5 Getting Started Make sure your Nintendo DS system is turned off. Insert the Challenge Me: Word Puzzles Game Card into the Game Card slot on the back of the Nintendo DS system and push until it clicks into place. Turn the power on. The Health and Safety Screen, shown to the right, will appear. Once you have read it, touch the Touch Screen. When using a Nintendo DSiTM/Nintendo DSiTM XL system, simply touch the Challenge Me: Word Puzzles icon to start the game. When using a Nintendo DS/DS Lite system, touch the Challenge Me: Word Puzzles panel to start the game. If the Nintendo DS/DS Lite system s Start-up Mode is set to AUTO MODE, this step will not be necessary. For details, refer to the Instruction Booklet for your Nintendo DS/DS Lite system. NOTE: Nintendo DS system is a catch-all term which is used to refer to the original Nintendo DS, the Nintendo DS Lite, Nintendo DSi and Nintendo DSi XL systems. General Control Instructions All options and controls in this Challenge Me game are made by touching them with your Nintendo DS stylus. Challenge Me: Word Puzzles is also designed to work entirely with the control buttons. In general use the direction buttons to navigate the selections available either up and down or left and right. When you want to confirm a selection press the A Button. On the in game screens, the buttons appear at the bottom. You may select these by pressing the L or R Button depending upon which side of the screen the button appears. 6 Game Modes In the main menu you get to choose between three different modes of play; Quick Game Use this mode to dip in and practice the various different games. In this type of play you are offered differing difficulty levels. In this mode your scores and achievements are not recorded. Challenge Game In this mode your progress is carefully monitored. All your scores will be recorded to a personalised profile slot. There are four slots to choose from so you can store the results for you and three other friends or family members. In Challenge game, you will only be able to play on the expert level of each mini game. Progress A progress display is calculated by reviewing how well you have played each game. This is shown as a value between 0-100% and the results can be viewed at any time by selecting the view profile screen. DS Download Play In this mode of the game it is possible to share the games with another player who does not have a copy of the game. By using download play it means that two players in close enough proximity will be able to play in a similar way to the quick game. Remember, that the scores and progress are not saved when playing this way. To play DS Download play, the player who has a copy of the game should select the DS Download Play option from the main menu and follow the onscreen prompts. 7 DS Wireless Communications (Single-Card Play) Here is an explanation of how to play using Single-Card Play. The Things You ll Need Nintendo DS/DS Lite system.... One for each player Challenge Me: Word Puzzles Game Card One Connection Procedures Host System: 1. Make sure that the power is turned off on all systems, and insert the Game Card into the system. 2. Turn the power on. The Menu Screen of the Nintendo DS system will be displayed. NOTE: In case you are using a Nintendo DS/DS Lite system which is set to AUTO MODE, skip the next step and go on with step Touch the Challenge Me: Word Puzzles panel or icon. 4. Now, follow the instructions on page 6. Client System: 1. Turn the power on. The Menu Screen of the Nintendo DS system will be displayed. NOTE: When using a Nintendo DS/DS Lite system, make sure the Start-up Mode of your system is set to MANUAL MODE. For further details on how to set up the Start-up Mode, please refer to the Instruction Booklet of your Nintendo DS/DS Lite system. 2. Touch DS DOWNLOAD PLAY. The Game List Screen will appear. 3. Touch the Challenge Me: Brain Puzzles 2 panel or icon. 4. You will be asked to confirm your choice. Touch YES to download game information from the Host System. 5. Now, follow the instructions on page 6. Guidelines for Communications For best results when using DS Wireless Communications, follow these guidelines. 8 The DS wireless icon indicates that the associated choice will activate DS Wireless Communications. DO NOT use DS Wireless Communications in prohibited areas (such as in hospitals, on aeroplanes etc.). For further information regarding the usage of DS Wireless Communications, please refer to the separate Health and Safety Precautions Booklet included with your Nintendo DS system. Within 10 metres The icon, which is displayed during DS Wireless Communications, is an indicator of the current wireless signal strength. There are four levels of signal strength. A stronger signal reception will provide smoother wireless communications play. When DS Wireless Communications are in progress, the power indicator LED of your Nintendo DS/DS Lite system or the wireless indicator LED of your Nintendo DSi/Nintendo DSi XL system will blink rapidly. 0 Weak Strong For best results, follow these guidelines: Begin with the distance between systems at about 10 metres (approx. 33 feet) or less and move closer or farther apart as desired, keeping the signal strength at two or more bars for best results. Ensure that the maximum distance between systems is at about 20 metres (approx. 66 feet) or less. The systems should face each other as directly as possible. Avoid having people or other obstructions between the systems. Avoid interference from other devices. If communications seem to be affected by other devices (wireless LAN, microwave ovens, cordless devices, computers), move to another location or turn off the interfering device. 