9 Concept Artist Equipment (Unit 4 PO1) 334 words As an entry level concept artist, a certain degree of equipment, hardware and software is required. However, these things are not cheap, there are thousands of different brands for computer parts making it an almost impossible decision, especially as all parts have different specs and stats making them better for certain jobs. So what parts do you need for creating concept art? Creating concept art isn't very tasking on a newer computer however, a new machine can cost from a range of five hundred pounds to thousands of pounds. Furthermore, depending on the retailer you purchase a machine from you may not be getting a good deal. Retailers like PC World or The Apple Store charge extra for a pre-built machine, installed software, malware protection or software. My advice is to build your own computer and buy parts you specifically need. In my opinion, as most concept art programs aren't tasking, you will need at least an i5 quad core processor with a high clock speed of around 3.10GHz costing around 150. But what does that mean? For those who aren't into PC specs all these new terms can melt your brain but it's very simple. A clock speed is simply the number of tasks a processor can complete in a given time. Secondly, you will need to buy a new motherboard (cheap if possible) but it needs to support a new GPU and RAM. You will need to buy a GPU for your PC again in my opinion you will get away with an older product like at GTX 960 or even a GTX 770. However, its best if the card has high V Ram which will be stated on the box. I would say that 3gb to 4gb is suitable and will cost around 230 on amazon. Lastly you will need to look at RAM or random-access memory which effects the number of programs running at once or Tabs as they are referred to I recommend 8gb to 16gb of hyperx or Corsair Ram costing 60 to 120. Lastly, looking at software its best to buy a cheap plan monthly for programs like photoshop and fireworks. (This can range from 10 to 70 a month).

10 253 Words The Role of a Concept Artist (Unit 4 PO1) A concept artist either freelance or studio create visual images, designs and drawings for use in different media such as, gaming, illustration and advertisement. These can be assets, modular packs, textures and maps along with just basic drawings. Inturn, by doing this a concept artist can create game characters, vehicles and buildings. Furthermore, a concept artist must have knowledge and understanding of certain softwares like 3DS Max or perhaps other software like Unity, Photoshop and GIMP. Concept artists can work in either 2D or 3D however, most companies now prefer them to complete a 3D design. Concept artists can work freelance or as a studio worker, a freelance artist means that they are recruited by a company (such as Microsoft, Ubisoft, Rockstar and others like 2K) for a contracted time with a monthly salary. As a result of this it can often be difficult for them to find work as they are constantly moving. On the hand, a studio worker has a more secure job a can make around 19,000 to 21,000 as a experienced artist whereas, a more experienced artist can make upwards of 27,000 to 32,000 depending on the company. Then again, arguably a more experienced freelancer can earn more as they can charge what they want.concept artists also. have to be willing to learn new software in order to get a job at a company. If the software they know becomes outdated they become undesirable and are less likely to be employed. Concept artists also have to create a portfolio.

11 The Purpose of Concept Art (Unit 4 PO1) Concept art is a communication tool used by artists to express their ideas, Drawings and Depictions. In this particular case the artist (Waqas Malik) has created a ominous and futuristic robot factory. He has done this through the use of somber colours such as, deep greys and metallic blacks. However, he has also used harsh bright yellows to bring the picture to life. His factory gives a feel of uncertainty as the reason for creation of these robots is unknown. 12 The Purpose of Concept Art (Unit 4 PO1) This piece of concept art is a polar opposite to the Robot Factory by Waqas Malik. The piece is set in a thick forest and is composed of deep autumn colours. Such as, dark oranges, heavy browns and reds ranging from light to dark along with a vibrant turquoise giving depth to the artwork. Overall, the piece has a feeling of tranquility and calm. However, there s a sense of uncertainty. The unexplained boulders and rocks that litter the scene make it feel alien and therefore, brings a tone of the unknown. 13 The Purpose of Concept Art (Unit 4 PO1) This Piece of Concept art is dystopian, unclear and desolate environment. The use of bland colours such as pastel blues, deep greens and light greys blends the image together and makes it impossible to differentiate the start from the end. By doing this the image seems lost and broken reinforcing the idea of a dystopian environment. The overall feel of the image is confusion, nothing is clear about the scene or its inhabitants. 14 Concept Art and Their Target Audiences (Unit 4 PO1) Borderlands 2 has a wide demographic of people for their target audience due to their game style. The game itself is either single player or co-op up to 4 people. Therefore, the game is tailored for two kinds of gamers singleplayer and multiplayer. Secondly, the game is a story driven which is incredibly popular in the older gaming community of both genders as most older game revolved around a good story. Yet is also a action packed first person shooter which is popular for younger people of either gender. This caters to multiple kinds of people either being old or young, female or male, religious or not. Even those who enjoy a trigger happy, bullet heaven action game or those who enjoy a game with great character development and a fulfilling and gripping tale. The concept art itself is bright and cartoon like with cell shaded graphics making it like a comic book which is popular with young people. The unrealistic character design of over proportioned bodies makes the character seem foreboding and unwelcoming which further reinforces the idea of a young adult target audience. The shotguns that the character is holding are also oversized which again shows violence and caters to younger people. Lastly, the game is very gory which means it is targeted at young adults predominantly males.

