6 History of shutters People have selected shutters for their windows for centuries mainly because of the added security and storm protection they provide. The louver shutter was developed to allow greater flexibility and light control compared to solid shutters. It is commonly believed that shutters were first used in ancient Greece in order to provide light control, ventilation and protection in that tropical environment. Those first shutters were likely constructed with fixed louvers made out of marble. Eventually, the concept of shutters spread throughout the Mediterranean and the form began to change. Wood started to replace marble as a more suitable material for production and designers started developing movable louver shutters to allow varying amounts of light and air into a room. By Tudor and Elizabethan times, glass windows started to be used, but they were very expensive. Glass was therefore reserved for the upper half of the window. Windows remained closed with solid shutters below the sash. Hinged glazed sashes began replacing the solid shutters in the 15th century. After that point, interior shutters were increasingly used as decoration in homes rather than for strictly functional purposes. Woodwork like window shutters and mouldings ultimately became the main decorative elements in smaller houses in early 18th century England. As the Spanish started colonizing the Americas, they brought shutters to the New World. Mansions in the South used shutters and in fact the term plantation shutters was derived from this area. Shutters on these mansions usually had wider louvers than used earlier and were almost always painted white. A tale about the invention of shutters takes place in 17th century France. After Louis XIV moved the Court from the Louvre in Paris to Versailles, he enjoyed a festive life. One of his favourite pastimes was to admire the beautiful women of his court bathe in the many ponds within his gardens. However, he noticed that the bathing women also distracted guards on duty to protect the palace. Rumor holds that Louis XIV had movable louvered shutters installed around the garden walls so that he could open them and look but the guards would not be able to see. A1

8 Product Summary Top Rail Traditional Front Centre Tilt Bar Rabbet Stile Top Rail Basics The basic shutter assembly is a shutter panel hinged to a frame. The panel consists of louvers which pivot open and closed, with stiles on the sides and rails on the top and bottom. Panels over 60" in height require at least one divider rail. Top and bottom rails are typically 4" in height, although 2" rails are available for shutters up to 20" wide by 36" high. s Three louver sizes are available: 2 1/2", 3 1/2" and 4 1/2". The louvers have an appealing elliptical design. The louvers add structural strength to the panel because of their thickness. 2 1/2 Stile Enduralink System The shutter louvers are opened and closed using a tilt bar linked to the louvers with our unique Enduralink system (patent pending). The tilt bar can be ordered in the traditional location front centre on the panel or on the front hinge side or rear hinge side of the panel. One type of Enduralink is used for all tilt bar locations. Divider Rail Hinges Bottom Rail Shutter Hinges 3 leaf hinges are available in White, Silk, Almond, Pewter, Mocha or Antique Bronze. Stainless steel hinges are available at a surcharge. An optional 2 leaf removable pin hinge is also available upon request in the colours mentioned above. Divider Rails Divider rails enhance privacy. With a divider rail in place, the separate sections of the panel operate independently of each other. A divider rail is required for all single panels greater than 60" in height. 3 1/2 4 1/2 T-Post The T-Post is a versatile structural component inserted vertically into shutter frames to separate shutter sections and allow for placement of more panels within the same opening. T-Posts give added strength to wider openings. Panels can be hinged to T-Posts similarly as to how they are hinged to the frame. The T-Posts enables the consumer to custom design their own openings. T-Post Surca Locking System This exclusive system, with an adjustable tension feature, eliminates the use of magnets to hold the shutter panels closed. The Surca Locking System is standard, while magnets are available as a no charge option. Note: Three-sided frame applications, as well as no-frame applications, may require the use of magnets. 1 1/2 2 A3

