2 ntroduction For this assignment you must develop a Wordsearch game. This is a single player game. Wordsearches are played using a 2-dimensional grid. The size of Wordsearch grids can vary, but for this assessment we will use a standard grid size of 20 rows and 20 columns, and a list of 8 words. Wordsearch is a word puzzle game that involves searching a grid of letters to find all the words listed. These words are hidden inside the Wordsearch grid as they are surrounded by other random letters. The words can be placed horizontally, vertically or diagonally. They may also be placed so as to be read forwards or backwards, meaning there are 8 different directions in which each word could be placed. The list of hidden words should be provided for the player. nce a word is identified by the player, they will click a Check Word button. f they have found one of the words, that word should be removed from the word list, or some other indication made that the word has been found (e.g. scored through, greyed out, etc.). nce all the words have been successfully found, a Game Complete message should be displayed. Most Wordsearch games have a theme to the list of words, e.g. animals, holiday destinations, sports, etc. The word list should be stored in a file and read in at the start of the game. ere is an example word list for a Wordsearch puzzle: DG, CT, MKY, S, GT, BBT, DP, ZB These words must be placed on the Word grid so that they fit on the grid and are in one of the 8 specified directions. The following examples of word placement show only part of the grid. DG, placed on the grid horizontally, read from left to right: D G CT, placed on the grid horizontally, read from right to left T C MKY, placed on the grid vertically, read from top to bottom M K Y Designing nd Developing bject-riented Computer Programs March 2014 Final CC ducation 2014

3 S, placed on the grid vertically, read from bottom to top S GT, placed on the grid diagonally, read from top left to bottom right G T BBT, placed on the grid diagonally, read from bottom right to top left T B B DP, placed on the grid diagonally, read from bottom left to top right D P Designing nd Developing bject-riented Computer Programs March 2014 Final CC ducation 2014

4 ZB, placed on the grid diagonally, read from top right to bottom left B Z n example starting Wordsearch grid containing these eight words, before random letters are added: Z B G P T Y D K G D M T S C T B B s can be seen from the starting positions, it is not necessary to have one word in each of the possible directions. ach word should have possible positions and directions calculated, and one position and direction chosen at random that fits into the grid. The words in the Wordsearch grid may also overlap, as can be seen with ZB and GT, and with S and DG. This is not essential, but is a suitable configuration if generated. This means that when looking to place words on the grid the application does not just check empty squares, but also checks if squares already containing letters contain the required letter for the word to be placed, at the appropriate location in the word. Designing nd Developing bject-riented Computer Programs March 2014 Final CC ducation 2014

5 nce all the words have been placed on the grid, the empty squares are filled using randomly generated letters: B Z T U D Q X C D S T C C T T Z B C D F G V V S T W T T D V S U G P T S X Y F D P B D T T F G V W B Y B D S F P U C S S J M S D P Y P Q B Q T S F D F F G M T D S X D S B K B T F M W Y K D Y M G T K Z Q P T W Y U X T D B K K U U F F P Z S Y V W U P S X M W B C J F U J G D G S T G D U P U P M F B T S J W T S Z C P D F S Q D C W F U J C F S S T B B Y G P S C B Z U C C J C D Z B Z D Y Q B J W D U G F G Y This makes it very hard to find the words, which is the challenge. Most Wordsearch games will not use a completely random placement of letters. They will place vowels much more frequently than consonants, and will try to put in a few partial words (e.g. G followed by random letters) to confuse the player seeking the actual words. For this assessment you are not required to weight the distribution of random letters, though you can if desired. The game ends when all the words have been found, and a Game Complete message should be displayed. Task You must: develop the program Document your class design in UM Test the program using an appropriate testing regime. The Wikipedia page has more details on how Wordsearches work. ote that the original game is a paper-based game. lso, note that you are only required to implement the features discussed in the assignment brief. 6 Your application should be presented as a 20 by 20 grid of buttons, each representing a letter. To one side of this should be the list of words to search for. Underneath it should be buttons for checking a word selection, and for clearing the current selection. ach round, the player should press buttons on the grid to select what they think is one of the words on the list. Buttons in the grid should be disabled once pressed. The player must then press the Check Word button. nce this is pressed, the program must check whether they have found a valid word or not. f the word is valid then the buttons remain disabled, the word is marked as found, and is either removed from the word list or the fact it has been found is indicated by some other visual method (e.g. strike through or change of font colour). f the word selected is not one on the list, then the buttons selected that turn are re-set to enabled, and no words are removed or altered on the list. The player should also be able to press a Clear Selection button to reset their current selection to enabled if they realise their selection is incorrect. n addition to the Clear Selection option, the program must also keep track of how many buttons have been pressed in the current round and if this is a number that is greater than the length of the longest word remaining to be found, the buttons should be re-set and a message displayed to inform the player that their selection was incorrect. Pressing this button should re-set the buttons selected since the last Check Word button press, but leave the buttons of already found words as disabled. nce all the words have been found, the program must display a Game ver message, and disable all buttons. Your program will need to perform the following operations: Set up the graphical user interface ead in a word list from file epresent words as objects Provide a way to link letters to buttons Place each word from the word list into the grid in a random but valid configuration. Starting coordinates and directions for words should be generated randomly, but the program will need to check that the words can be placed in those directions and locations without going outside the bounds of the grid or overwriting a previously placed word. While a grid configuration generated results in such an error, the method should be re-called until a suitable starting grid is found. Fill the remaining grid cells with random letters. Disable buttons on the grid after they have been pressed, until the Check Word button is pressed, or until the Clear Selection button is pressed, or until the player presses too many buttons in one turn (e.g. if the longest word remaining on the word list that has not been found is 6 letters long, then the buttons should be re-set when the player presses a 7 th button on the grid in one turn). Check whether the selected letters form a word on the word list or not, and update the board and word list appropriately. Keep track of how many words on the word list have been found. Display a Game ver message once all words in the word list have been successfully found in the Wordsearch grid by the player. 7 s part of the deliverables for this module, you should write up a full testing plan for the system, and create a report that describes why you chose the testing data you did and what testing categories you are stressing in your regime. You should include in your report a full log of how you implemented the testing, and note what regression testing you needed to do as a result of fixes you made to the program. Your testing plan and the implementation of that plan should incorporate both unit testing and integration testing, as well as white box testing and black box testing. You will be assessed on the following: The application you produce (50 marks) Testing data (25 marks) Class diagrams provided (25 marks) Warning: ll media must be virus free! Media containing viruses, or media which cannot be run directly, will result in a F grade being awarded for this module. You must read and understand CC ducation s policy on cademic Dishonesty and Plagiarism. You must complete the Statement and Confirmation of wn Work form and attach the completed form to your assignment.
