1 SECTION WOOD LABORATORY CASEWORK PART 1 - GENERAL 1.1 RELATED DOCUMENTS A. Drawings and general provisions of the Contract, including General and Supplementary Conditions and Division 1 Specification Sections, apply to this Section. 1.2 SECTION INCLUDES A. Wood laboratory casework. B. Epoxy countertops and sinks. C. Utility-space framing at backs of base cabinets and between backs of base cabinets. D. Utility-space closure panels between base cabinets and at exposed ends of utility spaces. E. Accessories including drying racks, tackable surfaces, and countertop support panels. F. Adjustable metal tables. 1.3 RELATED SECTIONS A. Section Laboratory Fume Hoods: Fume hoods, including base cabinets and countertops under fume hoods. 1.4 DEFINITIONS A. Exposed Portions of Casework: Surfaces visible when doors and drawers are closed, including bottoms of cabinets more than 48 inches (1200 mm) above floor, and visible surfaces in open cabinets or behind glass doors. 1. Ends of cabinets indicated to be installed directly against and completely concealed by walls or other cabinets after installation shall not be considered exposed. B. Semiexposed Portions of Casework: Surfaces behind opaque doors, such as interiors of cabinets, shelves, dividers, interiors and sides of drawers, and interior faces of doors. Tops of cases 78 inches (1980 mm) or more above floor are defined as semiexposed. C. Concealed portions of casework include sleepers, web frames, dust panels, and other surfaces not usually visible after installation. 1.5 SUBMITTALS A. 2 B. Shop Drawings: For wood laboratory casework. Include plans, elevations, sections, details, and attachments to other work. 1. Scale: 1/2" = 1'-0". 2. Use the same numbering designations used on the Drawings to identify casework components. 3. Indicate locations of blocking and reinforcements required for installing laboratory casework. 4. Indicate locations and types of service fittings, together with associated service supply connection required. 5. Indicate finishes, and finish hardware type and locations. 6. Include details of utility spaces showing supports for conduits and piping. 7. Include details of exposed conduits, if required, for service fittings. 8. Indicate locations of and clearances from adjacent walls, doors, windows, other building components, and other laboratory equipment. 9. Include coordinated dimensions for laboratory equipment specified in other Sections. a. Note work to be performed by other trades, including adjacent and abutting materials to which this work is to be secured. 10. Indicate method of seismic construction by WI-Seismic Test Codes Number. 11. Stamp each set of shop drawings with a WI Certified Compliance Label on the first page. 12. Obtain approval of the casework shop drawings from related trades (as evidenced by their stamp and signature thereon) before submitting shop drawings to the Architect. C. Samples for Verification: For each type of finish, including countertop material, in manufacturer's standard sizes. 1. Plastic laminates, 8 by 10 inches (200 by 250 mm), for each type, color, pattern, and surface finish, with 1 sample applied to core material and specified edge material applied to 1 edge. 2. Thermoset decorative-panels, 8 by 10 inches (200 by 250 mm), for each type, color, pattern, and surface finish. 3. One 24-inch square sample of the specified wood specie, finish for each type of millwork material required. Prepare samples for final approval from the same material to be used for the Work inch- (150-mm-) square Samples for each type of countertop material. D. Calculations: For the cantilevered shelf system, signed and stamped by a structural engineer licensed in the State of California. E. Woodwork Quality Standard Compliance Certificates: WI-certified compliance certificates. F. Qualification Data: For casework fabricator. G. Product Test Reports: Based on evaluation of comprehensive tests performed by a qualified testing agency, indicating compliance of laboratory casework finishes and countertops with requirements specified for chemical and physical resistance. 3 1. Product Data, including Drawings and descriptions of products, fabrication and installation procedures. 2. Samples, where applicable or requested. 3. Quality Level: A side-by-side comparison of significant qualities of the equivalent with those specified. 4. A list of changes or modifications needed to other parts of the Work and to construction performed by the Owner and separate Contractors that will be necessary to accommodate the equivalent. 