10 Panel Configurations L R LR LL RR Panel folding diagrams detail the manner in which the panels open, close and fold using hinges. LLRR In this product configuration section, virtually all popular shutter configurations are shown. Each configuration has a letter code next to it. Panel configuration diagrams are found in section C. LLTR Using the versatile T-Post, the possible panel combinations are practically endless. LRR Note: Depending on the frame selection, final width will vary. A letter stands for each individual panel. The direction the panel folds is indicated using the letters L LTRR for left and R for right. Double letter combinations indicate Bi-fold panels. A small circle indicates the point where a panel is hinged to the wall, T-Post or frame. LRTLR The letter T indicates the location of a T-Post. Note: Panel configurations are always given from left to right. LLTRR A7

21 Product Specifications Standard Panel System Standard panel systems can consist of multiple shutter panels Standard Panel System Example in a variety of hinged configurations. In addition to being hinged from the frames, panels may be hinged from T-Posts, which serve as intermediate vertical supports. Two panels may also be hinged together in a Bi-fold design. Bi-fold Track System In a Bi-fold track system, the shutter panels are connected to top and bottom tracks which both support the hinged panels and guide their folding movement. A special frame is used with Bi-fold track systems, although the tracks may also be attached directly inside the door or window opening. In sliding door openings, the frames are usually threesided, with the optional bottom track attached to the floor. Individually Hinged Bi-fold Track System Example Overhead View T-Post Bi-fold Bypass Track System Shutter panels in a Bypass track system are not hinged. Instead, they slide on top tracks to open and close. Two tracks or more are required so that the panels or connected pairs of panels can slide past each other with louvers in the closed position. The tracks can also be attached to a special Bypass frame or directly to the door or window opening. In door openings, the frames are usually three-sided, with floor guides attached to the floor. Note: Bypass track systems are recommended for openings over 78 in width. Track Bypass Track System Example Overhead View Track Track Overhead View Track B4

Consider the following: Size 2 1/2, 3 1/2 or 4 1/2 Tilt bar location Number of panels T-Posts are required on windows if they exceed specs. If not specified, factory will calculate placement. Tracking systems are recommended on Bypass configurations 78 wide or wider. Obstructions that will interfere with frame, panel or louver operation. Hinges White, Silk, Almond, Pewter, Mocha, Antique Bronze or Stainless Steel. Measure all openings, even though they may appear to be identical When specifying measurements, state width first and then height All measurements should be in inches and measured to 1/16 of an inch. B16

34 Measuring Guidelines Inside Mount with No Frame Very accurate measurements are critical for this application. For proper fit, record width and height to the nearest 1/16". When determining squareness of the opening, if the diagonal measurements are not equal, framed shutters should be considered. Note: If no frame application is used, small light gaps will exist around the edges of the panels. Your ordered measurements are the tight size of the window from which deductions will be taken. Standard width deductions are 1/16" for hinges and 1/8" between panels. Standard height deductions are 3/16" (1/16" top of panel and 1/8" bottom of panel). Divider Rail Placement The divider rail should be placed to meet customer s needs, within minimum and maximum divider rail guidelines. You must indicate placement of the divider rail. Otherwise, the divider rail is placed in the centre of the panel. There will be a variance of 3/4 up or down for custom divider rail location. Outside mounts: measure from the bottom of where the frame will be located to the centre point of the desired location of the divider rail. Inside mounts: measure from the bottom inside of the opening to the centre point of the desired location of the divider rail. Three-sided frames: measure from the floor or sill to the centre point of the desired location of the divider rail. Frame Outside Mount Centre Point of Desired Divider Rail Location Matching Divider Rail Locations on Windows of Different Heights To match the location of divider rails across windows of different heights: A Determine the desired divider rail location for all windows. B. Mark that location on the moulding or wall at the first window. C. Measure from the floor to your mark. D. Carry that measurement to all the other windows and mark the moulding or wall at each location. E. Then measure up to the mark at all windows, following the procedure for outside mounts, inside mounts or three-sided frames. The divider rail will then be located the same distance from the floor on all windows. Note: Be sure the divider rail will be located at least 20" from the top and bottom of all panels. Divider Rail Height Measuring for Divider Rails Divider Rail 2 One divider rail is required for panels greater than 60" in height. The front visible portion of the divider rail is 2". Please note that when specifying a custom location for the divider rail, there is a minimum of 20" and a maximum of 60" from the divider rail to other divider rails or to the top and bottom of a shutter panel. Note: Divider rail location may vary by 3/4" up or down. Inside Mount Centre the line on the door Floor Centre Point of Desired Divider Rail Location B17

