5 8.0 Procedure 8.1 Drill and tap a ½-13 hole as shown in Figure 1 (JHA-1). It is located on the South face of the center section. It is located to the west of the 10 th gusset from the east side of the telescope. Figure 1: 1/2-13 Hole in Center Section 8.2 Mount the Platform Support Assembly (2100-ME ) as shown in Figure 2 with one screw in the left end of the channel. Support the right end of the channel with the 5 ton dome crane. Position it so that it is level and its bottom edge is parallel with top of the center section (JHA-2). 6 8.3 Transfer-punch the two lower holes and match mark the 2 upper holes. Remove the 0270 from the telescope (JHA-3). 8.4 Lift the magnetic base drill using the 5 Ton dome crane. Drill and tap the remaining 4 holes in the center section (JHA-4). 8.5 Reinstall the 0270 on the telescope center section (JHA-5). 8.6 Install the South Support Leg (2100-ME ) that is shown in Figure 3 onto the 2100-ME as shown in Figure 4 (JHA-6). Roughly center it on the small platform (JHA-7). 8.8 Transfer punch the 3 mounting holes on the cass ramp. Move the 0271 away from the platform and drill three ½ in clearance holes. Counter sink the holes to accept flat head bolts (JHA-8) AD Page 6 of 9

7 8.9 Mount the 0271 assembly on to the platform and adjust the leveling screws until the platform is level (JHA-9) Lift the Main Frame (2100-ME ) as shown in Figure 5 with the 5 Ton dome crane. Position the frame over the 2 ends just installed (JHA-10). Figure 5: 2100-ME Install 1 bolt in either end. Install the L Angle brackets (2100-ME ) (JHA- 11) One will mount to the round tube and the other one will mount to the elliptical tube. Mark the locations for the mounting holes. Figure 6: 2100-ME The 0296 may have to be lifted to drill and tap the ½-13 in mounting holes (JHA-12) AD Page 7 of 9

8 8.14 Lower the 0296 back onto the end frames. Loosely install the mounting bolts for both ends. Once all the bolts are in the mounting holes, the bolts can be tightened (JHA- 13) Install the precut plywood sheets for the platform floor (JHA-14): 2100-ME ME ME ME ME Assemble the West Handrail per Figure 6 (JHA-15). The Hollaender parts can be found in room 205 and the pier room. The 3 vertical tubes are 39-3/8 in long. The 2 lower hand rails are 56-5/8 in long. The upper rail is 115-5/8 in long. Figure 7: West Handrail 8.17 Lift the hand rail assembly over the platform using the 5 Ton dome crane. Center it on the West rail and transfer-punch the mounting holes (JHA-16) Move the handrails to the West to allow clearance to drill the mounting holes (JHA- 17) Drill the holes with a 15/32 in drill. Mount the rail using McMaster-Carr 94077A205 self-tapping screws (JHA-18) Assemble the South handrail with the West vertical being 38-7/8 in long and the East vertical being 39-3/8 in long (JHA-19). See Figure Attach the McMaster-Carr self-closing door (4073K15) as shown in Figure 7 (JHA-20) AD Page 8 of 9

9 Figure 8: South Rail with Self-Closing Door 8.22 Set the assembly in place, leaving enough room for the self-closing door to operate correctly. Match mark the 6 mounting holes Drill the 2 holes in the rail with 15/32 in drill.
