1 Right On Replicas, LLC Step-by-Step Review * 1959 Chevy Impala Hard Top 2 n 1 1:25 Scale Revell Model Kit # Review Review and Photos by James Yeager 1959 Chevy was the second year of production for the Chevy Impala.. The Impala was originally introduced in 1958 and for 1959 the Impala was totally restyled to capture people s attention. It still does today and is a favorite of car enthusiasts worldwide. Sporting unusual horizontal tailfins, a vista view roof, and dual radio antennae, it garners double takes wherever it goes. For 1959 the Impala was longer, lower, wider in keeping in keeping with the prevailing styling theme and the restyling worked making the 1959 Impala number one in the sales department. For the modeler: This review covers the Revel 1:25 scale Kit # ; 1959 Chevy Impala Hard Top 2 n 1 from the California Wheels Series. The kit includes 165 parts molded in molded in molded in white, chrome, clear, clear red, soft black tires and waterslide decals. Revell rates this kit a skill level 3 for the advanced builder. Although this model has been reissued at least a half-dozen times; it s always welcomed by the modeling community. The kit features complete stock or custom versions with a detailed 348 cid V-8 and continental spare tire kit. Overall completed dimensions are Length: 8-5/8", Width: 3-1/8", Height: 2-3/16".

2 Fig 0a & 0b Here is the kit s contents and box art. Unless stated differently Testors Model Cement in the tube and Testors Enamel paint in the bottle was used for the construction of this model kit. Figure 2500 The left engine half is glued to the right engine half then the left and right cylinder heads are glued to the engine assembly. The rocker covers are glued to the cylinder heads and the water pump is glued to the engine assembly. The engine assembly and the intake manifold are painted Testors Orange. The intake manifold is glued to the engine assembly. The starter is painted Testors Semi Gloss Black then glued to the right engine half. The fuel pump is painted Testors Steel before it is glued to the right engine half. The oil filter is painted Testors Gloss White, Decal 7 is applied to the oil filter and then the oil filter is glued to the left engine half. Figure 2501 and Figure 2502 Pictures of the engine after being assembled and painted. Figure 2503 The air cleaner cover, air cleaner bottom, oil filler tube, generator, power steering pump and fan are painted Testors Semi Gloss Black. The left and right exhaust manifolds are painted Testors Steel. The distributor is painted Testors Flat Black.

3 Figure 2504 and Figure 2505 The carburetor, oil filler tube, and distributor are glued to the intake manifold of the engine assembly. The air cleaner cover is attached to the air cleaner bottom and then the air cleaner assembly is glued to the carburetor. The left and right exhaust manifolds are glued to the left and right cylinder heads on the engine assembly. The power steering pump is attached to the generator and the generator assembly is secured to the fan belt. The fan is attached to the fan belt assembly and then the fan belt assembly is glued to the water pump and the engine assembly. Figure 2506 The left coil spring mount, right coil spring mount, right upper A arm, left upper A arm and chassis are painted Testors Semi Gloss Black.

4 Figure 2507 The left upper A arm is attached to the left coil spring mount and then the left coil spring mount assembly is glued to the chassis. The right upper A arm is attached to the right coil spring mount and then the right coil spring mount assembly is glued to the chassis. Figure 2508 The steering gear box is painted Testors Steel and glued to the left engine bay of the chassis. The engine is installed into the chassis assembly. There is an optional front suspension that is shown in Figure 2542 for the custom version. The front suspension, both front coil springs and both rear coil springs are painted Testors Semi Gloss Black. The front coil springs are installed into the chassis and then the stock front suspension is attached to the chassis and the front coil springs. The rear coil springs are glued to the chassis. The left and right exhausts are painted Testors Aluminum and Testors Steel.