5. Cost information, including a proposal of the net change, if any in the Contract Sum. 6. Certification that the equivalent is equal-to or better in every respect to that required by Contract Documents, and that it will perform adequately in application indicated. 1.6 QUALITY ASSURANCE A. Manufacturer Qualifications: Provide substantiating data to show that the manufacturer has the qualifications, experience and reputation for fabricating quality laboratory casework in a timely manner for installations similar to that specified in this section. 1. Experience: Firm with no less than 5 years of production experience similar to this Project, whose qualifications indicate the ability to comply with the requirements of this Section. 2. Manufacturer must have at least one project in the past 5 years where the value of the woodwork was within 20 percent of the cost of woodwork for this Project. B. Installer Qualifications: 1. Firm certified by WI under their "Certified Installer Program", or millwork manufacturer, or; 2. Firm specializing in custom millwork with 5 years experience in installation of custom laboratory casework similar to that required for this Project. C. Source Limitations: Obtain laboratory casework, including countertops, and accessories, through one source from a single manufacturer. D. Engineering Responsibilities: Engineer, fabricate and install cantilevered shelf system to conform to the profiles indicated and other requirements of the Contract Documents, and to satisfy applicable codes. 1. These connections shall not cause torsional stresses in supporting members. 2. Provide seismic anchorages in accordance with CCR Title 24, Part 2. E. Product Designations: Drawings indicate sizes and configurations of laboratory casework by referencing designated casework numbers. F. Wood Product Quality Standards: 1. Softwood lumber standards: NIFT PS 20 and applicable grading rules of the respective grading and inspecting agency for the species and product specified. 2. 4 G. Product Standards: Comply with the following: 1. SEFA 3, Work Surfaces. 2. SEFA 8, "Laboratory Furniture--Casework, Shelving and Tables--Recommended Practices." H. AWS Quality Standard: Comply with the specified grade(s) of interior architectural woodwork indicated for construction, finishes, and installation, specified section(s), and applicable requirements of the current edition of the "Architectural Woodwork Standards" by AWI and WI. 1. Provide WI-certified compliance labels and certificates indicating that woodwork, including installation, complies with requirements of grades specified. 2. Fabricate and install laboratory casework in accordance with the standard established in the Architectural Woodwork Standards as adopted by the Woodwork Institute (WI) in the laboratory grade specified herein. 3. Before delivery to the jobsite, issue a WI Compliance Certificate indicating that the work to be furnished will comply with all WI requirements for the grade specified. 4. Affix the WI Certified Compliance Label to each elevation of laboratory casework and laboratory countertop indicating that it conforms to the grade specified. 5. If questions arise as to compliance with the reference standard of any item of work, the Owner may require reinspection of the questioned items as defined by "Reinspection Procedure" of Section 1 - General Information, of the WI Manual of Millwork. Cost of reinspection, should non-compliance be found, shall be paid by the Contractor. 6. If the manufacturer of casework is not a WI licensee, furnish to the Architect, prior to installation, a Certificate of Reinspection by the WI indicating that the casework in question meets the requirements of the WI grade specified. 7. If the manufacturer of the casework is a WI licensee, each unit of casework shall bear the WI Certified Compliance grade stamp indicating the grade specified. 8. The forgoing shall not be construed to limit the power and authority of the Architect to reject any casework which does not, in the Owner Representative s opinion, meet with any one or more of the specifications of this contract. 9. If the fabricator/supplier/installer is not a WI licensee, the fabricator/supplier/installer shall arrange and pay for all necessary inspections required by WI to comply with the above requirements. Certified Compliance Labels shall be affixed by the WI Director of Architectural Services (DAS/Inspector). I. Preinstallation Conference: Conduct conference at Project site to comply with requirements in Division 1 Section "Project Meetings." 