35 Measuring Guidelines Unequal Panel Widths One of the advantages of Tilia Wood Shutters is their versatility. They can be custom built to match the style, size and configuration of virtually any window or opening - including unequal panel widths within the same window. Unequal Panels with No T-Post First, measure and record the overall width and height of the window, as explained on the previous pages. Then: A. Measure from the edge of frame of your overall width measurement to the centre of the first vertical mullion. B. Measure from the centre of the first vertical mullion to the centre of the second vertical mullion. C. Measure from the centre of the second vertical mullion to the right-most point of your overall width measurement. Unequal Panel Widths, No T-Post Unequal Panels with T-Post First, measure and record the overall width and height of the window as explained on the previous pages. Then: A. Measure from the edge of frame of your overall width measurement to the centre of the first vertical mullion. B. Measure from the left-most point of your overall width measurement to the centre of the second vertical mullion. C. Repeat this procedure for any additional T-Post distances. Unequal Panel Widths, with T-Post A B Using the T-Post The T-Post is a versatile structural component inserted vertically into shutter frames to separate shutter sections and allow for placement of more panels within the same opening. T-Post gives added strength and stability to wider openings. Panels can be hinged to the T-Post similarly to how they are hinged to the frame. Unless unequal panels are specified, the T-Post will be spaced for equal panel widths according to the configuration ordered. T-Post 1 1/2 2 A B C Frame T-Post Notes: When added together, the three individual widths (A, B and C) must equal the overall width measurement. For a four-panel window, measure from the second to the third vertical mullion and then from the third mullion to the right-most point of your overall measurement. With three panels, the centre panel must be hinged to one of the end panels in a Bi-fold configuration. With four panels, each of the two centre panels is hinged to an end panel. T-Post B18

36 Measuring Guidelines Outside Mount with L Frame and Extended L Frame and Casing at least 1 1/2" Wide A. Measure the width from outside casing to outside casing at the top, middle, and bottom of the window opening. Record the largest measurement. B. Measure the height from outside casing to outside casing at the left, centre, and right of the window opening. Record the largest measurement. Your ordered measurements will be the finished size of the shutter including the frame. Outside Mount with L Frame and Extended L Frame and Casing less than 1 1/2" Wide or No Casing The frame can still be mounted on a smaller moulding. A. Measure the width inside the opening at the top, middle, and bottom. B. Measure the height inside the opening at the left, centre, and right. C. Add 3" (1 1/2" per side) to the largest width and largest height measurements. If a reveal is required, please specify. Your ordered measurements will be the finished size of the shutter including the frame. Outside Mount with No Casing Outside Mount with Casing Inside Mount with Z Frame and Sill Mount Frame Inside mounts pose an added degree of difficulty due to several factors. Cranks, latches, depth, and squareness of the window opening must be considered. For inside mounts, all measurements should be tight, and measured to the nearest 1/16". A. Measure the width inside the opening at the top, middle, and bottom. Record the smallest measurement. B. Measure the height inside the opening at the left, centre, and right. Record the smallest measurement. C. To determine squareness, measure diagonally from top left to bottom right and from top right to bottom left. Your ordered measurements are the tight size of the window from which deductions will be taken. Standard deductions are 1/8" from ordered width and height. Note: If the two measurements vary more than 1/2" you should consider an outside mount application. Diagonal Measurement Add 1" to these minimum depth requirements if the tilt-bar will be located on the rear of the shutter. Also add the dimension required to clear any obstructions to louver movement, such as window cranks or latches. B19