5 Figure 2509 The left and right exhausts are installed onto the chassis assembly. There are custom exhaust pipes (Figure 2542) that are not mentioned until Step 15 as well. Figure 2510 and Figure 2511 The rear axle, differential, both rear shocks, control arm, and rear stabilizer bar are painted Testors Semi Gloss Black. The driveshaft is painted Testors Steel. There is an optional custom rear axle that is shown in Figure 2542 that can be used. The differential is attached to the stock rear axle and the rear axle assembly is glued to the chassis. Both rear shocks are attached to the chassis and both ends of the rear axle assembly. The driveshaft is slid through the chassis with one end being attached to the transmission and the other end is attached to the differential. The control arm is glued to the chassis and the rear axle assembly. The rear stabilizer bar is glued to the chassis and the rear axle assembly.

6 Figure 2512 and Figure 2513 The radiator shroud is spray painted Testors Gloss White. The radiator, battery, and lower radiator hose are painted Testors Flat Black. The radiator shroud is painted Testors Semi Gloss Black. The upper radiator hose is painted Testors Flat Black with detail that is painted Testors Steel. The battery is attached to the radiator wall. Decal 9 is applied to the battery. The radiator shroud is attached to the radiator and then the radiator assembly is glued to the radiator wall. The radiator wall assembly is installed into the chassis assembly. The lower radiator hose is glued to the radiator and the engine assembly. The upper radiator hose is glued to the radiator and the intake manifold. Figure 2514 The inner wheels are painted Testors Flat Black and the white wall inserts are spray painted Testors Gloss White. The following assembly is done four times for all four tires. The inner wheel is installed into the back of the tires. The white wall insert is installed into the front of the tire then the hub cap is installed into the front of the tire and glued to the inner wheel. There is an option to use hub cap spinners for the stock wheels however I did not use them. There is also an option to use custom hub caps (Figure 2542). Decals 11 (2 each) are applied to the left side hub caps and Decals 14 (2 each) are applied to the right side hub caps. Decals 21 (4 each) are applied to all four hubcaps. The tire assemblies are installed onto the chassis assembly.

Figure 2517 There is a custom interior assembly (Figure 2543) and a stock interior assembly (seen in figure 2517 to Figure 2519). The bench seat and bench seat back are painted Testors Gloss Turquoise. The interior is painted Testors Gloss Turquoise and Testors Flat Black. The right and left interior sides are painted Testors Gloss Turquoise and some detail is painted Testors Silver and Testors Flat Black. The bench seat back is attached to the bench seat and then the bench seat assembly is installed into the interior. The right and left interior sides are installed onto the interior. The rear seat speaker is attached to the interior.

8 Figure 2518 and Figure 2519 Decals; 26 and 27 (right side) and Decals; 28 and 29 (left side) are applied to the front bench seat assembly. Decals; 22 and 23 (right side) and Decal; 24 and 25 (left side) are applied to the back bench seat. Figure 2520 The firewall and dashboard are spray painted Testors Gloss White. The pedals are painted Testors Flat Black and the coil is painted Testors Semi Gloss Black. The master cylinder is painted Testors Steel. The washer fluid tank is painted Testors Gloss White and Testors Semi Gloss Black. The steering column is painted Testors Gloss White, Testors Silver, and Testors Semi Gloss Black. The steering wheel is painted Testors Gloss White and Testors Steel. Figure 2521 and Figure 2522 The pedals are glued to the interior side of the firewall. The coil, wiper motor, master cylinder, and washer fluid tank are glued to the exterior side of the firewall. The firewall assembly is attached to the interior assembly. The following decals are applied to the dashboard; Decals 1,2,3,4, and 5 then the steering column is installed onto the dashboard. The steering wheel is attached to the steering column and Decal 13 is applied to the steering wheel. The right and left dash bottoms are glued to the dashboard. Decal 6 is applied to the right dash bottom. The dashboard assembly is installed into the interior assembly.

9 Figure 2523 The body is first spray painted Testors Gloss White and then it is taped off to be spray painted Model Master Turquoise Metallic. The body is then detailed with Testors Silver. The interior ceiling is painted Testors Gloss Turquoise. Figure 2524 The windshield, rear window, and interior lights are installed into the body with Testors Clear Parts Cement & Window Maker. The rear view mirror is glued to the windshield with Testors Clear Parts Cement & Window Maker.

