These are technically proofs of record, variously called record proofs and VIP proofs. The Act of Union of 1800 included a provision that instructed the Royal Mint to prepare and preserve examples of the kingdom s coinage in each year so as to keep an historical record of the coinage using actual examples, not just accounts. This was an innovation. Specimen proofs of almost all coinage issues exist from that date on. When the first sovereigns of the modern era appeared in 1817 bearing the Wyon portrait of the aging monarch combined with Pistrucci s now-classic image of Saint George (replacing Saint Michael of medieval lore) depicted slaying the dragon (symbol of evil), the coin was instantly admired and continued to be struck into 1820 after the king had died. Proofs of 1817 are most often seen among the specimen coinage, followed by the considerably rarer It is believed that a single 1819 proof may exist but the coin so described in a 1950 Spink reference has not been seen in many decades. As George III passed away on 29 January 1820, proofs bearing this date seem to have been not much more than an afterthought. The 1820 proof half-sovereign (WR.207) is so rare that the Wilson-Rasmussen reference did not show its image; one appeared in the Terner Collection. The proof 1820 sovereign, as seen in this lot, is equally rare with an estimate of perhaps two examples extant. Its technical grade is of little matter as it is lacking in almost every collection in the world. One lucky buyer will be able to boast of ownership of one of the great sovereign rarities. St. George and the dragon (S.3800; Marsh 7, [R3 in any condition]), a marvellous example, lustrous with choice surfaces, certified and graded by PCGS as Mint State ,000-12,000 Certainly the finest known of this very rare date, and the only example graded MS63+ by PCGS Superior to the Bentley specimen, which fetched 18,000. This is a special coin. Retaining so much lustre, as a rarity seldom seen in any condition approaching that of the presently offered coin, it is indeed a special example of the rarest date sovereign of this design type. In all, some 21 million sovereigns of the Laureate Head style were coined between 1821 and 1825, but only during 1823 did the mintage fall below one million (616,770 struck in 1823). After only five years, this regal style ended, being replaced at the king s own command by the Bare Head portrait issue. It s a familiar story that, during 1823, in the middle of this style s short existence, a new portrait showing George IV without the laurel wreath and more thin-faced was first prepared as a medallion by Sir Francis Chantrey. The obverse die for the sovereign was engraved by J.B. Merlen, as the senior engraver Pistrucci famously refused to simply copy the work of another artist. The king approved of it without delay, and in midyear 1825 the new portrait began to appear. George IV was a luxurious man who had admired a large bust of himself in this style, showing him to be slimmer in demeanour than the Laureate portrait suggested; but he was not slim at all, and in fact the first style of portrait, as seen on this sovereign, is the more lifelike. There seems to be no specific reason for this date s rarity. Economic activity in 1823 was not out of the ordinary and in reality, it was a period of economic plenty, and this would account for the issuance of a then-novel 2 gold coin, struck only during 1823 for commerce, the same time as this sovereign was minted. Half-sovereigns of 1823 were accordingly also struck in smaller numbers compared to other dates in this series. It is a logical assumption, then, that the 2 coin was seen, at the time, as fulfilling the requirement for gold used in commercial transactions, although clearly the larger coin was deemed unnecessary in subsequent years, as no others were made for commercial purposes until the Jubilee issue of We must ultimately conclude that sovereigns of 1823 saw continual use, wore down over the years, and that the majority of remaining pieces were part of the 90 million sovereigns melted into bars by the Bank of England during 1930 and SOVEREIGNS

