Peace River Woodturners Volume 8 Issue 2 A chapter of the American Association of Woodturners February 2015 Finial Turning with Bob Summers In This Issue It wasn t Cindy Drozda, but we had the next best thing. Bob Summers showed the members how he turns small ornamental finials. So small some would work as a great toothpick. What s always interesting about Bob s finials is that they are so small and turned with tools that are so large. A half inch bowl gouge to turn a toothpick sized finial is an achievement in itself. I always bring home some great information when watching this done. I m sure all our members felt the same.

3 FOOD-SAFE FINISH A Summery of non-toxic finishing products ideal for cutting boards, salad bowls, and other food-centric woodwork by Jonathan Binzen After scores of conversations with chemists, regulatory agencies, finish manufacturers, finishing experts, and woodworkers, I found that there are a few finishes that everyone agrees are food safe. However, these finishes tend to be the least protective, and the great majority are in a kind of limbo, with many experts saying most are fine for use with food but with others saying they should be avoided because there are some lingering questions about their safety. In the welter of contrary opinions about which finishes are food safe and which are not, a few naturally derived, unblended, no-hidden-ingredients, certainly nontoxic finishes stand out. Pure tung oil - Extracted from the nut of the china wood tree. Used as a base in many blended finishes. Available from catalogs and hardware stores. Difficult to apply, requires many coats, good water-resistance. Raw linseed oil - Pressed from flax seeds. Not to be confused with boiled linseed, which contains metallic driers. Listed as a food additive by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Very long curing time, good looks, low water-resistance, frequent reapplication. Mineral oil - Although derived from petroleum, it is colorless, odorless, tasteless and entirely inert. Sold as a laxative in drug stores and as a wood finish in hardware and kitchen-supply stores. Simple to apply, low waterresistance, frequent reapplication. Walnut oil - Pressed from the nuts of the walnut tree. Sold as a salad oil in health food stores and in large grocery stores. Walnut oil dries and won't go rancid. Easy to apply, frequent reapplication. Beeswax - The work of the honey bee. Can be mixed with an oil to create a better-smelling, slightly more water repellent finish. Sold in woodworking and turning catalogs. Carnauba wax - Derived from the Brazilian palm tree. Harder than beeswax and more water-resistant. Can be used straight on woodenware as a light protective coating or a topcoat polish. Sold in woodworking and turning catalogs. Shellac - A secretion from the lac bug. Harvested in India. Super blond shellac in flake form is the most waterresistant variety. A film-forming finish. Sold in woodworking catalogs and hardware and art supply stores. 3
Nothing - Available everywhere. Makes a reasonable finish for woodenware. No application time. Free. A recipe for one sweet finish - The food-safe finish that appeals most to me is one recommended by 4 Jim and Jean Lakiotes, West Virginia makers of spoons and other kitchen items, as well as furniture. Their finish is a mixture of mineral oil and beeswax. To make it, warm the mineral oil in a saucepan over low heat, and melt a chunk of beeswax in it equal to about one-fifth or one-sixth the volume of the oil. (At high heat, there's a potential for fire. Be sure to keep the heat low, and consider using a double boiler.) As the wax begins to flake apart and dissolve, stir frequently. When the mixture is blended, pour it into a jar to cool and solidify. To apply, wipe on an excess of the soft paste, let it dry a bit, then wipe it off. If you want to apply it as a liquid, you can reheat it. Like any mineral oil or wax finish that will take a lot of abuse, this one will need to be reapplied often to afford decent moisture protection. But applying this fragrant finish is such a pleasure that you may find yourself looking forward to the task. This article is excerpted from Jonathan Binzen's article "Which Finishes Are Food Safe," featured in Fine Woodworking #129. 4

9 Charles Foster & Toothpicks According to my Forest Products textbook (copyrighted in 1962), Charles Forster of Strong, Maine, is believed to be the first American to manufacture toothpicks. His first were handmade, but by 1860, he had to devise machines to keep up with the growing demand. A complete toothpick machine system would include a veneer lathe, six cutting machines, one drying oven, and one straightening and box filling machine. This system would require about 15 horsepower and the hourly output would be about 1,440,000 toothpicks. A standard cord of good wood yields about 6-9 million flat toothpicks. The preferred wood for toothpicks is White Birch because it is white, tasteless, strong enough, and straight grained. I read that about 4 million board feet were used annually in the U.S. They cannot use any red colored heartwood, so the logs are reduced to "bolts" from 10-1/2" to 24" in length and 8" to 20" in diameter. The "bolts" must be clear and are reduced to about 3" cores after turning. They are turned to "ribbons" 1/20th" thick x 2-7/16" wide, which are then fed into a pointing machine that bevels the edges. (I measured the toothpicks we have at home and they are 2-9/16" long). The strips are then wound onto a spool and when the spool is full, the roll of veneer is slipped off and taken to a cutting machine. Approximately 154 toothpicks are punchcut from each linear foot of veneer. Next they are dried for about 2 hours in a kiln and finally finished in a polishing drum filled with a small amount of powdered chalk or shaved paraffin which gets rid of any rough edges and gives them a bit of a glaze. Finally, they are boxed by machine and ready to go to market. 9
10 Beall 3-On Buffing System The Beall Three Buff System consists of three types of buffing wheels mounted on a single mandrel between centers making it easy to use any of the three buffs without having to mount or dismount the buffing wheel. System includes three 8" wheels, and No. 2 MT monting shaft, Tripoli compund, White Deamond compound, Carnauba Wax and instructions. Retails for $ w/tax. Extra bars of compound are included. This system was only used once on left wheel with Tripoli. Other two wheels are brand new and have never been used. Like New in box with instruction manual and extra compound $70.00 Call Bob Roehrig