1.7 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING A. Procedures: Follow recommendations of WI Manual of Practice, Section 1, Part 11 "Care and Storage of Architectural Woodwork". B. Protect finished surfaces during handling and installation with protective covering of polyethylene film or other suitable material. C. Storage: Store casework in original undamaged protective wrapping, set flat, blocked off ground to prevent sagging and warping. 5 1.8 PROJECT CONDITIONS A. Environmental Limitations: Do not deliver or install wood laboratory casework until building is enclosed, wet work and utility roughing-in are complete, and HVAC system is operating and maintaining temperature and relative humidity at occupancy levels during the remainder of the construction period. 1.9 COORDINATION A. Coordinate layout and installation of framing and reinforcements for support of wood laboratory casework. B. Coordinate installation of wood laboratory casework with installation of fume hoods and other laboratory equipment EXTRA MATERIALS A. Furnish complete touchup kit for each type and color of wood laboratory casework provided. Include scratch fillers, stains, finishes, and other materials necessary to perform permanent repairs to damaged laboratory casework finish. PART 2 - PRODUCTS 2.1 MANUFACTURERS A. Basis-of-Design Product: The design for the laboratory casework is based on the manufacturer identified below. Product requirements in this Section are based on products by the named manufacturer. Subject to compliance with requirements, provide the named product or an approved comparable system: 1. Basis-of-Design: Kawaunee Scientific Corporation, Signature Series, Contemporary Full Overlay, Style Accepted equivalent. 2.2 CABINET MATERIALS A. General: 1. Adhesives: Do not use adhesives that contain urea formaldehyde. 2. Maximum Moisture Content for Lumber: 7 percent for hardwood and 12 percent for softwood. 3. Hardwood Plywood: HPVA HP-1, either veneer core or particle core, unless otherwise indicated, made without urea formaldehyde. All plywood shall be hardwood plywood. Softwoods such as Fir or Pine are not permitted. a. Veneer core plywood shall be either 7-ply (3/4 ) or 9-ply (1 ) and shall be compliant with ANSI/HPVA HP b. Composition core plywood shall be 3-ply and shall be compliant with ANSI A , and/or ANSI A Medium-Density Fiberboard: ANSI A208.2, Grade MD, made with binder containing no urea formaldehyde. 100% Construction Documents Wood Laboratory Casework Revised November 16,

6 5. Edgebanding for Wood-Veneered Construction: Minimum 1/8-inch- (3-mm-) thick, solid wood of same species as face veneer. B. Exposed Materials: 1. General: Provide materials that are selected and arranged for compatible grain and color. Do not use materials adjacent to one another that are noticeably dissimilar in color, grain, figure, or natural character markings. 2. Hardwood Wood Species and Veneer Cut: Red Oak, plain sawn, HPVA Grade AA. Grade A, plain sliced, slip matched, Red Oak on face, and Grade 1, Red Oak on back. 3. Stain Colors and Finishes: As selected by Architect from manufacturer's full range. 4. Solid Wood: Clear hardwood lumber. 5. Plywood: Hardwood plywood; Grade A exposed faces at least 1/50 inch (0.5 mm) thick, Grade J crossbands, and backs of same species as faces. All plywood shall be hardwood plywood. Softwoods such as Fir or Pine are not permitted. a. Veneer core plywood shall be either 7-ply (3/4 ) or 9-ply (1 ) and shall be compliant with ANSI/HPVA HP b. Composition core plywood shall be 3-ply and shall be compliant with ANSI A , and/or ANSI A C. Semiexposed Materials: 1. Solid Wood: Sound hardwood lumber, selected to eliminate appearance defects, of same species as exposed solid wood. 2. Plywood: Hardwood plywood of any species similar in color and grain to exposed plywood. Grade B faces, Grade J crossbands, and backs of same species as faces. Semiexposed backs of plywood with exposed faces shall be same species as faces. 3. Thermoset Decorative Panels (Melamine): Particleboard or medium-density fiberboard finished with thermally fused, melamine-impregnated decorative paper complying with LMA SAT-1. a. Color: White unless indicated otherwise on Drawings. D. Concealed Materials: 1. Solid Wood: Any hardwood or softwood species, with no defects affecting strength or utility. 2. Plywood: Hardwood plywood. Concealed backs of plywood with exposed or semiexposed faces shall be same species as faces. 3. Particleboard. 4. Medium-density fiberboard. 5. Hardboard: AHA A135.4, Class 1 tempered. Hardboard shall be a wood fiber/resinous combination formed with heat and pressure into sheets providing a hard, smooth surface. E. Glass for Glazed Doors: Clear tempered glass complying with ASTM C1048, Kind FT, Condition A, Type I, Class 1, Quality q3; not less than 5.5 mm thick. 