2 Should Know / Be Able To Do After Attending the Session: Recognize and appreciate the architectural and historic value that old wood windows contribute to the significance of an older building. Identify easy, inexpensive, DYI repairs that every homeowner can make to their wood windows to keep them functioning and effective for another years. The many arguments for keeping old windows versus replacing with new vinyl, wood or aluminum replacement units.

9 Each year countless wood windows are either sent to the landfills or end up stacked in architectural salvage warehouses. The result is the loss of architectural integrity, as one of the most important features of a building is lost forever.

30 BASIC STEP BY STEP PROCEDURE FOR A WINDOW RESTORATION PROJECT: 1. Remove sashes from frame and install temporary weather panel. 2. Transport windows to work space 3. Remove heavily built-up paint from frame, sill, parting beads, and stops. 4. Prime and repaint frame and sills where necessary. 5. Remove built up paint from sash and old glazing from exterior face of sash. 6. Carefully remove glazing clips/point and glass. Every effort should be made to remove the glass pane without breaking it. 7. If wood members are rotted, mill new wood replacement parts. Joinery can be strengthened with screws and wood plugs. Wood can be consolidated or epoxied as needed. 8. Prime wood sash with high quality oil-based primer. 9. Reinstall glass and reglaze with glazing putty. 10. Allow putty to cured then apply two coats (min) of finish paint. 11. Clean glass. 12. Transport sash back to window opening. 13. Reinstall sash in frame with new sash cords and oiled pulleys.