9 21 George IV, sovereign, 1828, bare head l., rev. crowned shield of arms (S.3801), so rare a date that it is missing in almost all collections of sovereigns, even those worked on for many years, this piece showing obvious wear from commercial circulation, which to some may add to its appeal (see comments to follow), certified and graded by PCGS as About Uncirculated 50, the key date in the reign 12,500-15,000 The 1828 sovereign has long been recognized as a rarity in all conditions. Marsh states that during the calendar year of 1828 most sovereigns struck by the Royal Mint bore the date 1827, and that the new obverse die bearing the date 1828 was not used until December of that year. This accounts for the small mintage of 386,182 sovereigns of this date, compared to other dates in this series having mintages ranging from about 2.2 million to more than 5.7 million. Reflecting his experience, Marsh assigned an R4 rating to this date (15 to 25 specimens known). While the overall population may be towards the high end of his estimate, the date appears infrequently enough to call it extremely rare among the gold coins of this king. And, most important of all, better grade examples are truly elusive. In point of fact, most sovereigns minted during the first four decades of the 19 th century are exceptionally difficult to locate in choice, lustrous conditions, and even the seemingly common 1826 bare head sovereign (with a mintage of more than 5.7 million) is not very often available in the best grades. Challis (A New History of the Royal Mint) offers a solid explanation, noting that contemporary accounts often mentioned the preponderance of light coins circulating by the 1840s, meaning that the New Coinage was wearing quickly in commerce and that light, or worn, gold coins in particular represented a loss versus face value to owners. The Treasury decided to do something about the situation, Challis says (page 484), and it steadily withdrew more than fourteen million pounds worth of light gold between July 1842 and March 1845, roughly one-third of the total gold circulation. All these earlier dated coins, sovereigns and their halves ( and this exercise probably removed most of the remaining guineas ), were melted by the Royal Mint, which then replaced them with new coins. This explains the relative rarity of all of these coins today, and if an 1826 sovereign is a scarce coin then consider the magnitude of rarity of the 1828 sovereign, and in particular the exceptional coin in this lot George IV, sovereign, 1829, bare head l., rev. crowned shield of arms (S.3801), about extremely fine George IV, sovereign, 1830, bare head l., rev. crowned shield of arms (S.3801), certified and graded by PCGS as Mint State Only four other examples graded MS62 by PCGS. 10 24 William IV, pattern sovereign, 1830, plain edge, second portrait, bare head r., rev. crowned shield of arms (S.3829B; W&R.260 [R5, 6-10 known]; Nobleman 203; DM.178), evidence of some handling, bold proof impression, beautifully mirrored fields surrounding frosted images of the king and his royal shield, certified and graded by PCGS as Proof 62 Deep Cameo, only one other example graded PF62DC by PCGS 10,000-12,500 Victoria s uncle reigned just short of a decade, having spent most of his adult life in the Royal Navy, where he was influential in its modernisation and as a result of which he was sometimes called the sailor king by admirers, who were relatively few as he was not an outgoing person; he seemed lacking in many kingly qualities, doubtless as a result of his experience at sea and in the Admiralty until his older brother, George IV, left the crown to him. The kingdom itself enjoyed prosperity during these years, which marked the end of the Romantic Age in the arts. Politically and militarily this was the beginning of the modern empire; it would be Victoria who led the nation into a new period of military might, but it was her Uncle William who prepared the way by advancing the naval forces. William s coinage included tiny silver and bronze coins made purposely for use in far-flung reaches of the empire, where few of his subjects would encounter his gold sovereigns and none would ever have set eyes on a coin like this, a deluxe proof specially made to show off the coin s qualities to best advantage, and an image of the king as custodian of the realm. Commercial sovereigns of this reign are invariably entirely different from this coin, as their lustre is satiny, whereas here we see the king s image set off by watery mirrored fields. J. B. Merlen s elegant royal shield on reverse also captivates the viewer s eye. Regal is a fitting description of this very rare golden treasure. 25 William IV, sovereign, 1831, first portrait, bare head r., rev. crowned shield of arms (S.3829; Marsh 16 [R2]), highly lustrous and sharply struck with normal light abrasions, mostly in the fields, certified and graded by NGC as About Uncirculated This appealing example ranks with the better pieces to come to market in recent years and is easily distinguished from later, more commonly seen dates by the style and fullness of the curls in front of the king s ear, as well as his nose pointing to the second N rather than the I in the title. It is a distinctive portrait that is rarely seen. This is a high-end specimen for the variety. SOVEREIGNS

14 35 Victoria, proof sovereign, 1838, plain edge, young head l., rev. crowned shield of arms within wreath (S.3852; W&R.300 [R4, known]; DM.202), a lovely coin indeed, certified and graded by PCGS as Proof 64 Deep Cameo, exceptionally rare as a proof date, among the finest known and the only example graded PF64DC by PCGS 14,000-16,000 This splendid sovereign, seen normally only in the finest of advanced collections, was the product of one of the most skilled die engravers in history, William Wyon. It is very similar to his patterns of 1837 and 1838 (WR ) but here on this proof we see Victoria more lifelike, with a fuller neck and face, her portrait in fact a bit larger than on any of the patterns (which are also denoted by the presence of a tiny star-like rose on each side of the date). Evidently Wyon was experimenting with the overall appearance, adjusting the size of the image of the queen as well as the placement of the royal titles. The final proof, as seen here, is a stunning testament to the engraver s sense of artistic perfection. SOVEREIGNS