1/8 thick for framed sliding and swinging doors and 1/4 thick for unframed sliding doors. 7 2.3 CABINET DESIGN A. Design: Flush overlay. 1. AWS Grade: Premium. 2. Edge Banding: 1/8-inch thick hardwood. B. Grain Direction: Vertical on both doors and drawer fronts. 1. Matching: Vertical slip match, horizontal book match, filler panels and exterior exposed ends of base cabinets at end of benches to match CABINET FABRICATION A. Casework: Fabricate casework using flush overlay AWS Style A (frameless), Type II construction (single length section). B. Construction: Provide wood-faced laboratory casework of the following minimum construction: 1. Bottoms and Ends of Cabinets, Shelves, and Tops of Wall Cabinets and Tall Cabinets: 3/4-inch- (19-mm-) thick plywood. Red Oak. 2. Base Cabinet Top Frames: 3/4-by-2-inch (19-by-50-mm) solid wood Provide front rail, a back rail and two side rails with mortise and tenon or doweled connections, glued and pinned or screwed. a. Front Rail: 3-1/8" x 1" hardwood with 3mm Red Oak facing. b. Back Rail: 2-1/2" x 3/4" hardwood plywood. c. Side Rails: 1-3/4" x 3/4" hardwood and shall be screwed to end panels and front and back rails. d. Intermediate Rails: 3-1/4" x 3/4" hardwood plywood edge banded on exposed edge; multiple doweled and screwed to end panels; mounted at the front between the drawers and between all drawers and doors. 3. Backs of Cabinets: 3/4-inch- (19-mm-) thick plywood where exposed, 1/2-inch- (12.7-mm-) thick plywood dadoed into sides, bottoms, and tops where not exposed. 1/4" thick hardboard, dadoed into end panels and securely fastened to cabinet bottom and top back rail. Backs that are attached to end panels with cleats are unacceptable. 4. Drawer Fronts: 3/4-inch- (19-mm-) thick veneered plywood Red Oak, composite core plywood or solid hardwood. Drawer sub-fronts attached to drawer sides with a lock-tenon joint are unacceptable. 5. Drawer Sides and Backs: 1/2-inch- (12.7-mm-) thick solid wood, with glued dovetail. 9-ply Birch plywood 6. Drawer Bottoms: 1/4-inch- (6.4-mm-) thick, 5-ply hardwood, hot-glued and dadoed into front, back, and sides of drawers and blocked into place into 1/4" grooves, four sides. Use 1/2-inch- (12.7-mm-) thick material for drawers more than 24 inches (600 mm) wide.. 7. Swinging Doors 48 Inches (1200 mm) or Less in Height: 3/4 inch (19 mm) thick, with medium-density fiberboard cores, and hardwood face veneers and crossbands. 8 8. Swinging Doors More Than 48 Inches (1200 mm) in Height: 1-1/8 inches (29 mm) thick, with particleboard cores and hardwood face veneers and crossbands. Red Oak, composite core plywood edge banded on all four edges, mounted on cabinet with 1 pair of offset hinges and latched with a roller catch. 9. Sliding Doors: 3/4" thick, Red Oak, composite core plywood, edge banded on the vertical edges; suspended from adjustable hangers and glide on nylon rollers riding on a double extruded aluminum track attached to the top of the cabinet. Each door shall have one recessed pull. 10. File Drawers: 1/2-inch solid hardwood sides, dovetailed and glued; 1/2-inch, 5-ply hardwood bottom, fitted into dado, glued and blocked into place. 11. Filler Panels: 3/8-inch thick core with plastic laminate on both surfaces and edgebanding. Provide filler panels and pipe chase enclosure panels at exposed to view areas between back of cabinets and walls, between backs of cabinets at end of island or peninsula benches, and at any other area necessary to enclose gaps. a. Secure to frame and cabinet back and wall with metal angle and oval head screws with finishing washers. 12. End Panels and Back Panel: Recessed or flush, provided for all cabinets. 13. Stiles and Rails of Glazed Doors: 3/4-inch- (19-mm-) thick solid hardwood. 14. Cabinet Liner Plastic Laminate Grade: CLS. C. Special Purpose Base Cabinets: 1. Acid Storage Fume Hood Cabinet: Acid storage fume hood cabinets shall utilize the same materials and construction features as other base cabinets. In addition, they shall have a one piece liner insert made of linear low density polyethylene. The liner insert shall form a one-inch high pan at the bottom to retain spillage. The door shall be lined with a polyethylene sheet. Each cabinet shall be vented with a 1-1/2" vent pipe. It shall provide a positive airflow directly into the fume hood exhaust system. 