. Nickels takes great care to maintain an environment that falls within the acceptable range for wood products. As such, any problems that occur after the product has left our facility will not be covered by our warranty, but will become the responsibility of the storage company prior to installation, the general contractor during site storage and installation, or the homeowner after occupancy. general information 5

6 Cabinetry Care All cabinet materials, particularly finished wood and painted products, demand your care and attention. Caution must be taken to protect your cabinetry from extremes of temperature and exposure to moisture. Any prolonged exposure to moisture, whether liquid or steam, is likely to cause damage, so proper care is required in order to maintain the finish on your cabinetry. It is important to wipe off any excessive moisture when it occurs, particularly around the sink, stove, dishwasher, and shower areas where high humidity is typical. Such conditions can accelerate the natural expansion and contraction of the wood fibers that may cause irreparable damage and will void your warranty. Please be sure to maintain the relative humidity levels as recommended above. Cleaning solutions can also be a hazard. Although our finishes are resistant to normal household chemicals (as verified by our CKCA certification), excessive and prolonged exposure may cause a discolouration in the surface. Abrasives and furniture polishes should never be used, particularly those that are silicone-based and/or contain citric acid. For regular cleaning, we recommend wiping with a clean, soft cloth slightly dampened with a solution of mild detergent and warm water, followed by another wipe with a clean,dry soft cloth. Never use a dishcloth that is not clean as it may contain contaminants that could damage the cabinetry. It is important to wipe in the direction of the grain if you have a wood product. We do advise you allow a minimum of 30 days prior to cleaning with the cleaning solution to allow the surfaces to fully harden. With proper care you will get many years of enjoyment out of your cabinetry. general information 6

Cabinets - Cabinets are doweled, glued and case clamped to achieve strength and accuracy. - All cabinets are constructed using ⅝ backs that are dadoed into the cabinet sides to maintain squareness. - All center shelves are fully adjustable and held in place with a front hold-down clip. -shelves are ¾ easy clean melamine (white, maple, special color and texured) -face edges are finished using a matching edge tape - Gables are ⅝ melamine on a composite core with face edges that are finished with a matching edge tape. - Exposed end gables are a matching melamine, MDF or wood veneer either painted or stained, sealed and top-coated to match the doors. - Hinges are Blum clip-top BLUMOTION, 110 degree, 3-way adjustable, all metal, fully concealed, and are backed by Blum s lifetime guarantee. - All drawer hardware is by Blum and comes with a lifetime guarantee. 47 Materials Alder Black Walnut This is a straight-grained and evenly textured medium hardwood with a pleasing if not subdued figure. Color ranges from a pale pinkish/brown to a light tan and the wood accepts stain very consistently. Alder is an abundant and rapid growing tree, native to the Northwest region. Available with either a Clear or Knotty grade. Clear Alder exhibits the presence of occasional small, sound knots and some mineral streaks. Knotty Alder is truly characterized by its knots which range in size and character from tight and sound to split and open with a random distribution. Knotty Alder veneer is not available so Clear Alder veneer will be used when veneers are necessary, such as for center panels on a recessed panel door, finish panels, baseboards, etc. This hard timber of medium density is mostly straight grained, but with wavy or curly grain occasionally present. The beautiful grain character produces more figure variation than any other wood. Color is a rich dark brown to purplish-black which develops a lustrous patina with age. This is the only dark brown wood species that is native to North America. Cherry This fine textured hardwood has a prominent figure and beautiful, warm pinkish hue. Cherry will darken as it is exposed to light and will take on a rich patina that enhances the beauty of this wood species. Available with either a Clear or Knotty grade. Clear Cherry exhibits occasional pin holes, small black or brown gum spots, and some mineral flecks. Knotty Cherry is characterized by its knots and rustic appearance. The knots will be random in distribution, size and soundness and the wood will have more mineral flecks and grain variations than Clear Cherry. Knotty Cherry veneer is not available so Clear Cherry veneer will be used when veneers are necessary, such as for center panels on a recessed panel door, finish panels, baseboards, etc. materials & finishes 47

48 Fir This softwood is native to the Pacific Northwest. The heartwood is a light reddish-brown shade and displays a prominent growth ring figure. The wood is straight-grained with the occasional wavy or spiral grain and has a uniform medium texture. The Fir is graded according to ANSI standards and as such, must have a minimum of 6 annual rings per 1 inch (the annual rings show as vertical/horizontal grain lines). Available with both a Vertical Grain (VG) and Horizontal Grain (HG) option. Maple This is a strong, fine textured hardwood with a uniform grain and very subtle figure. The color is creamy white with a slight reddish brown tinge. Maple will exhibit random black to grey mineral streaks in addition to areas of burl, birdseye, quilting, and worm tracks. These characteristics are considered normal and part of what gives Maple its unique appeal. Quartersawn White Oak This straight grained hardwood is characterized by its tiger ray flake pattern and silver grain. QS White Oak ranges in color from pale yellow-brown to biscuit with a pinkish tint. The grain pattern and light color make this wood distinctly different from Red Oak. Available with both a Vertical Grain (VG) and Horizontal Grain (HG) option. materials & finishes 48

