6 The History of Shutters Shutters have had a long history of protecting windows on the outside, but they were originally designed for the inside of a home. In Tudor ( ) and Elizabethan ( ) times glass was very expensive, and was therefore only installed on the top half of windows, the bottom half being covered with shutters. These shutters were made of boards, when open, fresh air came into the room and the shutters folded back to look like decorative wall panels. When closed, usually with a bar across, light still came through the glazed upper half of the window. By the late seventeenth century, double-hung windows were popular. Shutters were still attached inside and decorative, but they now covered the whole window. During the Victorian period ( ) when more houses were constructed from wood, shutters moved outdoors. The former stone and brick homes had such deeply recessed windows that much thinner and exterior shutters could now be accessed easily from the inside. By the late nineteenth century, shutters were used as much for decoration as for their practical functions of shelter and protection for the glass. When mechanisation entered Victorian millworks, shutters became more sophisticated. They light through and provide adequate ventilation. In the 1980s, window technology and window covering choices eliminated the need for the functional use of outside shutters. However, the revival of Victorian style housing and the interest in rehabilitating century old homes are bringing shutters back into the limelight as an interior window treatment. They are often made from wood, with all its inherent on going maintenance problems of chipping, warping, shrinking and peeling. Hunter Douglas Polyresin Shutters are an extremely durable shutter. They offer the traditional look of Plantation style shutters without these age-old maintenance problems. Warping, shrinking, chipping, peeling and colour fading are things of the past with Hunter Douglas Polyresin Shutters. Hunter Douglas Polyresin shipped complete with all frames and hardware ready for installation. They are available in: White, Pearl and Vanilla. Do not be fooled by the competition. 57 Helpful Hints Options Before measuring, discuss the various options available with your customer. -standard -double radius Note: Shutters are room darkening but not black-out. Obstructions When measuring, account for obstructions such as protruding window cranks and window sills. Protruding cranks may be replaced with T-handles, or can be accommodated with extensions for use with outside mounts (refer to Section C-Clearance Charts). Shutters may be installed on top of sills using either three or four sided frames, or using four sided L-Frames with added extensions. Use your sample panels and frames from your sales bag to ensure correct clearances. Depth clearances This is the depth of window recess required for trouble free louvre operation. Measure the clearance required for desired application (refer to Section C- Clearances) Use the sample panels and frames from your Sales bag to ensure accuracy. Single panels (shown as L or R) Single panels look better when ordered in widths between 381mm and 610mm. For best results, we recommend that widths greater than 820mm be ordered as two panels (P2) instead of one panel (P1). The minimum single panel width is 152mm and the maximum single panel width is 820mm. Note: Warranty is void on oversized panels. Bi-fold panels (shown as LL [Left Bi-fold] or RR [Right Bi-fold]) A maximum of two panels may be hinged together. The combined widths may not exceed 1219mm. D1

Record number of panels and hinge style (i.e., P4-LLRR). 4. Measure from the left side: A. From the left edge of the frame to the right edge a Recess mount. B. For any middle panels measure from the left edge to the right edge of each panel. C. For the right panel, measure from the leftedge of the last panel to the right edge of the frame for a Face mount, or to the right inside opening for a Recess mount. 5. Record these measurements in the Uneven Panel Widths Section of the Order Form. The panel widths added together MUST equal the total overall width. 59 Importance of Height Consistency 1) a top rail 2) a bottom rail 3) a number of evenly spaced louvres 4) a divider rail if over 1500mm tall well as maintain an equal number of louvres and in adjacent shutters, all shutters must be ordered the same height. If the height measurements differ, apply one of the three options below: For Recess mount without frame or L-Frame, reduce taller height measurement by 3mm max.; order shutters same height. 2 For Recess mount with Z-Frame, or Trim Frame, deduct a maximum of 13mm from tallest height measurement; order shutters same height. For height adjustments of more than 13mm, go to a Face mount; order shutters same height. Top Rail Louvres Divider Rail Bottom Rail D3

60 Locating Divider Rails A Divider rail is required if shutter panel height is over 1500mm. A second divider rail is required if panel height is over 2700 mm. Distance between rails must be less than 1500mm. Although added strength is the main feature of a divider rail, it also allows bottom louvres to be fully closed for privacy and top louvres open for light. Top Operating Louvres Divider Rail FACE MOUNT Distance-up is the distance from the bottom frame to the center of where you would like the divider rail located. Bottom Operating Louvres RECESS MOUNT Distance-up is the distance from the top of the sill to the center of where you would like the divider rail located. Note: Centre line location of divider rails may vary up or down by a maximum of 25mm for 64mm louvre, by 38mm for 89mm louvre, and 51mm for 114mm louvre. For adjacent openings to have the same divider location the height must be same. Note: indicate this fact on the order form, and the factory will discuss this with you. room to room. Diagram A Diagram B A B 2 3 Diagonal squareness check 1 CHOICE OF FRAME SIDES AND LOUVRE Use the sample shutter panels to determine proper louvre rotation. Check that your chosen louvre will overcome any obstruction by placing the frame and panel in front of the obstructions. It is recommended that a Recess mount has a minimum recess depth of 50mm. A one sided frame (top) can be ordered for this application. Indicate BP in the frame options section of the Order Form. If additional projection is required, request BP extension. Each extension is 19mm. 2 MEASURE WIDTH Measure in three places (top, middle, bottom) and record the smallest measurement onto a order Form if the application is for a Recess mount. For a Face mount, measure from outside of frame to outside of frame. It is normal to t a round the trim (Architrave) 3 CHECK FOR SQUARENESS Measure on the diagonal (see Diagram B). If the diagonal measurements are not identical, a Recess mount is not recommended. An alternative way to check for a perfectly square window, simply place your panel in each of the four all corners, the window opening is not square. 4 ONLY IF A DIVIDER RAIL IS BEING USED The measurement recorded is determined from the bottom sill to the middle of where the divider rail is to be located. One divider rail is required for panels over 1500mm with a maximum 1500mm between the middle of the divider rail and either top or bottom rail. Two divider rails are required for panels over 2700 mm in height with a maximum 1500 mm between any two rails. F6 5 MEASURE HEIGHT Measure in three places (left, middle, right) and record the smallest measurement onto an Order Form if the application is for a Recess mount.