2. Solvent (Flammable) Storage Cabinet: Solvent storage cabinets shall be constructed in accordance with OSHA, UL, and NFPA 30 standards. They shall meet the National Fire Protection Association, Flammable and Combustible Liquid Code and shall be UL listed with a UL label affixed to the inside of the cabinet door. Cabinet bottom, top, back, door(s) and sides shall be 1-inch exterior grade veneer core plywood. All joints shall be rabbetted and fastened in two directions with wood screws. Cabinet backs shall be removable for access to utility chase from inside the cabinet, and shall have two threaded, two-inch pipe vent outlets, with flame arrestors and capped for venting as required by local code. Doors shall be hinged with a pair of five-knuckle hinges, latched with a manual three-point latch, and shall overlap by 1 on cabinets with more than one door. The door sill shall be raised at least two inches above the cabinet bottom. Each cabinet shall include two, two-inch deep, removable liquid-tight, powder-coated steel pans to retain spills. One shall be at the bottom of the cabinet, the other mounted on adjustable shelf clips as a shelf. All solvent storage cabinets shall be marked with conspicuous, two-inch high lettering: FLAMMABLE KEEP FIRE AWAY. Wood Laboratory Casework 100% Construction Documents Revised November 16, 2012

9 D. Counter Mounted and Wall Mounted Cabinets: 1. Cabinet: All cabinet end panels shall be 3/4" thick Red Oak veneer core plywood edge banded on front and bottom edge. Tops and bottoms shall be 1" thick Red Oak veneer core plywood edge banded on exposed edge, multiple doweled into end panels, and secured with glue and countersunk screws. Shelves shall be 1 thick Red Oak veneer core plywood edge banded on exposed edge. Shelves shall be adjustable on 32mm centers utilizing shelf support clips. The backs in open and glazed door cases shall be 1/4" Red Oak composite or veneer core plywood while the back not exposed to view shall be 1/4" hardboard. Case interior shall be flush. 2. Swinging Doors: a. Door Construction: Panel doors shall be 3/4", Red Oak, composite core plywood edge banded on all four edges. Glazed doors shall have 3/4" x 3-3/16" Red Oak framing mortised, tenoned, and glued. Glass shall be set into door frame and secured with a plastic retainer. Each door shall have one pull mounted vertically. b. Door Mounting: Swinging doors shall be hung on 1 pair of offset hinges, under 48" in height, and 1-1/2 pair on cabinets 48" high. c. Door Latching: Doors shall latch with a roller catch. Double doors without locks shall have a roller catch on each door. Double doors with locks shall have an elbow catch mounted to the left-hand door and the lock and a roller catch mounted on the right-hand door. E. Full Height Storage Cabinets: 1. Cabinet: a. All cabinet end panels shall be 3/4" thick Red Oak veneer core plywood, edge banded on front edge. Tops shall be 1" thick Red Oak veneer core plywood, edge banded on exposed edge, multiple doweled into end panels, secured with glue and countersunk screws. Shelves shall be 1" thick Red Oak veneer core plywood, edge banded on exposed edge. To assure a completely rigid case, the center shelf shall be multiple doweled into end panels, secured with glue and countersunk screws. All other shelves shall be adjustable on 32mm centers utilizing shelf support clips. b. Cabinet bottoms shall be 3/4" thick Red Oak veneer core plywood, edge banded on exposed edge, multiple doweled and glued securely to end panels. A 3/4" x 4" hardwood veneer core plywood toe space rail on 22" deep cabinets shall be offset 3" from face to form a 4" high totally enclosed toe space. 12" and 16" deep cabinets shall have a 3/4" x 4" hardwood veneer core plywood toe space rail mounted flush with the face of the cabinet. The backs in open and glazed door cabinets shall be 1/4" Red Oak composite or veneer core plywood while the back not exposed to view shall be 1/4" hardboard. Cabinet interior shall be flush. 2. Doors: a. Sliding Doors: 1) Door Construction: Panel doors shall be 3/4" thick, Red Oak, composite core plywood, edge banded on the vertical edges. 10 tenoned, and glued. Glass shall be set into door frame and secured with a plastic retainer. Each door shall have one recessed pull. 2) Door Mounting: Sliding doors shall be suspended from adjustable hangers and glide on nylon rollers riding on a double extruded aluminum track attached to the cabinet top. b. Swinging Doors: 1) Door Construction: Panel doors shall be 3/4", Red Oak, composite core plywood edge banded on all four edges. Glazed doors shall have 3/4" x 3-3/16" Red Oak framing, mortised, tenoned, and glued. Glass shall be set into door frame and secured with a plastic retainer. Each door shall have one pull mounted vertically. 