37 Measuring Guidelines Bay or Bow Windows Introduction Bay and Bow windows are found in many of today s homes. There are two ways to frame shutters in bay and bow windows: individually framed or perimeter framed. When perimeter framed, a continuous frame runs around the perimeter of the window to form the angles of the bay or bow. Individually Framed Individual framing is a simple, effective way to cover bay and bow windows. The separate frames butt together to form the angles of the bay or bow. Note: There is no surcharge for individually framed bay and bow window shutters. Outside Mount A. Using a sample piece of Z Frame as a gauge, draw a perimeter around the window to mark the outside edges of the frames. B. Measure and record the widths W1 to W6 along the marks as shown in the outside mount illustration at the right. C. Measure and record the heights H1 to H4 as shown in the same illustration. D. Measure and record the angles A1 to A4 as shown in the illustration. Either measure the angles with a protractor or the Maxxmar measuring device enclosed to form the angles and submit them with your order. Using the supplied tail fastener, reassembly of the frame is quick and easy. All holes have been prerouted. Position the four frame pieces face up according to how they are marked on the back. Place the dove tail fastener into the pre-routed holes and hammer delicately into place. Hoffman Inserts Positioned for Installation T-post Attachment If one or more T-posts are used, mount them to the frame using the pre-drilled holes in the T-post and frame. The top of the T-posts are marked and multiple T-posts are numbered, with number one starting at the left side of the frame. T-posts T-posts Light Stop L-Frames or Z-Frame Shutter Panel Attachment To complete the reassembly process, attach the shutter panels to the frame. Panel locations are marked on each shutter and all hinge holes are pre-drilled Basic Frame Installation There are four types of frames: L-frame, Extended L-frame, Z-frame, and Sill Mount Frame. The procedure and sequence of mounting screws attachment is similar for all four types. Centre the frame inside or outside the window opening. Attach the top of the frame first. Mount the first screw in the middle of the frame and then attach the two corners. On larger units, space additional screws evenly, no more than 30 apart and near the top of each T-post. Move the bottom of the frame left or right to align the panels. Once the panels are aligned, attach the bottom of the frame. Mount the first screw in the middle of the frame and then attach the two corners. Space any additional screws as you did at the top of the frame. If necessary to align the panels, raise or lower the side frames or T-posts. Only after the panels are all aligned, fasten the sides of the frame using screws at every hinge location. Fill all holes with screw plugs for a finished look. Note: It is important to place shims at the bottom of the frame to help support the weight of the frame when installing. Z Frame and Sill Mount Frame Inside Mount The Z-frame is inside mounted with the decorative face flush against the outside of the window opening. Magnet Attachment (if required) (optional) Magnets ensure closure of all shutter panels. They are attached to the top and bottom of the frame. The magnets are positioned so that they contact striker plates screwed to the rear of the top and bottom rails on the shutter panels. Attach striker plates where the top and bottom rails meet the stiles as illustrated. With L-frames or Z-frame, the edge of the plate should be 1/4 from the edge of the rails. Striker Plates Striker Plates Rear of Shutter (Frame Not Shown) Hinges With no frames, the edge of the plate should be flush with the edge of the rails. The hole for the striker plate screw should be away from the top or bottom edge of the rail so that the flat part of the plate contacts the magnet. Note that the striker plates are attached to the side of the panel furthest from the hinge attachment to the frame or T-posts. With the panel(s) closed, mark the frame for magnet placement so that the magnets will contact the striker plates and secure the panels in the proper position. Attach the magnets to the frame. Test their placement by opening and closing the shutter panel(s). Adjust if necessary. L Frames and Extended L Frame - Inside/ Outside Mounts The L-frames can be inside or outside mounts. If used as an outside mount, it may be mounted directly to molding, if the moulding is at least 2 1/2 wide. Note: If holes have to be drilled on site, please countersink using a #6 screw 3/32 and 5/16 drill bit. Note: If using L-Frames as an inside mount, caulking may be required if opening is out of square. Frame Top Rail (Dotted Line) Stile Magnet Striker Plate Caulking Caulking may be required to fill in minor gaps between the frame and wall or between mitered corners of the frame. Note: Please predrill magnets holes with a 1/16 drill bit to prevent splitting of wood. B29