15 Concept Art and Their Target Audiences (Unit 4 PO1) BioShock concept art is dark and somber and has a foreboding feel to it. In the concept art picture I chose there's a humongous creature in an aggressive fighting stance with oversized proportions and a massive drill as a arm. Due to this monster I believe the games demographic is generally aimed at young adult males. Furthermore, the concept art has a horror game feel with the looming fog and tight corridors, not mention the creepy little girl that is being guarded by the creature. The girl is holding a large needle of some description which fits nicely into the horror genre due to this I further think the games demographic is for young adult males of any religion or faith.

16 How Can a Target Audience Change With Concept Art Styles? There are hundreds of different art styles for video games but how does that change the demographic and target audiences? Different audiences are drawn to certain types of games this can be from the gameplay itself or the artstyle but can changing the art style entice a new or different audience. For Example the franchise Call of Juarez was a fairly popular xbox 360 FPS game which featured a realistic art style. However, the game designers switched over to a cel shaded art style with a more loose arcade feel which greatly increased their demographic.

17 How Can a Art Style Change The Demographic? The art style of a video game can have a huge impact on its genre and target audience. For example, vivid bold colours appeal to a younger audience and a darker more realistic style appeals to a older audience. But, how can you change the art style to appeal to more than one audiences? Looking at games for the younger generation such as, Super Mario Bros or Pokemon the art style is cartoony and bright to appeal this to an older audience they could have a art style like Team Fortress 2 or Overwatch witch remains simplistic bold and colourful for the younger generation but becomes more stylised and realistic which is more appealing to a older audience.

18 Concept Art and Publisher Constraints (Unit 4 PO1) RockStar - Rockstar Games was established December 1998, in New York City. Since that RockStar have created many huge franchise series. Like their most famous release Grand Theft Auto and others such as, Red Dead Redemption or The Max Payne Series. Their have a young adult demographic and aim their games too males, as they are mainly shooters and action games. RockStar have to sign NDAs they are legally binding agreements which, if broken, can lead to legal action against employee or studio and termination of work contract meaning if a employee leaks information on a current game project they can be sued or fired. RockStar is often targeted by the media as they create extremely violent games. However, the games are still rated 18 and are class as R rated. But, younger people still buy the game creating issues for the company. If RockStar were to change the game play or Story in their games the fan base would be in uproar as their main selling point is their fun shoot em up storyline and characters.

19 Concept Art Styles (Unit 4 PO1) Minimalist: Minimalist art styles can create beautiful simplistic landscapes and characters through bold heavy lines in the foreground and soft faded curves in the backdrop. By doing this the game can utilize soft ambient lighting to create depth or distance this can be seen in games like Alto's adventure or others such as, monument valley. Personally, I feel minimal art styles feel like a child's storybook, which in turn, makes the game feel soft and flowing. The game Alto s Adventure is a simple side scrolling platformer which could be easily forgotten if it weren't for the art style. Due to the minimalist style the game stands out from the rest and is both a challenge to play but calming to look at.

20 Concept Art Styles (Unit 4 PO1) Cel Shading: Cel shading is another beautiful art style that I enjoy. The art style looks messy and unclear which is perfect for action packed shooter games like the Borderlands and Call of Juarez franchises. Secondly, the art style feels Comic book like and therefore, appeals to lots of gamers who look classic hero stories in graphic novels. The connection between the comic book like art style and the player makes them feel like a hero or villain like in their favourite stories. The art style is both simple and yet complex. A mix match of cross hatching and scribbles creates chaos. However, the thick bold lines that surround each object, character or building is very simplistic and cartoon like.

21 Concept Art Styles (Unit 4 PO1) cartoon: The cartoon style is generally used in 2D or isometric games which utilize sprites such as, Don't Starve for example. The art style can vary with the colour schemes. Don't Starve looks like a gritty, somber horror- survival due to the dark bland colours and scribble effect on the monsters. On the other hand, Yoshi's Island uses the same technique but due to the colour scheme feels light and happy with bright primary colours.
