28 322 al-muqtadir, Ornamental Dirham, no mint undated, 2.94g (unrecorded by Ilisch in Donative Coins). Ex-mount, good very fine and extremely rare This and the previous lot are examples of the very rare personal coinage of the caliph. Both obverse bear identical designs and legends which begin with the caliph s ism, Ja far, and continue with his caliphal title al-muqtadir billah. The central designs on the first coin resembles a flamboyant W and on the second the design is reminiscent of a swastika. The first is known to have been struck in both gold and silver, which is also possibly the case for the second. As these pieces do not carry any mark of denomination it is likely that they were intended as pièces de plaisir which were usually mounted for suspension and displayed (in the harem?) as a mark of caliphal favour. 323 al-muqtadir, Donative Dirham, Madinat al- Salam 302h, 2.86g.