11 Figure 2528 The interior assembly is installed into the body assembly. The chassis assembly is installed into the body assembly and glued to the interior assembly. Figure 2529 The heater hoses are attached to the firewall and to the engine assembly. The horns are attached to the body by the grille area.

12 Figure 2530 There is an option for a custom grille (Figure 2542) as well as the stock grille (Figure 2530). The headlights are glued into the grille with Testors Clear Parts Cement & Window Maker. The grille assembly will then be glued into the body assembly. Figure 2531 The right and left intake eyebrows have detail that is painted Tamiya Acrylic Clear Orange before they are installed into the body. The front bumper is attached to the body. The left taillight is glued to the left tail light bezel with Testors Clear Parts Cement & Window Maker and then the taillight assembly is glued to the body. The right taillight is glued to the right taillight bezel with Testors Clear Parts Cement & Window Maker and then the taillight assembly is glued to the body. I chose to use the custom rear bumper for this build so the spare tire cover is first spray painted Model Master Turquoise Metallic and detailed with Testors Silver. The spare tire is spray painted with Model Master Turquoise Metallic then brush painted with Testors Gloss White, Testors Flat Black and Testors Steel. The left and right bumper supports are painted Testors Gloss White. The spare tire cover is attached to the spare tire and then the assembly is glued to the custom rear bumper. The left and right bumper supports are glued to the custom rear bumper. The custom rear bumper is installed onto the body and then the license plate is attached to the custom rear bumper.

13 Figure 2532 The left and right fender skirts are spray painted Testors Gloss White and installed onto the body. The left front body molding, left rear body molding, and left door handle are installed onto the body. The side mirror is attached to the mirror stem and the mirror assembly is glued to the body. The right front body molding, right rear body molding, and right door handle are installed onto the body. Figure 2533 and Figure 2534 Here is the car after the exterior parts in Figure 2530, Figure 2531, and Figure 2532 are added to it. I think the spare tire really adds more character to an already awesome car.

14 Figure 2535 The hood is spray painted Testors Gloss White and detailed with Testors Flat Black. The left and right hood hinges are glued to the hood. The right and left eyebrow moldings are also glued to the hood. The fender ornaments are attached to each of the front fenders. The left and right windshield wipers are installed onto the car and then both antennas are glued to the rear of the car. Figure 2536 and Figure 2537 Here is what the hood looks like after the hood hinges and the eyebrow moldings are attached to it. Figure 2538 Here is what the car will look like once the hood is installed onto it.

15 Figure 2540 Here are the trim pieces to add next. The antennae, hood bullets and wipers. Figure 2541 In this figure there is a good view of the windshield wipers and fender ornaments. Figure 2542 here are the following extra parts and the steps they are mentioned in; custom front suspension Step 4, custom rear axle Step 5, custom hub caps Step 8, hub cap spinners Step 8, custom grille Step 13,spot lights and spot light lenses Step 15, left and right lake pipes Step 15. A side note on the left and right lake pipes they are not mentioned in Step b4 when the stock exhaust pipes are discussed for the build they appear in Step 15 towards the completion of the kit.

16 Figure 2543 The custom interior that is discussed in Step 9 consists of; a custom bench seat, custom bench seat back, custom interior, custom left and right interior sides. Figure 2544 In Step 14 the extra parts are; the custom front bumper, left intake eyebrow, right intake eyebrow, right custom taillight, left custom taillight and the stock rear bumper. There was even some extra parts that are not even listed in the parts annex of the instructions and they are; a windshield frame, right door window frame, left door window frame and what looks like sun visors.

17 Figure 2547 Here is the kit completed with the hood in the down position; however with the hood hinges installed the hood does not sit flush in the down position. This kit looks great with the hood up or down. Figure 9999 I think this kit was really fun to build and would look great as the custom version as well. I will definitely have to pick up another one of these 59 Impalas just so I can build the custom version. There was no pin marks, sink holes, warpage and very little if any flash that needed fixed on this kit. On a scale of 1 to 10 I think this kit would be between 9.5 and a 10.
