With the acquisition of Startrite Machines in 1995 (the widely acknowledged market leaders in the manufacture of industrial bandsaws in the UK for over 50 years) we have a pooled experience of over 80 years in the design, manufacture and support of top quality bandsaws and are still supplying spares for machines in the field that are over 30 years old. This new range of bandsaws from Record Power has been three years in development and testing and has been designed to offer the serious home woodworker the best choice of bandsawing solutions at each level of budget, workshop size and capacity requirement. Quite simply, we have aimed to offer better build quality, better specification, better features, better value and better long term support than all our competitors at each level and major price point. Many bandsaws look the same on the surface or on paper, but careful examination will reveal the true value of a properly constructed machine (see KEY ASPECTS on page 6 for guidance). Bandsaws For many serious woodworkers the bandsaw is probably the most useful and versatile addition they will make to their workshop. The combination of deep cutting, the ability to cut both curved and straight lines, tilting tables and a huge choice of blade widths and teeth combinations opens up a huge range of applications to the bandsaw user, whilst taking up minimal fl oor space. You can rip, re-saw, cut wafer thin veneers and tenon cheeks, bevels, curves and even circles to name but a few. The more experienced and adventurous users often design and make an array of jigs for their bandsaws to cut everything from wedges to cones and to speed up repetitive jobs or simply improve accuracy. 4 KEY ASPECTS OF BANDSAW CONSTRUCTION The construction of the machine will clearly have a major bearing on its longevity, accuracy and reliability. Listed below are the key aspects to consider in purchasing any bandsaw and how Record Power compares with the competition at similar price points. Finely ground and polished grey cast iron tables TABLES RECORD POWER BANDSAWS Record Power are famous for their extensive use of high quality cast grey iron and our bandsaw tables are no exception. Large and heavy for maximum support our tables are finely ground to a polished finish to minimise friction, the BS300, BS350 & BS500 also have mitre slots on either side of the blade and rack and pinion table tilt to make accurate angles easy to achieve. OTHER BANDSAWS Many of our competitors use smaller tables with roughly machined surfaces that can impede the progress of the work-piece. Most have only one mitre slot to the right of the blade, making mitres on wide work-pieces impossible to achieve and most do not have rack and pinion tilt mechanisms so have to be tilted by hand. This can be difficult to do accurately and you often get movement just as you try to nip it in position whilst only supporting it by hand. MOTORS RECORD POWER BANDSAWS Record Power motors are designed to provide ample power for the capacities of the machines and are fan ventilated, induction motors. In this leaflet we quote the continuously rated power output of our motors as this is the most meaningful spec for a motor. OTHER BANDSAWS Many of our competitors use lower powered motors for the same capacities as Record Power machines which may cause the machine to struggle at at the larger end and shorten the life of the motor. Some quote intermittent or input ratings to flatter the power specification on paper, but you should always check what the continuously rated power output is for a machine. Some even have motors that are ventilated by slots in the case which can be dangerous and prone to burning out as sawdust enters the motor. MACHINE FRAMES RECORD POWER BANDSAWS Our frames are folded and welded from industrial grade sheet steel and are designed with a wide ridged spine for extra rigidity (BS300, BS350 & BS500) OTHER BANDSAWS Many of our competitors simply weld bandwheel boxes to a piece of standard rolled hollow box section for the spine. OTHER BANDSAWS Many of our competitors use lightweight or poor quality wheels with thin spokes that can break under tension. Balancing can be poor and tyres thin or uneven which will wear and make tracking difficult. BLADE TENSIONING RECORD POWER BANDSAWS Our Blade Tensioning mechanism is driven by heavy duty springs and top slides and features cam action tension release (BS300, BS350 & BS500) for ease of blade changing and Blade Tension Indication that can be re-calibrated by the user to apply consistent tensions with ease. OTHER BANDSAWS Many of our competitors use cheap roller bearings as blade guides, some of which are configured so as to offer minimal contact with the blade and consequently less stability and support. Often access to guides can be poor and fiddly with the need to use tools for most adjustments. OTHER BANDSAWS Many of our competitors use cheap, medium duty springs and top slides that simply will not provide adequate tension especially on wider blades. They do not have cam action tension release or blade tension indication making each blade change a time consuming and haphazard affair.. Be clear what do you want to do with it. We have already said that a bandsaw is a versatile machine and so it is, but each user has their own set of requirements that will make one machine more suitable than another. For example a furniture maker requiring a machine to cut accurate veneers, tenons or to resaw will be better served by a machine that can take a wide blade, has a deep solid fence and a powerful motor. However for the woodturner wishing mainly to cut bowl blanks of modest depth wide blades, the rip fence and powerful motors are not particularly relevant. Of greater importance will be sound blade tracking, because the tighter the radius of the circle, the narrower the blade should be. And the narrower the blade is, the more difficult it is to track. Good blade guides will also be important if the blade is not to succumb to the side pressure generated by cutting circles which can either damage the blade or cause it to twist and create inaccuracies. What is your budget? Nobody wants to spend more than they need to but equally you cannot make a silk purse out of a sows ear, so the budget must be realistic for the applications and usage required. 6 BS500 KEY COMPONENTS ON A BS500 Rip fence The BS500 has an extra deep rip fence for strong support on large section timber. Through a cast iron clamp this fence runs on a solid steel bar for maximum rigidity. Cam action blade tension With the fl ick of a handle the tension is released on the blade enabling quick easy changing but, more importantly, when pushed back the same tension that was previously set is automatically applied to the new blade making blade changing a much less onerous task. Steel toolposts The toolpost holds the upper blade guides and has a major infl uence on the accuracy of the blade guidance. Twin mitre guide slots are installed and a quick-to-use levelling screw keeps both sides of the saw slot lined up perfectly. Underneath the table, a vastly improved trunnion arrangement with handwheel makes tilting the table a piece of cake...the rip fence is a huge improvement on previous offerings. The large section front rail and the substantial mounting bracket ensure maximum stability, helped by a locating rail at the back of the table. It s so easy to put this fence on and off...this model just drops on and tightens up with the large lever. The guide area is also completely redesigned, starting with a steel tool post that no longer fl exes if you apply heavy pressure. The guides themselves are industrial style normally seen on much heavier machines, and require no tools at all to set, which is wonderful. The whole tool post is on a rack and pinion mechanism so you can set the cutting height without putting your hand anywhere near the blade...the quantum leap forward in terms of features is reserved for the blade tensioning mechanism...with the new blade in place just fl ick the handle back and the original tension is restored...its diffi cult to fi nd fault with this machine it ploughs through everything you throw at it, and even deep ripping hard wood seems a breeze. I think the easy set up of all the controls inspires confi dence and even a novice should feel comfortable using it...it offers a range of professional features that mean this is probably the only bandsaw you will ever need.