9 A Brief Description of the Games Link You are presented with a grid of mixed up letters. You may use your stylus or control buttons to select adjacent letters one at a time to spell out words that are contained in the internal dictionary that are more than 3 letters long. An adjacent letter is considered to be one above, below to the left or the right. Essentially it has to touch the first letter. Touch each letter in time to create the word. Touch the Enter Button to submit it as a complete word or alternatively touch the last letter twice to do the same. Touch the Shuffle Button at any time you feel there are no combinations that will spell a word. Button controls are made using the direction buttons and the A Button to select. Press the L Button to shuffle and the R Button to enter a word. Soup You are presented with a grid of mixed up letters. You may use your stylus or control buttons to select adjacent letters one at a time to spell out words that are contained in the internal dictionary that are more than 3 letters long. Touch each letter in time to create the word. Touch the Enter Button to submit it as a complete word or alternatively touch the last letter twice to do the same. As each word is correctly identified, the letters are removed from the grid. However, if a word of three letters length is entered correctly then one new letter will be introduced to the grid. With a word of four letters entered correctly two new letters will be added. Five letter words will have three letters added and so on. Touch the Shuffle Button at any time you feel there are no combinations that will spell a word. 10 Button controls are made using the direction buttons and the A Button to select. Press the L Button to shuffle and the R Button to enter a word. SafeWord You are presented with a ring of mixed up letters in the shape of a combination lock that would appear on a safe. You may use your stylus or control buttons to select adjacent letters one at a time to spell out words that are contained in the internal dictionary that are more than 3 letters long. Touch each letter in time to create the word. Touch the Enter Button to submit it as a complete word or alternatively touch the last letter twice to do the same. With this game you can move the combinations of the letters, by touching the letters and dragging the stylus across the screen to rotate each ring of letters. By doing this carefully you should be able to reveal new combinations of words. Touch the Shuffle Button at any time you feel there are no combinations that will spell a word. Button controls are made using the direction buttons and the A Button to select. Press the X Button to shuffle and the Y Button to rotate the rings to the left or the right. Press the L Button to shuffle and the R Button to enter a word. Anagrams In this game a six letter word is plucked at random from the dictionary. It is then jumbled up and displayed on the bottom screen. The game then attempts to work out every three, four, five and six letter word that can be built up from the jumbled collection. It is your task to work them out. Touch each letter on the bottom row in order to spell them out correctly on the top row. Touch the Enter Button to submit the word. If you wish to remove a letter from the top row then simply touch it and it will be placed back in the bottom row. Button controls are made using the direction buttons and the A Button to select. 11 Search This is a classic word search puzzle. You are presented with a grid of apparently jumbled letters on the bottom screen and a list of words that have been hidden on the top screen. Each word can be spelled vertically, horizontally or diagonally either forwards or backwards. To select a word, touch the first letter and then while holding the stylus against the screen drag a selection across the grid. Release the stylus from the screen to confirm its selection. If the word found is in the list on the top screen then it will be struck out and a score is made. Button controls are made using the direction buttons to move a cursor. Press the A Button to select the start and then locate the end of the word and press the A Button again. If the word selected is vertically, horizontally or diagonally true as well as in the list then it will be struck out and a score is added. Conundrum You will be asked to select letters one at a time. Choose between a vowel or a consonant by touching the appropriate button. When you have selected all the letters, it is your task to attempt to find the biggest word that you can find. Touch each letter on the bottom row in order to spell them out correctly on the top row. Touch the Enter Button to submit the word. If you wish to remove a letter from the top row then simply touch it and it will be placed back in the bottom row. You can shuffle the letters to give you a fresh take on the letters selected by touching the Shuffle Button. When you have the best word you can press the Enter Button. At this stage you will be given a chance to try again. Alternatively touch the final answer to confirm your action. The word will then be compared with the words in the dictionary to see if it is a good answer. Button controls are made using the direction buttons and the A Button to select. 12 Squares This can be seen as similar to Sudoku, with fewer constraints. You must fill the grid with letters (A to D, F, or G, depending on the difficulty level chosen) without repeating any of the letters within each column and row. Touch the blue arrows to move about the grid. When you are at a grid cell, a number of brown blocks will appear at the top of the cell. These are pencil marks, and can be used to record possible answers for the current cell. Touch a pencil mark to mark it; touch again to unmark it. To record an answer for the current cell, simply write your answer in the yellow square in the centre of the screen. The cell will flip, and show your chosen answer. If you wish to change an answer, select the appropriate cell and touch the Erase Button along the bottom of the screen. You cannot erase answers that were given at the start of the game; these are coloured black. Once you have entered an answer, you can get a hint at any time by touching the Hint Button at the bottom of the screen. If any of your answers are incorrect, one of the incorrect answers will be randomly selected and highlighted in red on the top screen. If none of your answers are incorrect, nothing will be highlighted. Button controls can also be used for these actions. Use the d-pad to move your selection around the grid. When a cell is selected, pressing the A Button will present you with a number of blocks similar in appearance to pencil marks. Use the d-pad to choose the appropriate answer, then press the A Button again to select. Alternatively, you can touch the appropriate answer with the stylus. You can dismiss the answer blocks with the B Button. When the pencil marks are displayed, you can press the X Button to begin selecting pencil marks, signified by the number on the middle block turning white. Use the d-pad to choose a pencil mark, then press the A Button to select. To deselect a pencil mark, select the one you wish to deselect, then press the A Button. To stop selecting pencil marks, press the B Button. To erase the currently selected cell, press the L Button or the Y Button.