15 36 Victoria, sovereign, 1838, young head l., rev. crowned shield of arms within wreath (S.3852; Marsh 22 [Rare in any condition]), a glorious coin, with a sensational strike for this date and intense lustre, surfaces displaying only tiny ticks in the soft gold, certified and graded by PCGS as Mint State First year of issue for Victoria, rarely seen in any grade, survivors with lustre apparently saved by admirers of the new, young queen and by contemporary collectors. Most of the sizable mintage has disappeared, most likely through meltings of old gold over the decades since this coin was struck. An interesting side note is that the founder of the American Smithsonian Institution gave an 1838 sovereign as the first donation to that museum. This marvellous coin appears to be rather conservatively graded. Don t let the MS64 designation persuade you that this is not one of the very best 1838 sovereigns in existence and it is a prize for any serious collector of sovereigns. 37 Victoria, sovereign, 1838, narrow shield variety, young head l., rev. crowned shield of arms within wreath (S.3852A; Marsh 22A), obvious commercial wear on the queen s portrait most notably, but the fields also show wear and some abrasions, the strike being somewhat soft, certified and graded by PCGS as About Uncirculated 53, only one other example graded AU53 by PCGS, extremely rare ,000 The reason for this reverse die s existence on some sovereigns of 1838 and 1843 remains a mystery, but over recent decades a search has been on worldwide for coins exhibiting this variant of the royal shield, with few coins being located of either date. The 1843 is the more famous but 1838 appears to be rarer. While the mintage for this first year of issue of gold sovereigns for Queen Victoria was sizable at more than 2.7 million pieces, its rarity today is likely explained by Challis (A New History of the Royal Mint, page 484): he states that by 1835 the quantity of light [worn] gold in circulation was worrying enough to be the subject of a Mint report to the Treasury.... Between July 1842 and March 1845 some 14 million in light coin, roughly one-third of the total gold circulation, was withdrawn and replaced. Into that melt, it would seem, poured most of the unknown quantity of narrow shield sovereigns dated SOVEREIGNS

16 38 Victoria, proof sovereign, 1839, plain edge, struck en médaille, young head l., rev. crowned shield of arms within wreath (S.3852; W&R.302 [R4, known]; DM.203), light handling marks but still brilliant, certified and graded by PCGS as Proof 62 Deep Cameo Only two other examples graded PF62DC by PCGS. 39 Victoria, sovereign, 1839, young head l., rev. crowned shield of arms within wreath (S.3852; Marsh 23 [R2 in any condition]), brilliant with lustre and choice for this rare date, the obverse showing light handling or tiny abrasions, the reverse especially pleasing, well struck, certified and graded by PCGS as Mint State With a mintage of 503,695 coins, the 1839 sovereign is patently a scarce date, but its actual elusiveness in Mint State gives pause for thought. Population reports from the grading companies may not be proof in and of themselves, but 1838 appears in that census considerably more often than 1839 and seems to be available in higher grades of Mint State as well. Indeed only one other example has been graded MS62 by PCGS. The explanation must be fairly straightforward: the initial issue of 1838 was novel at the time and must have been saved when new by admirers of Victoria as well as by collectors; the next year, 1839, was then just another year, and was probably of little note or interest at the time. The same might be said of 1841, the next year for sovereigns. No contemporary could know of the small mintages of both years, nor were meltings of and events in which the dates of gold coins were noted or even noticed. This date, 1839, the second year of Victoria s gold, seems to be rarer than references imply, and especially so for coins still retaining mint lustre as seen on this specimen. SOVEREIGNS