2) Door Mounting: Each door shall be hung on 1-1/2 pair of offset hinges. 3) Door Latching: Doors shall latch with a roller catch. Double doors without locks shall have a roller catch on each door. Double doors with locks shall have an elbow catch and Red Oak astragal mounted to the left-hand door and the lock and a roller catch mounted on the right-hand door. F. Leg Shoes: Stainless steel boots at base of legs, Type 316, open-bottom type. G. Vertical Supports: 2" x 2" tube steel as indicated on Drawings. H. Open-leg Tables: Hardwood core with Red Oak veneer, 2-1/2" square, with all corners radiused 1/32"; secured to the apron frame by a heavy duty corner bolt and a 14- gauge metal corner brace. Corner braces shall be locked into apron rails by accurately located grooves and shall be securely fastened with screws. This construction shall guarantee equal tension on all wood and metal parts. All apron rails exposed to view shall be 3/4" thick, solid Red Oak. Leg stretchers, where required, shall be 1-5/16" x 2-1/2", Red Oak, securely joined to the legs without visible fasteners. I. Base Molding: Coved sheet vinyl, 4 inches (100 mm) in height. Provide on fronts and exposed sides of floor-mounted laboratory casework. J. Filler Strips and Utility-Space Closure Panels: Provide as needed to close spaces between cabinets and walls, ceilings, and indicated equipment. Fabricate from same material and with same finish as cabinet fronts. 2.5 COUNTERTOPS AND SHELVES A. Countertops, General: Provide units with smooth surfaces in uniform plane free of defects. Make exposed edges and corners straight and uniformly beveled. Provide front and end overhang of 1 inch (25 mm), with continuous drip groove on underside 1/2 inch (13 mm) from edge. 1. Wood Shelves: Medium density fiberboard; ANSI A 208.2, 47 pcf density minimum, 115 psi internal bond, 4,400 psi modulus of rupture, water absorption 7 percent maximum, screw holding face 310 lb, screw holding edge 260 lb, without formaldehyde resins. Medite II by Sierra Pines, or equal, no known equal. 1. Core for Shelving: Classic Core by Columbia Forest Products, or equal, no known equal, voidless veneer hardwood plywood. a. Core for shelving spans up to 30 inches: 3/4 inch thick. b. Core for Shelving Spans of 30-inches to 42-inches: 1-inch thick. 2. Veneer: Maple. 3. Edge: Acrylic or hardwood to match top at laboratory shelves, other edges as indicated on Drawings. a. Edgeband: 1/8-inch, all edges, unless otherwise noted on Drawings. 4. Where exposed nailing is unavoidable, neatly set nails for putty stopping. 1. It is the Contractor s option to assemble cabinets with separate toe kicks/bases to facilitate scheduling opportunities. G. Finish Hardware: 1. Fit hardware accurately and install in compliance with the hardware manufacturer's printed instructions. Accurately fit doors and drawers with uniform clearance at all edges. 2. Doors and drawers shall operate freely, but not loosely, without sticking or binding, with all hardware adjusted and functioning properly. 3. Seal grommets to bench with silicone sealer FINISHING, GENERAL A. Match approved samples. In preparation for finish, clean casework and fill nail holes. Use matching wood filler where casework is to receive a transparent finish. B. Finish casework at the mill, smoothly dressed, belt-sanded and hand-sanded. Ensure that finish surfaces are free from open joints, hammer and machine marks, structural defects and surface blemishes. C. Backprime casework on all surfaces which will be concealed with one coat of wood primer. Schedule delivery to allow time for application and drying of backprime coat before installation of casework for those items that have not been backprimed in the shop WOOD FINISH A. Preparation: Sand lumber and plywood for laboratory casework construction before assembling. Sand edges of doors, drawer fronts, and molded shapes with profile-edge sander. Sand casework after assembling for uniform smoothness at least equivalent to that produced by 220 grit sanding and without machine marks, cross sanding, or other surface blemishes. B. Staining: Remove fibers and dust and apply stain to exposed and semiexposed surfaces as necessary to match approved Samples. Apply stain in a manner that will produce a consistent appearance. Apply wash-coat sealer before applying stain to closed-grain wood species. C. Chemical-Resistant Finish: Apply three-coat, chemical-resistant, transparent finish consisting of one coat of sanding sealer and two catalyzed vinyl topcoat(s). Sand and wipe clean between coats. 