49 Plainsawn White Oak Straight grained hardwood, featuring an open grain pattern with variations in color and texture. Generally this wood has large flitch patterns and a highly visible cathedral grain look. Available with both a Vertical Grain (VG) and Horizontal Grain (HG) option. Painted Painted material is typically either a paint grade solid wood (like poplar or soft maple), MDF (CARB II compliant medium density fiberboard) or a combination of both. As well some doors are painted on high-density fiberboard (HDF) which is much stronger and harder because it is made out of exploded wood fibers that have been highly compressed. HDF differs from particle board in that the bonding of the wood fibers requires no additional materials and unlike particle board, it will not split or crack. This combination of materials provides a smooth and consistent finished surface. Nickels applies paint onto 1-piece HDF and 5-piece MDF/wood doors. When a 5-piece door is painted, the joints will inevitably telegraph through the painted finish. On some occasions, the joints will open up, thereby developing hairline cracks on the door face. These cracks are considered normal and acceptable, and are therefore not covered as a warranty issue. When Nickels paints onto 1-piece MDF doors, the issue of the joints as described above is eliminated. materials & finishes 49

50 Stain Standards The bare wood surfaces are carefully inspected and sanded to prepare the surface for staining. After the wood is stained, a sealer is applied to lock in the stain color. The product is then hand-sanded and finished with a non-yellowing, low HAPS, conversion varnish clear topcoat which provides a long-lasting, durable finish that will stand up against most household chemicals. The Clearcote finish (for EW Engineered Veneers only) follows the same process with the exception that no stain is applied to the bare wood surface. With the exception of EW Engineered Veneers, all wood species are available with the following stains: Ancho, Barley, Blue Corn, Cardamon, Chipotle, Cinnamon, Clove, Coffee Bean, Driftwood, Hazelnut, Nutmeg, Pasilla, Peppercorn, Rain, Sesame, Star Anise, Tamarind, Winter or with a custom stain (see below for more information on custom stain). Clearcote will not be available on our standard wood species. Ancho Barley Blue Corn Cardamon Chipotle Cinnamon Clove Coffee Bean Driftwood Hazelnut Nutmeg Pasilla Peppercorn Rain Sesame Star Anise Tamarind Winter Paint Standards The bare MDF, HDF or MDF/wood surfaces are carefully inspected and sanded to prepare the surface for painting. A base coat is applied to the surface and then hand-sanded. A second coat is applied and again hand-sanded. A final non-yellowing topcoat of two-part component catalyzed enamel paint is then applied. The resulting smooth surface provides a high performance finish that is resistant to spills, scratches and heat. All painted and wood species (with the exception of EW Engineered Veneers) are available with the following paint colors: Antique White, Black, Butter, Charcoal, Cloud White, Cream, Designer White, Flint, Frosty White, Pewter, Sand, Shale or custom paint (see below for more information on custom paint). 51 Engineered Veneer EW QC Cherry Engineered veneers are created to simulate a variety of engineered wood species. The result is a value-added and highly sustainable product offering with a unique and engineered wood appeal. 52 Melamine M White Decorative paper is impregnated with a melamine resin and then thermally fused to an industrial grade of composite core board. Thermal fusion takes place under heat and pressure and permanently bonds the resin impregnated paper to the substrate. The process of thermal fusion produces a permanent bond between the melamine surface and the substrate. Doors are limited to the Alpha VGM style along with limited molding options and other product limitations. 53 Textured Melamine Textured melamines offer the look and feel of wood grain while being durable and consistent in appearance. Doors are limited to the Alpha VGM style along with limited moulding options and other product limitations. 55 Finishes Nature s Standards Wood has long been admired for its distinct and unique characteristics. All wood species undergo a gradual aging process that will enhance the texture, color, and grain patterns in the wood. The pronounced features of each wood species give a uniqueness and timeless appeal that can only be found in nature. These characteristics are particularly evident with our lighter stained finishes. While we make every effort to ensure that all of our finishes are consistent with our samples, variations in graining, knots, mineral deposits, and color are inherent in wood and are considered acceptable. According to the Architectural Woodwork Institute, Wood is a hygroscopic material, and under normal use conditions all wood products contain some moisture. Wood readily exchanges this molecular moisture with the water vapor in the surrounding atmosphere according to the existing relative humidity. In high humidity, wood picks up moisture and swells; in low humidity wood releases moisture and shrinks. As normal minor fluctuations in humidity occur, the resulting dimensional response in properly designed construction will be insignificant. To avoid problems, it is recommended that relative humidity be maintained within the range of 25-55%. Uncontrolled extremes - below 20% or above 80% relative humidity - can likely cause problems. Nickels takes great care to maintain an environment that falls within the acceptable range for wood products. As such, any problems that occur after the product has left our facility will not be covered by our warranty, but will become the responsibility of the storage company prior to installation, the general contractor during site storage and installation, or the homeowner after occupancy. Sheen Standards All stained wood species and painted MDF, HDF or MDF/wood products have a topcoat sheen option of Matte (12 degree sheen) and Satin (35 degree sheen) or Eco-Matte (Zenith water-borne 20 degree sheen) or Eco- Satin (Zenith water-borne 40 degree sheen). Zenith Waterborne Conversion Varnish is a product of new-generation high performance coatings technology. ZENITH water-based finishes match the durability of solvent-based coatings, deliver improved mar and scratch resistance, are odor-free and non-yellowing. This formula is easy to apply and has outstanding flow and leveling characteristics, as well as exceptional clarity. It has been formulated with a proprietary blend of self-crosslinking acrylic and urethane resins to yield a high-solids finish that is extremely durable, has excellent household chemical resistance, and passes all KCMA performance requirements when properly applied and cured. Zenith Waterborne Conversion Varnish is low VOC, HAPS-free and contains no formaldehyde or isocyanate, so that you can be assured you are using a coating that is not only beautiful and durable, but reduces hazards to workers, consumers and the environment. There is about a 58% reduction of VOC s when using the Zenith topcoat options (Eco-Statin or Eco-Matte) instead of the standard topcoats (Satin or Matte). Due to the introduction of the Zenith topcoat to our Custom line, Nickels has terminated the Viridian line as it is now fully integrated into the Custom line. Be aware that there are no water-based stains or glazes available any longer (once available in Viridian) primarily due to the difficult nature of these products and the minimal VOC s that are released once these finishes are sealed with the final topcoats. materials & finishes 55