47 Installation Shim Mark Where To Install Top Hinge Install the Shutter Panels Place a 1/8 shim in the bottom of the window frame on the side where the shutter hinges will be located. With the top hinge open, position the shutter panel in the window on top of the shim. Mark where to attach the top hinge (see above illustration). Attach the top hinge to the inside of the frame. The barrel of the hinge must be outside the frame to allow the shutter panel to open and close properly. Open the bottom hinge and attach it to the frame. If the panel has more than two hinges, do not attach them until after aligning the panel(s). If the window has more than one panel, repeat the procedure to attach its top and bottom hinges to the other side of the window frame. Close the panels and check their alignment. To adjust the panels, shim the top or bottom hinge to pivot the panel slightly. After aligning the panels, attach any remaining hinges to the window frame. Install shutter Frame magnets according to the procedures Magnet outlined in the Magnet Attachment Top Rail section. Attach striker Striker Plate (Dotted plates flush with the Line) edges of the top and Stile bottom rails and then attach the magnets to the window frame so that they contact the striker plates when the shutter panel is closed. Installation of Unframed Shutters Unframed shutters are always inside mounted. To install unframed shutters, the hinges attached to the shutter panel(s) are screwed to the inside of the window frame. The shutter panel(s) should be flush with the front of the frame, with the barrel of the hinges just outside the frame. French Doors The French Door Frame is to be utilized for French Door applications. It will be mounted on top of the trim and the panels have to be ordered with the tilt bar on the front. (Front Centre or Front hinge side). Please measure outside trim to outside trim and add 1/2 per side. The will give 1/16 reveal. Frame will NOT be pre-drilled. Note: Maxxmar strongly recommends that all installation screws are drilled on an angle to miss the glass of the french door. Cut Outs Partial and total cut outs may be done in the rails, stiles and frames. Spring loaded louver pin Repair of damaged louvers is simple with the spring loaded louver pin. Remove the damaged louver by cutting it out and slipping a replacement louver with the spring loaded louver pin into the stile holes. 2 1/2" Measure exact size of cut-out including depth and draw it exactly on the order form giving starting / finishing points and depth of the cut-out. A mapped out diagram of the cut-out should be put on the order form. 1/2" 1 1/4" 1/2" 1 5/8" French Doors Frame 1 1/4" Adjusting the Surca Locking System Use a small screwdriver. 48 Installation Bi-fold Track System Outside Mount Tracks Top and Bottom Bi-fold Track Systems utilize a top track to carry the wheels connected to the shutter panels. In addition, a spring-loaded pivot pin rides in a bottom track to keep the panels aligned. The top track is attached to the frame and the optional bottom track is attached to the floor. Installation Procedures Because of their larger size, Bi-fold Track Systems are usually shipped knocked down. When assembled, follow the steps below. Step One Position the frame around the opening to mark where the outside edges will be located. Mark the top, left and right edge locations. Step Two Hang the frame and centre the frame so that the left and right edges align with the marks from step one. Step Three Screw only the top frame to the mounting surface. Attach the screws into studs, which are typically 16" or 24" apart. Step Four Square the side frames and fasten the top and bottom. Space additional screws no more than 30" apart. Step One The frame is attached inside the opening through the pre-drilled holes. Step Two Attach the frame. Shim the top frame, if necessary, so that it is mounted perfectly level. Shim the side frames, if necessary, so that they are square with the top frame. Cover screws in the side frames with the provided caps. 2 Installation Procedures Without Frame Step One Mark where to install the track so that its top front edge is recessed 1/2" in from the front edge of the opening. Step Two Fasten the track aligned with the mark, making sure the top pivot bracket(s) and wheel carriers are in place. Mount with the provided screws through the pre-drilled holes in the track. Step Three Fasten the bottom pivot bracket(s) and bottom guide track to the floor. Centre these components 7/8" in from the front edge of the opening. This will position them directly under the top track. Step Four Mount the adjustable bottom pivot bolt into the bottom pivot bracket and then push the springloaded top pivot pin into the top pivot bracket. Note The variable panel to floor clearance is 3/8" to 1/2". Step Five Fasten the wheel carrier bolt(s) into the wheel carrier receiver at the top of each panel and lock them in place. Then insert the springloaded bottom pivot pin(s) into the bottom guide track. Step Six Open and close the panels. If necessary to align a panel, turn the panel adjustment nut on the wheel carrier. 