17 40 Victoria, sovereign, 1841, unbarred As in GRATIA, young head l., rev. crowned shield of arms within wreath (S.3852; Marsh 24 [R3 in any condition]), an especially choice example of this classic rarity, showing glowing lustre and just faint friction on the portrait and obverse field, sharply struck with a fabulous reverse, certified and graded by PCGS as About Uncirculated 58, one of the finest 1841 sovereigns to appear at auction and very rare in this grade 10,000-15,000 The mintage of gold sovereigns was particularly scant in this year, with a reported issuance of just 124,054 pieces, compared to several million for most of the dates of this first bust type. Examination of the Royal Mint s output of all coins for the first half of the 19 th century (as given on Table 74 in Challis s New History of the Royal Mint) reveals that the totals for 1841 were smaller than normal but not exceedingly so, which leads to the next question: what happened to all the 1841 sovereigns (not to mention half-sovereigns and halfcrowns), making them rarities today? Challis mentions the heavier export of copper and silver beginning in 1835 (page 487), but this had no impact on the gold coinage. Commercial attrition explains the overall scarcity of Queen Victoria s early gold, but what happened in particular to the sovereigns of 1838, 1839 and 1841? The 1838 sovereign s mintage was 2.7 million coins, yet it is very rare today. The 1839 sovereign is rarer still in Mint State, perhaps reflecting its mintage of just over half a million pieces. But 1841 is rare in all grades and almost unknown in Mint State. Challis relates that during the early 1840s the Royal Mint was under special scrutiny by government officials looking into its costs (pages ), and that its records were suspect as being possibly inaccurate due to political squabbling. Yet none of this explains the rarity of the 1838, 1839 and especially 1841 sovereigns. British commerce has always been intense and this clearly supports the idea that these first sovereigns of the new reign were heavily used. But so were all of the other issued dates of the 1840s, 1850s and 1860s. When the Bank of England instructed the Royal Mint to melt down some 90 million sovereigns into gold bars during , as Challis tells us (page 576), it may well be that the older, more worn coins went into the melting pots to such an extent that the bulk of remaining earlier dates thus disappeared forever. 18 Possibly the Finest Known Example of this Famous Rarity 43 Victoria, sovereign, 1843, narrow shield, young head l., rev. crowned shield of arms within wreath (S.3852B; Marsh 26A [R3 in any grade]), a fabulous sovereign displaying full mint brilliance combined with gorgeous gold colour and a marvellous strike, certified and identified erroneously by PCGS as S.3852, graded as Mint State 64, quite possibly the finest known example of this famous rarity and the only example graded MS64 by PCGS 20,000-25,000 The narrow shield style of reverse is most easily distinguished from ordinary reverses by the positioning of the laurel leaves to the sides of the shield (on regular reverses, the second-most top inner leaves are in line with the shield s top but the central leaves are above the shield s central line dividing the quadrants), making the royal shield appear taller and thinner. There is also a set of inner berries at the top of each laurel cluster on the narrow shield. In terms of the engraving quality, it may be said to be more delicate on this rare variety, displaying the armorial emblem under the shield as somewhat larger and longer, creating a more artistic uniting of the thistle, rose and shamrock. Why this die was created, and why it was employed so sparingly only during 1838 and 1843, remain unanswered questions. What is apparent is the astounding quality of this specimen, finer than the Bentley coin and finer than all others seen so far. This exceptional piece was described by Charles Wander as one of his favourite coins in his collection. SOVEREIGNS

Perhaps the quickest way to identify this rare variety is to check where the I in DEI appears over the downward curve of the queen s hair immediately to left of the top bunch of hair in her ponytail: on this variety that letter sets centred, whereas on the second head it sets to the left. This is a very rare coin, in point of fact, that was not recognized for most of the time since it was struck, not even by Marsh in his first editions. While it is called the small head it is only slightly so compared to the following portrait. Evidently the positioning of the queen s portrait was altered in this year in an attempt to prolong die-life (as fully explained in the Bentley sale of 8 May 2012, lot 55 footnote). This famous sovereign rarity takes its name from the man who alloyed the Australian specie sent to the Royal Mint for coinage use, George Frederick Ansell, and authored a technical paper called A Treatise on Coining (first appearing in The Mechanics Magazine, 24 June 1859). The Ansell sovereign is readily distinguished from other 1859 sovereigns by the raised line appearing on the lower portion of the ribbon behind Victoria s ear, and it came to be made for a purely technical reason: the recently established Sydney Mint found itself unable to refine out the natural silver and other metals in its native gold ore (Challis, A New History of the Royal Mint, page 513). Ansell s life story is vague but he seems to have been employed, for his expertise in metals chemistry, by the Royal Mint in its smelting room, where he successfully parted out the trace metals in the ore and deemed the gold received from Australia to be fit for coinage into sovereigns. His work was evidently questioned by the master of the Mint, so he added the now-famous raised line on the ribbon to dies he had prepared to intentionally test results. Initially the gold was deemed brittle because of the impurities it contained when received at the mint. Ansell s sovereigns underwent testing and were found equal to all others in durability, not at all brittle. All of the Australian gold was then coined into sovereigns using his obverse die(s), and these were duly released into commerce. Decades passed before the variety was recognized by the numismatic fraternity, by which time almost all remaining examples showed considerable wear, but in fact few Ansells have ever been discovered. The rest of the mintage disappeared around the world during the century in which sovereigns were freely traded. Never identified as unusual during this period, most of Ansell s sovereigns undoubtedly ended up melted down into gold bars, some to be made into other sovereigns. Most survivors show evidence of some years of commercial use. The two examples in this collection are exceptional among all known survivors. SOVEREIGNS

Until 1954, the existence of this rarity remained unknown to the numismatic community. The number of 827 sovereigns minted is also unknown although it can be deduced, more or less, if the theory is correct that the numerical designation appearing on the queen s bust at the truncation (well hidden from view) is that of a bar of gold made into sovereigns in order to make a reliable count of how many sovereigns are equal to such a gold bar in storage at the Royal Mint or at the Bank of England. Pieces so produced were at the time nothing but an accounting check for the mint, or the bank, and all were seemingly bagged and placed into commercial circulation. The English sovereign was the world s measure of money in 1863, and doubtless many of these 827 coins were shipped abroad, were used hard and were eventually melted. Only a handful have ever come to light, this specimen being typical.
