1 Huron Valley Woodturners 24 June 2012 Meeting Announcements Our July 2012 Meeting will be at 1 p.m. on Sunday 15 July Gary Smith will demonstrate his rose engine lathe, used for ornamental turning. This will be a treat. The Ann Arbor Art Fairs will be July (Wed. through Fri. 10am -9pm, and Saturday 10am - 6pm). Jeff Salter is participating in the South University Art Fair and will be in booth #180 on South University. Please stop by and see what he has to offer. Patrick McDaniel from Niles MI will demonstrate at our August meeting. Patrick makes museum quality wooden vases, vessels, sculptural pieces, and huge bowls. He has been working wood for over 35 years and is a self-taught woodturner (since 1986). He owns four lathes including an Oliver 25C pattern makers lathe. His one-of-a-kind pieces reflect a blending of thirty years of woodworking skill in various endeavors such as furniture, sculpture, and carving. Patrick will be participating in the Ann Arbor Street Art Fair located on and near the University of Michigan s Ingalls Mall. His booth (#A119) will be on E. Washington in front of the Rackham building. There are also several other well-known woodturners participating in this show (see and choose media type wood from the menu). 2 Well-known turner/educator Dave Hout spent the day giving us a great demo showing us the basics of metal-spinning, bowl-turning, and vacuum-chucking. Dave was the host of a popular woodturning show on the DIY network in 2003 & 2004 (see ). Dave started turning in the late 1960s, initially learning pattern maker methods, and later learning proper cutting techniques from the very influential Rude Osolnik (see Rude also taught Dave the spin metal. Our morning session was all about spinning an aluminum bowl. Dave talked about the history of metal spinning, as well as the materials and tools of the trade. He discussed in some detail the making of mandrels/forms, the spoon tool, the back-stick, and the tool rest. An abbreviated, but still worthwhile overview of the process can be seen at One highlight of the morning was when several members worked together to spin a bowl. This is made from cold-rolled steel by hammering the heated end to rough shape and refining on a grinder and polishing wheel.

5 The afternoon session of the Dave Hout demo began with a discussion of bowl turning techniques, holding methods, and various tools. Some particular items discussed and demonstrated were: the use of a special deburring and polishing wheel to round the heel of gouges to help avoid localized crushing of wood fibers; the Hout bowl skew ; how to make a very fine slicing cut with the handle trailing for the finish cut on bowl exteriors (something Jeff Salter has shown us also); proper lathe speed in rpm should satisfy the condition that the product (rpm)x(max workpiece diameter in inches) be a number in the range from 6000 to Dave also discussed various vacuum chucking methods and the associated apparatus. More pictures are below. The deburring and polishing wheel Dave uses a Norton 1-8SF (product nuber 55249); a 3M equivalent is the 3M Unitized wheel in either 7 or 9 density. This is mounted on a standard wheel mandrel that can be mounted on a motor shaft or held in a four-jaw chuck on the lathe. Wheels can be obtained from both msc.com and