56 Special Finishes Glaze Options All stained wood species and painted MDF or MDF/wood products have an option of glaze being applied in either a Dragged or Shadow style (process described below). Glaze color options are as follows: Pearl, Linen, Beach, Fawn, Ochre, Cocoa, Espresso, Ebony A sample door with the glaze color and process is strongly recommended. Dragged Glaze The finished surface is scuffed with a 180 grit sandpaper in the direction of the grain and then a coating of glaze color is applied to the entire surface. The surface is then wiped off and the glaze is left hanging in the scuffs left by the sandpaper which gives the surface the characteristic brush strokes. Also, there is a random distribution of glaze residue left in the profiles of the surface. This is the most pronounced glaze option available. Shadow Glaze Glaze color is only applied to areas with profile and then wiped with the intent of creating a random application of color in the profile and inside corners of doors. Because the glaze is not applied to the entire surface, the base coat color will not be affected by this process. Wire Brushing The wire brushing application is available on PS White Oak, QS White Oak and Rift Cut White Oak and is always paired with a glaze. The finished surface is scuffed with a hard-bristle brush in the direction of the grain and then a coating of glaze color is applied to the entire surface. The surface is then wiped off and the glaze is left hanging in the scuffs left by the wire brush. Country Finish Options This process involves sanding through the finished surface of a cabinet door to expose bare wood. The outside edges of the door plus the leading edge on the inside of a raised panel are sanded randomly resulting in the look of well worn country furniture. A sample door with the Country finish is strongly recommended. materials & finishes 56

57 Heritage Options A variety of techniques, applied prior to staining or painting, will be used in combination to create the look and feel of the effects of time and use on a piece of furniture. The techniques include: Worm Holes, Worn Corners & Edges, Dents & Dings, Rasping, or Aged (which includes all four of the Heritage techniques). A description of each technique follows. Heritage Worm Holes - a random distribution of small hole patterns that run in the direction of the grain; applied prior to staining or painting for a subtle result. Order Code is H-WHL. Heritage Worn Corners & Edges - the outside corners of the frame and raised center panel of the door are sanded to a rounded edge and the leading edges of the door are sanded in random places; applied prior to staining or painting for a subtle result. Order Code is H-WCE. Heritage Dents & Dings - a random distribution of a variety of shaped and sized indentations into the wood; applied prior to staining or painting. Order Code is H-DND. Heritage Rasping - the outside edges of the door frame are randomly marked with a rasp; applied prior to staining or painting. Order Code is H-RSP. Heritage Aged - includes a combination of Worm Holes, Worn Corners & Edges, Dents & Dings, and Rasping; applied prior to staining or painting. Order Code is H-AGED. A sample door with any of the above Heritage techniques is strongly recommended. It is important to note that all of these techniques are intended to be applied in a random manner and as such, there will be no option to specify the exact placement or intensity of the technique. These techniques will only be applied to raised panel doors, to the solid frame area of a flat panel door, to overlay fillers, and to solid wood appliance frames.
