ESL - DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY / TECHNICS HANDTOOL IDENTIFICATION AND TERMINOLOGY One of the biggest difficulties in teaching ESL students practical skills is the lack of exposure to related technology and techniques. This is by no means any fault of their own, but a reflection of a limited curriculum, with an emphasis on knowledge rather than skill and the application of technology. To assist ESL students to identify general Handtools, which are the backbone to practical technics subjects, try implementing this Tool Identification Puzzle. Some of the non ESL students may even find it challenging! What to do. Print out several copies of the work sheet and cut up into sections. (don t forget to keep a uncut copy for checking). Depending on the age and ability of the students, you may want to either keep the Name and the Tool together and separate the Description, or separate the whole three. It is entirely up to you. Once the puzzle has been cut into sections you wanted, students are to then match the name of the tool, the photo and the description of each tool. This can either be done individually or in groups. Once the students have placed the pieces together, check against the master copy, then allow students to paste the matched tools, photos and descriptions in their workbooks. Name Tool Description Trimming Knife This particular knife has a retractable blade and can be used to cut to size many materials such as paper, cardboard veneers and vinyl Try Square 3 This square is smaller than a plate square and is used to measure angles of 90. As the mitre square, square also consists of a blade and a stock. 31 Multi Grips This tool is a hand held tool used to hold irregular shaped items with a vice like grip. A leaver locks a pivoting jaw into place clamping the work piece with a pinching action
Block Plane Chisels Bradawl Coping Saw This plane is a small palm size plane that is used in one hand. This plane is generally used on very fine work and for planing end grain and chamfers Bench firmer and bevel-edged are two common types. This tool consists of a handle and a blade with a sharp cutting edge, which is used in joint construction and for removing waste from the parent material This tool consists of a handle and a small cylindrical blade that is tapered to an even point. The primary use of this tool is to produce small holes for screws in soft timber without the need of drilling. The blade is placed across the grain and pushed down and twisted from sided-to-side This saw has a thin blade where the teeth point toward the handle. The replaceable blade can be rotated to any angle which is used to cut curves in this material File This particular tool consists of a handle and a blade that is made up of small saw-like teeth that remove particles of materials. The teeth point forward and cut on the forward stroke. This tool is manufactured in many shapes, sizes and grades
Cross Pein Hammer (Warrington Hammer) General purpose hammer with a flat face and wedge shaped pein. It is used for driving small nails and bands into timber. The Warrington hammer is commonly used in the Cabinetwork industry Jack Plane This plane is used to smooth surfaces of timber by removing thin shavings of wood. The number 5 plane is the most common type of plane, which is used to plan large surfaces of timber, for example when planing tapers and edges Mallet Described as a wooden hammer, this particular tool consists of a timber handle and timber head, and is used in woodwork for striking chisels or gouges Marking Gauge This gauge consists of a stock, stem and spur and is used to mark out timber, especially for joint construction. The gauge s action is to scribe or scratch a line parallel to an edge Marking Knife This knife is made with a point and a blade or knife edge at the other. It is used for marking across the grain when a saw cut is to be made
Mitre Square 19 Like the try square, this tool only has one function, which is to measure a particular angle. This square consists of a blade and a stock and used to mark and measure angles of Pincers Hand Saw Nail Punch Multi Grips This tool is a hand held tool used to hold irregular shaped items between two ridged faces. An adjustable pivoting jaw helps hold items in place, clamping the work piece with a pinching action This punch is used with a hammer to set the heads of brads and nails below the surface of timber This saw is larger than a tenon saw and has no stiffening rib along its back. This particular saw is used for cutting thin timber or sheet materials This device has a pinching action and is used to extract nails from timber. This is a hand-held tool that is used by gripping the nail close to the timber and levering the pincers away from you
Plate Square Combination Pliers Rule Larger than the Try Square, this tool is used to measure 90 degree angles. This square is consists of a L shape that is pressed out of one sheet of metal Are usually used to grip small objects, bend wire and nails and to cut. Round nose pliers and long nose pliers also closely related to this tool Broken down into measurement units of the millimetre this tool is used for general measuring, they can also be used to marking out or for testing flatness Sliding Bevel Screw Driver Also known as an Engineers bevel and this tool is used to mark, measure or transfer any angle from either a plan or template to the work piece and viceversa The two families of drivers include Flat and Phillips head. Both consists of a blade and a handle which are used in a rotating motion to set screws into timber
Adjustable Spanner 8 This is a spanner that consists of a movable jaw that can be adjusted to suit a variety of sized bolts. When using this spanner, make sure that the fixed jaw is taking most of the turning force! 45 Smoothing Plane This plane is used to remove thin shavings of wood. The number 4 plane is used to clean up or smooth the timber before sanding and to plane small surfaces Spoke Shave Measuring Tape Tenon Saw A distant relative to the Plane family. This tool is used to shape round stock and concave shapes. A sharp blade pares away the timber in a similar action to a plane. From time to time it is necessary to measure lengths longer than a standard 300mm or metre ruler. A retractable tape on this measuring device allows a measurement of up to 8 metres to be made. Also known as a backsaw, used for fine cutting where a perfectly straight cut is required. This saw is generally used with a bench hook to support the timber