15 2. Chemical and Physical Resistance of Finish System: Finish complies with acceptance levels of cabinet surface finish tests in SEFA 8. Acceptance level for chemical spot test shall be no more than four Level 3 conditions. PART 3 - EXECUTION 3.1 EXAMINATION A. Examine areas, with Installer present, for compliance with requirements for installation tolerances, location of reinforcements, and other conditions affecting performance of wood laboratory casework. 1. Proceed with installation only after unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected. 3.2 INSTALLATION OF CABINETS A. Install casework to comply with WI Section 15 for same grade specified in Part 2 of this section for type of cabinets involved. B. Install level, plumb, and true; shim as required, using concealed shims. Where laboratory casework abuts other finished work, apply filler strips and scribe for accurate fit, with fasteners concealed where practical. C. Utility-Space Framing: Secure to floor with two fasteners at each frame. Fasten to partition framing, wood blocking, or metal reinforcements in partitions and to base cabinets. D. Base Cabinets: Adjust top rails and subtops within 1/16 inch (1.5 mm) of a single plane. Fasten cabinets to utility-space framing, partition framing, wood blocking, or reinforcements in partitions with fasteners spaced not more than 24 inches (600 mm) oc. Fasten adjacent cabinets together with joints flush, tight, and uniform. Align similar adjoining doors and drawers to a tolerance of 1/16 inch (1.5 mm). 1. Where base cabinets are installed away from walls, fasten to floor at toe space at not more than 24 inches (600 mm) oc and at sides of cabinets with not less than 2 fasteners per side. E. Wall Cabinets: Adjust fronts and bottoms within 1/16 inch (1.5 mm) of a single plane. Fasten to hanging strips, masonry, partition framing, blocking, or reinforcements in partitions. Fasten each cabinet through back, near top, at not less than 24 inches (600 mm) oc. Align similar adjoining doors to a tolerance of 1/16 inch (1.5 mm). F. Install hardware uniformly and precisely. Set hinges snug and flat in mortises. G. Adjust laboratory casework and hardware so doors and drawers align and operate smoothly without warp or bind and contact points meet accurately. 16 3.3 INSTALLATION OF COUNTERTOPS A. Install countertops to comply with WI Section 18 for same grade specified in Part 2 of this section for type of countertops involved. B. Abut top and edge surfaces in one true plane with flush hairline joints and with internal supports placed to prevent deflection. Locate joints only where shown on Shop Drawings. C. Field Jointing: Where possible, make in the same manner as shop jointing using dowels, splines, adhesives, and fasteners recommended by manufacturer. Prepare edges to be joined in shop. 1. Use concealed clamping devices for field joints in plastic-laminate countertops. Locate clamping devices within 6 inches (150 mm) of front and back edges and at intervals not exceeding 24 inches (600 mm). Tighten according to manufacturer's written instructions to exert a uniform heavy pressure at joints. D. Fastening: 1. Secure countertops to cabinets with Z-type fasteners or equivalent, using two or more fasteners at each cabinet front, end, and back. 2. Where necessary to penetrate countertops with fasteners, countersink heads approximately 1/8 inch (3 mm) and plug hole flush with material equal to countertop in chemical resistance, hardness, and appearance. E. Provide required holes and cutouts for service fittings. F. Provide scribe moldings for closures at junctures of countertop, curb, and splash, with walls as recommended by manufacturer for materials involved. Match materials and finish to adjacent laboratory casework. Use chemical-resistant, permanently elastic sealing compound where recommended by manufacturer. G. Carefully dress joints smooth, remove surface scratches, and clean entire surface. H. Seal top of splash to all intersecting surfaces, including, but not limited to, painted gypsum board, metal panels and fume hoods. 3.4 INSTALLATION OF ACCESSORIES A. Install accessories according to Shop Drawings and manufacturer's written instructions. B. Securely fasten adjustable shelving supports, stainless-steel shelves, and pegboards to partition framing, wood blocking, or reinforcements in partitions. C. Install shelf standards plumb and at heights to align shelf brackets for level shelves. Install shelving level and straight, closely fitted to other work where indicated. 3.5 CLEANING AND PROTECTING A. Clean finished surfaces, touch up as required, and remove or refinish damaged or soiled areas to match original factory finish, as approved by Architect.
