3 Executive Summary: Non-professional tournaments are becoming more and more popular throughout the United States, but there is currently not an effective way to keep score electronically. This is where the Multi-Sport LED Scoreboard would come into effect. The Multi-Sport LED Scoreboard, here after referred to as the scoreboard, will provide a low cost, electronic scoreboard that coaches and officials working for intramural leagues or recreation leagues all throughout the United States will be able to use. Objective: Our objective it to design this scoreboard, paired with a smartphone application and a remote, that aid in these small scale tournaments and athletic events. In order for the scoreboard to be effective, it needs to be affordable, portable, and versatile (in terms of both the sports it can accommodate and how it can be controlled). Need Statement: As stated in the objective above, the biggest need is to develop a cost effective scoreboard (preferably with a parts cost of $300) that will be used for recreational tournaments, intramural games, and also small scale competitive games. With so many different games being played, the scoreboard must also have different scoreboard configurations to accommodate for sports such as: basketball, volleyball, tennis, baseball, or football. This scoreboard will need to be set up in a portable container that can easily be transported and also very durable because of the ever pending issue of someone not treating the equipment properly or a piece of equipment from the game being spectated hitting the device. On top of all of this, making the device wirelessly controlled is a definite requirement for today s society. The scoreboard will be controlled wirelessly by either using a laptop, tablet or a smartphone when available; otherwise a controller will be provided in lieu of these pieces of technology.

6 Systems Description: Overall the scoreboard we are constructing will be used for, ideally, multiple recreational sports leagues throughout the country. The reason for its potential success is because of how the system is set up. The system will have multiple different ways for controlling the scoreboard, while still being light weight and portable enough for it to be used at many different events throughout the reaches of the sporting league. Another big bonus is that the scoreboard can be used as a scoreboard for not just one specific sport but for a multitude of sports that could be held. Multi-Sport Scoreboard: The Multi-Sport scoreboard part of the project will be the most prestigious for the team because of the size it will have when completed. In all this board will have to include a 64 or a 128 pin microprocessor to run the device that has the ability to interpret a Bluetooth protocol of the teams choosing. This microprocessor will then be the brain to the device controlling all of the seven segment displays and individual LED s. This task will be completed by using seven segment drivers which read binary and translate it to the pins on the seven segment display. This board will also interpret what type of board is currently being used, i.e. which sport is being played. This will primarily be controlled by the laptop or tablet. Remote Control: The remote control will be the smallest physical thing that is handed in. The remote is going to be a small device which has minimalist s controls by only being able to add 1 or subtract 1 from the scoreboard, start and stop time, and choose the sport. The primary controller for this would be the laptop or the tablet because of the variable control which is available, but functionality will be just as useable with the remote control as well. Mobile Application: The mobile application will be a way of controlling the device. The graphical user interface (GUI) will have an image of the scoreboard as it will be shown on the actual scoreboard itself. This image will also have different button patterns depending on which sport is available, for instance if basketball is being played, it will have an add 1, 2, or 3 and a minus 1 button which are used for changing the score. It will also include control over the time with a start time and stop time button, the time outs and quarters with a Piezo buzzer. It will also have a drop down menu at the top to pick between the sport/sports that are being played. Online Database: This feature to the product is regarded as optional at this time. The online database will be a way for spectators to get up-to-date scores for the games that are being hosted. The mobile application and laptop computer; seeing as both have an ability to connect to the web, will upload the score to the online database which can be accessed by the smartphones present in the world. This will enable grandparent that are unable to attend the game to view the scores, as well as parent that have multiple

7 children playing multiple sports at the same time. The functionality would be for the laptop or tablet to connect to a sever, post the score of the game that it is keeping track of, and continually refresh that every few minutes or so. After mobile devices such as smartphones or other computers will be able to ping this database and pull the scores of the games that are going on. Functional Requirements: As with all projects, the functions of this board are specifically set out with enough leeway for some intellectual addition to the project to make it more unique and desirable from a group of different markets. The function requirements for this project have been listed below: Wireless connection between the scoreboard controller and the scoreboard itself. o As of right now this wireless connection is going to be done with Bluetooth, a radio frequency (RF) protocol that is present in laptops, tablets, and smartphones already. Low power consumption o An additional requirement for this project is to make it stand alone if necessary; this would mean we need to have a board that is strong enough to be seen from across the room but at the same time have a battery life for more than the duration of the game Clock accuracy within one half of a second o Keeping the scoreboard up to date is vital for understanding the progress of the game from a referee stand point and a player stand point; by keeping the clock accurate up to half of a second will allow everyone in the building to understand what is currently going on with the game. Multi-Sport Support o The scoreboard and app shall be compatible with multiple sports. Each sport shall have a set of predefined default values for the scoreboard to display at the start of a new game. Mobile App Score Keeper o The physical scoreboard will be programmed by a mobile device. The app layout will be visually similar to the physical board and each component of the physical board shall have an intuitive touch control. o The app will be aware of the sport being played and provide the user with sport specific controls. For example, when the user is controls a basketball game the app will provide the user with buttons to increment the score by -1, +1, +2, and +3. Whereas when controlling a volleyball game the app will only show a -1, and +1 button. Mobile App Score Viewer o The user shall be able to select viewer on the app and see a replica of the physical board. o The viewer app is exempt from the Clock accuracy within one tenth of a second functional requirement. Instead the user will be able to customize a preferred update rate.

8 Non-Functional Requirements: Non-functional requirements are just as import to a successful product as the functional requirements because if the product is not simple to use or understand, people will not purchase the product. To ensure that both the functional and non-function requirements are being met, the non-functional requirements have been listed below: Cost effective with the cost of the board itself being about $300 o Keeping the board low-cost is the driving factor behind the need for this device meaning that this is a very important requirement for the product. Without keeping the product cheap there is no demand for the product. Simple to Use/User Friendly (GUI and Hardware) o Making sure that the User Interface is simple enough to use is crucial for the demand of this product. If teaching a customer how to use the product is required, the customer will go with a more user friendly option Portable design o Keeping the design light and easy to move is a necessary part of the design. Making sure the board can be transferred from one location to another is an essential selling point Easily readable in outdoor conditions o One of the hardest things about using a scoreboard outside is the ability to read what it says. By making the scoreboard readable in outdoor conditions, it would have a higher demand for all day tournament events. Durability o The board is designed to be portable so it needs to withstand man-handling. The board is also designed to be used for high-impact sports, such as basketball and volleyball, so the scoreboard needs to be durable enough to withstand occasional impacts from balls and players. In addition scoreboard needs to be waterproof since it will be used outdoors. Deliverables: As a design team that is producing a product, it is important to know what is going to be delivered at the end of the project. The items that we are going to be delivering to the client are listed below:: Functioning Multi-Sport Scoreboard: An integrated circuit that uses amicrocontroller to update the display based input from the either the remote or app Android and ios mobile application: Downloadable applications for smart phones and tablets that allow the user to pair with the scoreboard and update it accordingly. The app also allows for user to view scores from games being kept on the system. Bluetooth connective remote control: A failsafe for controlling the board that has less functionality than the apps.

9 Database configuration: Holds the scores that are being kept, indexed by the participants and sport. Product User Manual: A detailed description of how to setup and use the scoreboard.
