Module 5 exercises: not for assessment Section 1 Preparation for using Power Tools a. ALWAYS USE THE RIGHT POWER TOOL FOR THE RIGHT JOB IN THE RIGHT WAY This is a Golden Rule why? What are the hazards of using the wrong tool? 1. Could damage the workpiece? How? (give an example) Could char it if tool not powerful enough or blade is blunt/cut might be rough if wrong blade is used 2. Could injure the user? How? (give an example) Excess pressure might be used, causing the tool to slip/blade might shatter 3. Could damage the tool? How? (give an example) Could burn out motor of underpowered tool/blunt the blade b. EXTENSION LEADS: WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO SELECT THE CORRECT LEAD? If you need to use an extension lead, you must consider these issues: 1. Why consider wattage of a tool before using an extension lead? To ensure the extension lead can cope with the electrical load 2. Why plug it into an RCD? So the electricity will be shut off at a lower wattage in the event of an incident, lowering the risk of a severe shock 3. Why should an extension lead be fully unwound before use? To avoid the build up of heat which will lower the flow of electricity to the tool (potentially damaging it) and becoming a fire risk 4. What is wrong with using a lead with damaged cable insulation? Could be a risk of electrical injury or tool may cut out Module Answers 9

Section 2 Using Specific Power Tools: A Safety Checklist a. IDENTIFY THE RIGHT PPE TO USE Carefully consider what protective equipment is to be used whilst using the chopsaw. Circle the 4 pieces of PPE you would need: These 4 should be circled by the Trainee: Steel-toe boots Safety glasses/goggles Ear defenders Dust mask b. IDENTIFYING GUARDS/SAFETY DEVICES THAT ARE PART OF THIS TOOL OR THAT SHOULD BE USED WITH IT State what guards/safety devices there are and need checking that they work properly: Blade guard Double trigger Workpiece clamp c. UNDERSTANDING HOW TO MOUNT THE WORKPIECE SAFELY How could the workpiece move whilst being cut and does the chopsaw have built-in parts to help with mounting or securing the workpiece? 1. How could the workpiece move if not secured? Could fly off bed of machine 2. How should the workpiece be secured/positioned on the tool? Firmly bedded against the rests and use clamp if provided on machine Module Answers 10

d. HOW TO PREPARE TO USE THE TOOL How to position yourself, hold, start and turn off the chopsaw: 1. How should you stand? Balanced with legs shoulder width apart, one leg in front of the other 2. How should you hold the tool? Firm grip on handle keeping other hand on the workpiece but away from blade area 3. How do you start and stop the tool? Gentle pressure on the trigger whilst at the same time as releasing guard button. Release trigger and move chopsaw away from workpiece e. HOW COULD THE TOOL HURT YOU IF INCORRECTLY USED? Can it: 1. Cut you how? If fingers or hands get under the spinning blade 2. Burn you how? Touching the blade which will become hot after repeated use 3. Hit you with dust/fragments (particularly in the eyes) how? Not having machine connected to a bag or extraction system 4. Trip you up how? Trip over lead whilst retrieving timber 5. What other ways can it hurt you? Chopsaw can severely jolt if the blade gets stuck in a workpiece too large for the blade Module Answers 11

f. MAINTAINTING THE SAW What if any maintenance can be carried out by the user on the chopsaw? 1. Can the blades be sharpened? No, only by sending away to a specialist 2. Can the blades be changed? Yes, but only with correct tool 3. Can bearings be oiled/replaced? No, only by sending away to a specialist 4. Any other maintenance by the user? If not, why? No, it might be used by someone untrained 2. When can the tool be considered safe? When it is safely stored away 3. How do you prepare the tool for storage? Clean away fragments and dust/lock into closed position/ensure cable is wound Module Answers 12

Module 5 Exercise 1: for assessment 1. Briefly, what are things to consider whilst getting ready to use the chopsaw? Is the chopsaw the right tool for the job? Are you trained and authorized to use? Have you got the correct PPE? Have you checked the tool for damage? Is it safe to start and complete the job (no distractions/interruptions)? 2. Briefly, how can you help make your work area safe? Ensure the area is clean and dry with sufficient light Ensure there is sufficient space in which to work Ensure it is safe for others is there a barrier between you and others? Ensure the noise or dust won t disturb other people Ensure you have a stable workbench or table from which to work Check for any trip/slip hazards 3. What PPE is needed when using the chopsaw? 4. How can you help reduce the risk of electric shock when using the chopsaw? Steel-toe boots; Eye protection; Ear protection Dust mask; Gloves (optional) Do not using tools outside or in damp conditions Do not use tools with damaged leads/wires showing Do not use damaged tools Do not use without an RCD socket 5. What are the main risks to health and safety of using the chopsaw? 6. How do you reduce the main risks to health and safety of using the chopsaw? Fragments/dust in eyes; noise damage to hearing; cutting fingers/hand; breathing in dust; hit by flying workpiece Always use appropriate PPE; don t use if unauthorized; check tool for damage; use good technique; clamp workpiece; check leads/plugs for damage; check blade is sharp Module Answers 13