50 Installation Bypass Track System Outside Mount Tracks Top and Bottom Bypass Track Systems utilizes two top tracks to carry the shutter panels so that the panels can slide past each other. In addition to the two top tracks which is attached to the frame, sections of floor guide are attached to the floor to keep the panels vertically aligned. Installation Procedures Because of their larger size, Bypass Track Systems are usually shipped knocked down. When assembled, follow the steps below. Step One Position the frame around the opening to mark where the outside edges will be located. Mark the top, left and right edge locations. Step Two Hang the frame and centre the frame so that the left and right edges align with the marks from step one. Step Four Square the side frames and fasten them at top and bottom. Space additional screws no more than 30" apart. Step Five With the wheel carriers in the track, fasten the aluminum track to the top of the frame, aligning the pre-drilled holes in the track with the grooves in the frame. Step Six If any panels are to be connected in pairs, place the panels flat on the floor, slide one into the other. Attach the Bypass bottom track with the provided screws. Step Seven Fasten the wheel carrier bolts into the wheel carrier receivers at the top of each panel and lock them in place. Step Eight Attach the floor guides to the floor. Refer to the diagram below for placement. The guides should be positioned so that each shutter panel is always over at least one guide. Step Nine Open and close the panels. If necessary to align a panel, turn the panel adjustment nut on the wheel carrier. 51 Installation Bypass Track System Inside Mount With or Without Frame Inside-mounted Bypass Track Systems can be installed with or without a frame. Installation procedures are slightly different for the two options. Installation Procedures With Frame Assemble the frame if it was shipped knocked down. When assembled, follow the steps below. Step One The frame is attached inside the window opening through the pre-drilled holes. Drill 3" from each end and space additional holes no more than 24" apart. Step Two Attach the frame. Shim the top frame, if necessary, so that it is mounted perfectly level. Shim the side frames, if necessary, so that they are square with the top frame. Cover screws in the side frames with the provided caps. Installation Procedures Without Frame Step One Mark where to install the track so that its top front edge is recessed 1/2" in from the front edge of the opening. Step Two Fasten the track aligned with the mark, making sure the top pivot bracket(s) and wheel carriers are in place. Mount with the provided screws through the pre-drilled holes in the track. Step Three If any panels are to be connected in pairs, place the panels flat on the floor, slide one into the other. Attach Bypass bottom track with the provided screws. Step Four Fasten the wheel carrier bolts into the wheel carrier receivers at the top of each panel and lock them in place. Step Five Attach the floor guides to the floor. The guides should be positioned so that each shutter panel is always over at least one guide. Step Six Open and close the panels. If necessary to align a panel, turn the panel adjustment nut on the wheel carrier. Wheel Carrier Bolt Lock Wheel Carrier Receiver Track Note: With framed inside mounts, the factory will take 1/8" from the width and 1/8" from the height. If you require different deductions, specify them at the time of ordering. 3 15/16 1/4 1 Shutter Panel Shutter Panel 3/8 To 1/2 Floor Guide 5/8-3/4 Clearance Shutter Panel to Floor Note: If holes have to be drilled on site, countersink using #6 screw 3/32 and 5/16 drill bit. 52 A Natural Product What to look for when you purchase Tilia Wood Shutters The following terms describe some of the more common characteristics you will find in all wood shutter products. Tilia Wood Shutters is a natural product and we cannot warranty against variations in colour, grain and texture. Flat Grain Grain The direction and regularity of the wood fibers - varies widely depending on where it was cut from within the tree. The type, direction and density of the grain produce the unique patterns and colour variations that make each piece of wood distinctive. Tiger Striping Grain Change Pin Knots the remnants of branches encase by the growth of new wood. Burl Figures Formed by irregular growth on the outer surface of the tree. Mineral Deposits Usually the result of environmental circumstances affecting the development of the tree. Note: Tilia Wood Shutters are manufactured to industry standards. Minor imperfections or blemishes not noticeable under ordinary light from a distance of three feet are not considered defects. Warpage of any component that does not exceed 1/32 per foot will not be considered a defect. B35
